Default Need help with 625PC grips....please!!!

Shot my new 625PC this afternoon for the first time. VERY happy with the accuracy but it really beat me up. Fifty rounds and I was DONE. Didn't like the red white and blue grips so took them off and put a set of used finger groove "combat like" (not factory) grips on it. Bad mistake. They don't work for me at all...actually got a couple blood blisters.

Any suggestions??? What works for you??? Want to use it for bullseye/target type shooting. Attached picture of grips and 25 yard target using Federal 230 ball. I've got to tame the beast. Please HELP

Default 625 pc

I have one and had the same issue with the red white blue grips beating up my hands. I switched to a rubber grip made for a S&W Governor from the S&W web store. Worked great can shoot all day. Fit well too. I had mine tuned by T K Custom, made a huge difference. Good luck itís a great revolver.

Best out of the box trigger I've ever seen....AWESOME. Fit and finish....AWESOME. Love it but these grips have to go. I'll look at those Governor grips. Are they like "decelerator" grips?

Try Pachmayr "Diamond Pro" series. I have them on several N frames, including the 610-2. They tame 10mm very well, same goes for the hot 357 loads.

I've become more recoil averse as I've gotten older (smarter?). I use my 625-8PC for IDPA and it is fitted with the Hogue monogrip used on the X-frame guns. It covers the backstrap and has a special insert of softer material where the web of the hand falls.

You used to only be able to get them from S&W, but their agreement with Hogue must have lapsed as now you can buy them directly from Hogue - although colors are no longer available AFAIK.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

OK, I will help: Don't shoot hardball at a bullseye target.
Do you not reload?
OK, you can buy target ammo; a 185 gr bullet at 775 fps will be a lot more comfortable.
National Match 185 gr. JHP | ASYM Precision Ammunition

Or even at 920 fps for whatever reason.

Good advise. I do reload 38's but no 45 dies and 230 hard ball is all I could find locally. Will be making a trip to Dillons soon. Following your advise will help but really think the grips are the issue...brutal compared to my 1911's.

Default 625 grips

I found a set of wood grips on eBay RB to SB conversion. They fit well
and were made in USA. The grips were described as oversized, but they
were a little small for my large hands. The grips were larger than the clown grips, but smaller than n- frame target grips. Willyboy

I've said it before,, I love the looks of wood, bone , ivory grips.
But, all my shootin' guns have ugly rubber.

If you don't mind spending some money and waiting around 6 weeks or so for John Culina to finish them out, I highly recommend Culina Grips. I have 4 pair of their grips; 3 of them are on square butt N frame model 27's and the 4th pair is a set I just bought for my round butt 629 Classic. They are round to square conversion target grips and feel just like my square butt N frames with them on. I haven't shot the 629 with them yet, but I've shot my model 27's extensively with them on and they are very comfortable to me, no matter what power 357 ammo I'm shooting from mild to wild. Hopefully I can get to the range tomorrow and give the 629 a thorough wringing out with some lower and higher power rounds to see how they feel.

And even though I think they look like doo doo, the Hogue grips mentioned above are also a good choice if you want recoil reduction at a lower price point and don't care about the looks so much. Rubber wil also trap moisture beneath, so if you go with the goodyear's please make sure it's nice and dry under them before storing your revolver.

BTW, John and his wife Jennifer are members of these forums and can be contacted here or you can contact them through their web store ( culinagrips.com ). Their forum names are Kurak and Grip_Maker's_Wife respectively and are great people to deal with.

This is the latest set I bought from John and Jennifer for my 629 Classic. These are done in Olive wood:

I swapped out the JM wood grips on my 625 to a pair of these Hogue no finger groove monogrips.

S&W N Frame Round Butt Rubber Conversion No Finger Grooves Monogrip Black

They add the palmswell that I like but allow me to place my fingers where I like rather than where Hogue thinks they should go.

I'd also suggest Hogue.Their hardwood stuff is nice to look at and is comfortable under recoil. If you're not sure on hardwood, their rubber Monogrip is a good way to tame recoil and make shooting more pleasant.

Quick and cheap.....Pach grip sleeve for a shield. Just enough cushion and fat to work for me. Stays put and comfortable for many rounds..

Found a pair of Pachmyr Diamond Pros locally. Better, I think, but shooting will tell. LGS had Hogue monogrips but only in square butt. Think they would be much better. Probably going to wind up with Smith targets, or Ahrends retro targets, just cause like the look of wood. Anyone use the targets on the 625??

I find the 70's vintage S&W targets to be a little large for my hands. As for the Ahrends retro targets, I've been thinking of ordering a set and comparing the way they feel to my Culina targets, but haven't gotten around to ordering a set yet. I checked in February with them and Ahrends said it would take around 4 months from order to delivery though. I haven't seen any retro targets on eBay lately either, just the tactical models for N frames.

Yeah, I can understand it in your situation with grips that hurt to shoot with at present. As for me, the wait isn't so bad since I already have grips that will work. I'm really thinking of ordering a set of the Ahrends retro target round to square stocks to try on my 627 Pro.

Got the Diamond Pro grips several recommended....better but no cigar. I think Jim has the best advice....gonna clean it and put it in safe until get loading equipment set back up.

Do thank everyone for the input though.

