My new Model 69 not so fine !!!!
So my 69 came in today and I gave it a good visual and dry fire to check the action. No problems there BUT I forgot to bring my feeler gauge!
So after a quick bore cleaning and wipe of Ballistol I head down to my range.
Right off I notice a lot of blow by from the cylinder and that the action will lock up on the 5th round when firing in DA.
Now I was shooting .44 Special loads to start with but moved on to my light .44 Mag loads.
Gun seemed to hit well on target but I noticed what I thought was sand blowing back on my hands...I have a sand berm but it won't sand coming back...it was shot residue from the gap!
Everytime it was firewd in double action the trigger would jam at the point it should have released the hammer and only on the last chamber to fire. Put a mark on that chamber and ran it thru again but it would hang on the last chamber to fire BUT on a different chamber!
No, it wasn't from bullet crimp jump either with plenty of bullet to frame clearence.
It will dry fire fine with no hang up.
Now the very bad part...I get home and check the cylinder gap and not seeing the tight .005 and less I read about here BUT a grand canyon .016 on one side of firing cone and .010 on the other side!!!
This *** going back!
This is my first new S&W purchase and I can see it isn't your Dad's S&W with basic functioning quality long gone like a freight train! My other 30 plus year old Smiths are VERY fine shooters!
S&W got nothing over a Taurus or Charter Arms revolver!

That's a shame. I purchased a new gun for my mother and while dry firing it, it would jam so bad just dry firing it . Sent it back and they seemed to have replaces wvery moving part in the gun-was one of the new fangled plastic revolvers. Never again!
Honest to God, I'm pretty much through with buying anything any more unless I see something OLD that strikes my fancy. I've got nice representative samples of all the S&W's that interest me and really see no point in buying any more new stuff. Old stuff.....well that's a different story

Well, who's plastic revolver WAS IT?
If you are unhappy enough to post about it, there is nothing wrong with naming the manufacturer.
You definitely owe them no favors if they are putting out ****.

I have quite a few Rugers and the only one that had to go back was the most exspensive...a new Ruger Alaskan .454/.45 Colt.
It had a .012 gap and the cylinder timing was off...came back like a Cadillac!
I liked the size of the Model 69 and wanted a .44 with a 4 inch barrel..my others being a Ruger SBH 7.5 barrel and a very nice S&W 629-2E with 3 inch barrel.
Maybe something simple with the 69's action as the single and DA trigger was very good when dry fired. It's the really messed up cylinder gap I don't understand on a new S&W revolver. If they test fire before shipping that should have been caught!
Will call them in the morning for a Return label.

Wow, that is totally unacceptable. Hopefully S&W will replace the gun with one that shoots as well as most of them do.
S&W has great customer service but I would rather they have great QC. Guns shouldn't have to go back.

Once upon a time I bought a used 625-2 that I am guessing was unloaded by the prior owner as it spit HORRIBLY and was not wildly accurate. The forcing cone was cut as bad or maybe worse than yours. My gunsmith set the barrel back two turns and recut the forcing cone. Gun now shoots wonderfully. One would hope that S&W quality control would be better than that. One would be wrong.

Would love to know how S&W machines the forcing cone for gap....CNC grinder with side of wheel maybe? Maybe the tech tagged into it a bit to hard....said "****"...looked around...and then passed it down the line!
Done a lot of side grinding in my days with a few boo-boos too!

I only buy new S&W revolvers that I find in a LGS and I can inspect them in person. I bring feeler gauges.
Most new revolvers don’t meet my standards. I currently own a 686p and a 649, both of which took years of checking the LGS and rejecting a lot of new models before finding these two good ones.

Seems like it would be easier AND cheaper to just do it right the first time.

Yep my brain fart...I forgot to bring my feeler gauge!
And the crazy thing is...I've only had to ship two guns back now.
The first was a new Ruger Alaskan and now this S&W.
In BOTH cases I had forgot my feeler guage and BOTH had excessive cylinder gap for which they were shipped back.
The Ruger came back like a Cadillac!!!

Always bring gauges or use the business card trick. I think one card should fit in the gap but not two. Still that is a very rough guess

PLEASE no one say ( send it back S+W will make it right) I’m so sick of hearing that. It’s easy to say when it’s not your hard-earned money that was spent on a subpar product.

Send it back to S&W. It's painless other than the drive to the FedEx drop off.
Just for fun I sent my blown up 69 back to S&W this week so awaiting word on what if anything they will do. A discount on a new one would be appreciated.

Since it's so close to their summer shutdown....had a dream they just sent out a new gun so I wouldn't be without for an extended time period.
But that was just a dream!

I have most of my collection and never had to unexpectedly ship anything back yet. Maybe some combination of being lucky, paid too much, half my collection is old manufacture, or j just don't shoot straight enough that it matters.
