Default Found a 681 locally...need some advice. ))UPDATE(())UPDATED AGAIN((

Local shop called and he has a 681 that someone traded in. I went and took a look at it, and put a down payment on it. Just curious what you guys think of it and what a good price might be. Also wondering the born on date.

The gun was stored in a holster, and has some pitting. Right now it has rubber grips, but I plan on changing that.

Any and all info on this is appreciated!

Default DEPENDS ON PRICE.

While not NIB it should clean up & be a fine shooter grade, BUT without having it in hand??? Open the cylinder & show the model & dash #. $450 ish??? Depending on inspection.

681 no dash..sorry. Has the M stamp as well. Mechanicals are all fine. Everything is tight, timing is good.

Based on the serial number, which is very low, it likely shipped in....
1981 - 1982.
Product code was 104102. They shipped with Magna service stocks. It's possible it has a LEO history, since many of the early guns went directly to fill orders with service agencies.

One bit of trivia.... the S&W logo is on the right side plate. It was only inscribed there for a short period of time, before it moved to the other side -- where it still resides today 35 years later. It's an easy way to spot an early L-frame at a distance. Because of that, I knew right away it was a no-dash.

It isn't marked as such, but the guy who traded it said he got it from a NYS trooper. Now whether the trooper bought his own or whether it was an issued piece with no markings I'm not sure.

Looks like it was a LEO gun and has been in a leather holster. Owner was not a gun guy or it would be cleaner... I’m thinking $400

In my area $450 would be a good price.

Default 681

I have a 581, serial is AAP, no M. Don't know date, but I'm guessing 1982.

$400 in my neck of the woods in central Virginia.
Being stainless it should clean up nicely.

A little Flitz, a little oil and you will have a nice shooter at a good price.

So I picked up the 681 finally. Brought it home and tore it apart, cleaned it all up and got most of the pitting taken care of .There were a few spots in the corners, the sights and on the cylinder that I didn't want to get too aggressive with as I didn't want to change overall profile or thin anything out too much.It had Pachmayr rubbers on it when I bought it but went with a set of targets I have for now ( no magnas handy ) .Probably change to either a Hogue rubber or hardwood eventually.

At $400 you did well. While not rare, they aren’t seen often which tells me the owners like them.

I would go $350 on that one. Bought a few in the past in that price range that were in better condition.

I wish my local shop would get one in. I really love fixed sight revolvers. I would really love one with 3 inch barrel. Congrats on a nice score.

I saw one listed on the local arms-trader site offered for $450 at a pawn shop. I responded as soon as the alert came through my email, but it had already been sold. I figure you did quite well. Enjoy!

The target stocks look good on it, but they originally shipped with PC Magnas.

Don’t think it was an issued NYSP gun. I’ve seen 681’s stamped NYSP under the crane.

Were the Pachmayr grips issued on some of them or a factory option ? I found and am refinishing a pair of magnas for it but it did come with the Pachs.

Pachís were not standard issue. Most cops I worked with took the factory magna grips off their model 10ís and 64ís immediately and put on Pachmayr grips. They were the only rubber grips authorized because you could read the serial number on the butt through the little window on the Pachmayr grips.

I would suggest that you keep those Pachmayr rubbers. Because I have found that the Gripper Pro that was so popular with Police Officers were preferred for a very good reason. That being that they have a palm swell, circumference, and shape that is a perfect fit for the "average" 5'10" to 6' Male. Quite simply they fit the average Cop's hand just perfectly. They also fit my hand perfectly and as a result it's very easy to shoot well with these grips.

As for the Hogue grips, the 500 Magnum grips are a very close second to the Pachmayr Pro but the standard smaller Hogue rubbers are IMO better suited to a woman's smaller hand.

My wife's Model 681 no dash with "M" was a Tulsa Police Department issued gun. I put Crimson Trace grips on it, and it magically became hers.

I dunno. I prefer the look & feel of the targets.

I like the look of the targets, absolutely hate shooting with them. Puts my middle knuckle middle finger right behind the trigger guard...

Never understood Tyler T's. Don't care for the look of them either.

I wanted a 681 when they were first available. I had to settle for a 581 nickel which was a fine duty carry.
I looked for a long time for a 681 and I found this 681 with original wood service grips and bought it.
I added the BILL DAVIS grips.
As I bought it
