Default Found a 681 locally...need some advice.

Local shop called and he has a 681 that someone traded in. I went and took a look at it, and put a down payment on it. Just curious what you guys think of it and what a good price might be. Also wondering the born on date.

The gun was stored in a holster, and has some pitting. Right now it has rubber grips, but I plan on changing that.

Any and all info on this is appreciated!

Default DEPENDS ON PRICE.

While not NIB it should clean up & be a fine shooter grade, BUT without having it in hand??? Open the cylinder & show the model & dash #. $450 ish??? Depending on inspection.

681 no dash..sorry. Has the M stamp as well. Mechanicals are all fine. Everything is tight, timing is good.

Based on the serial number, which is very low, it likely shipped in....
1981 - 1982.
Product code was 104102. They shipped with Magna service stocks. It's possible it has a LEO history, since many of the early guns went directly to fill orders with service agencies.

One bit of trivia.... the S&W logo is on the right side plate. It was only inscribed there for a short period of time, before it moved to the other side -- where it still resides today 35 years later. It's an easy way to spot an early L-frame at a distance. Because of that, I knew right away it was a no-dash.

It isn't marked as such, but the guy who traded it said he got it from a NYS trooper. Now whether the trooper bought his own or whether it was an issued piece with no markings I'm not sure.

Looks like it was a LEO gun and has been in a leather holster. Owner was not a gun guy or it would be cleaner... I’m thinking $400

In my area $450 would be a good price.

Default 681

I have a 581, serial is AAP, no M. Don't know date, but I'm guessing 1982.

$400 in my neck of the woods in central Virginia.
Being stainless it should clean up nicely.

A little Flitz, a little oil and you will have a nice shooter at a good price.