If you want to stick with wood I'd recommend Nills. They are competitively priced (not cheap) with others of similar quality. I have small hands and these fill my hand better than the originals. And great resale if you don't like them. I ordered 2 sets of Pachmyer's for my 627 and neither would fit properly. It's to bad because they were really comfortable and way less expensive.

Jerryatric3, I finally got out to the range with my 629 with the new Culina grips on it and ran 150 rounds through it. 50 were some middle road 44 Mags loaded with 11.0 grains CFE-Pistol and the other 100 were some hot stuff loaded with 19.5 grains of Accurate #9, both loaded with MBC 240 grain hard cast coated bullets and the only thing sore on my shooting hand is my trigger finger. That is because the 629 has a serrated trigger and after that many 44 Mags it gets my trigger finger rubbed a bit raw. The Culina grips were very easy to keep a firm grip on and not move around in hand.

Don't understand why the 625 is giving me fits unless it's the grips. Shot my 1911 next to it and it was not a problem. No issues with my 686 either but it has Ahrends retro targets on it. The 625PC is accurate, fit and finish perfect and trigger good right out of the box....just having the issue of perceived recoil. Hate to pay half the price of the gun to solve a grip issue.......

Mine ran about $220 plus shipping, but that is their exhibition grade with emblems. They do make other grades and you can get them without emblems too. According to their website, their service grade stocks without emblems run around $95 plus shipping, which is much more affordable. PM or email or even call them and discuss your needs and pricing. They both are extremely easy to converse with by email or PM; I don't remember ever having to call them for anything.

Another plug for Culina stocks. I put them on my 625PC and love them. Fit my hand perfectly and put 200 rounds downrange yesterday and recoil was a pretty much a non issue. The original clown grips beat the heck out of my hand.

Nor should you have to. I understand everybody's passion for beautiful wood grips, and if they work well for them, that's an added bonus. But let's not forget that our guns are tools and while I have some that I prefer form over function, for most it is the other way round - which leads me right back to rubber grips and, specifically these...

GRIP XFR HOGUE RD TO SQ TAMER

For less than $40 aren't they worth a try? Believe me they work.

Good luck with whatever you end up with.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I hated the original "fruitloop" grips that came on my 625 PC. They were so thin and smooth that the gun just seemed to swim around in my hand.

Rubber offerings from both Hogue and Pachmyer worked well but I eventually settled on these Thai grips ( off THEbay) as they were cheap, look good, fit good and give me lots of purchase.

That is because the 629 has a serrated trigger and after that many 44 Mags it gets my trigger finger rubbed a bit raw. The Culina grips were very easy to keep a firm grip on and not move around in hand.
Can I ask about how much your grips cost you? I was on their site and didnít see any price structure , yours sure are gorgeous looking.

Thank you for that , I did just now manage to see their pricing , looks to me to be very fair considering they are premium grips.
I am going to email them, Iím interested to know if they could make a set for my model 25 close to the same dimensions of the bigger target grips smith use to put on their N frames.

The 625PC is accurate, fit and finish perfect and trigger good right out of the box....just having the issue of perceived recoil. Hate to pay half the price of the gun to solve a grip issue.......
Don't forget that your 1911 has an entirely different recoil impulse when compared to your 625. The movement of the slide and the resistance of the action spring serve to spread the recoil out in the 1911 - making it a much softer feel.

My 625 is not the PC version but the basic JM. I had trouble with Jerry's grip and finally switched to the Hogue N Frame Round to Square conversion #25012. These are the no finger groove Monogrips. They work great for me. You might give them a try, they were only about $28 on Amazon.

Herrett Jordan Troopers. They are made to fit your hand. I run them on any N frame, and my 44mag L frame M69. The ones on my M625 are Exhibition grade, and I absolutely love them. Other posts above have given great options as well. Good luck in your choice, and enjoy the heck out of your revolver. I do recommend as many moon clips as you can think of, and if you reload, a few hundred pieces of 45 auto rim brass from Starline.

Finally the SFR Hogues arrived from the Smith store. Don't fit the 625PC at all. BIG gap at top of backstrap or behind trigger guard, take your pick. When try to tighten down they "pucker" at top. Called Ahrends...4-6 months. Pachmyer Diamond Pros on it now. Much better than stock but would like a little taller. Search continues.......

I have the Jerry Miculek stocks on mine & really am impressed by them. So impressed by them I'm thinking about getting another one for some of my 44's. You can find them on his website.

Something is amiss as far as the fitment of the Hogue grip to your 625 PC. As you can see in my original post (#6) they fit my 625 PC perfectly. You kind of have to push the grips up onto the frame in an arc and make sure they are tight against the back of the trigger guard. If you can't get them to fit properly, I'd give Hogue a call. I know tons of competitors that use these grips on their RB N-frames with nary a problem.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I've had nothing but problems with the grips on all the MTN guns I've owned. I tried about 4 different kinds till I finally tried these grips from S&W. Have a set on all my MG's now.

Do yourself a big favor and get a pair of Hogue X Grips. I have two pair and now I can shoot hundreds of rounds at a time with my 625-8 PC.

Spokes....Hogue XFR rd to sq came yesterday from the Smith store. They don't fit the 625PC at all. They feel awesome but either a big gap behind the trigger guard or back of frame and when take one turn on mounting screw start to pucker at the top.... They came in a sandwich baggie and not in Hogue packaging. Not sure what they sent me as several here have said they fit perfectly???? Would like to have these grips frequent flyer miles... no telling how many times they've shipped back and forth.
