100 Yd Shots at 4" Steel w 629-6
I've really enjoyed shooting my 629-6 since I bought it last year. I sometimes only shoot 20 or 30 rounds out of it, but it's been on a lot of range trips already. Recently I put a Matchdot 2 on it. First revolver with a red dot for me, although I have them on several semis. I had bought a Vortex Venom to put on it, but I decided that since the Ultradots have a great reputation for handling recoil, I too the Matchdot 2 off my Volquartsen Scorpion and put the Vortex on the VQ. I've shot it with the dot a couple of times already, and got a ballpark sight-in. I decided I was going to bench rest it today and fine tune the sight in. I got to the outdoor range and put my targets up on a target holder, then I had to wait for the cold range. I thought, "maybe I'll try 3 shots at that 100 yd steel target while I wait." This target is a strip a foot long, but only 4" wide. I set it on my rudimentary tripod rest and squeezed off a shot. "Ping!" and the steel went swinging. I think I missed the 2nd, but not sure because the steel was still moving. I let it stop swinging and took the 3rd shot. "Ping!." I shot 15 rounds bench rested at 25 yd and made some minor adjustments. Then I shot some 25 yd offhand slow fire SA targets. Did okay, nothing great. I had one round left at the end and decided to shoot it offhand at that 100 yd steel. "Ping!" and it swung like crazy. A 4" target offhand at 100 yd with full power 44 mag. I think next time I'll try the 200 yd steel. Should really be easier, since it's a 16" round gong. Not sure if I'll know if I hit it, though. Also shot 50 rd of .357 with my 5" 686+ and 50 rd w my 638-3. A good all Smith & Wesson day at the range.

The UltraDot is a good quality scope and the MatchDot 2 is my favorite one.
Good shooting! Steel is fun.

We have a hundred yard steel range for pistol where I work and teach. I often shoot the hundred yard steel plate for practice but Wait, there's more! We have a life size Elk steel target on the rifle range at 400 yards. I shot and hit it on my second shot with my Glock 19 open sights, a couple of weeks ago.I was pretty proud of that shot.

If you start shooting your .44 Mag at 200 yds, and beyond, we're gonna have to start calling you "Elmer".

Keith, it goes without saying. Nobody's accused him, yet, of hunting "wabbits".

You may have to add numbers after "Elmer" as I can think of several members of this forum that do such fairly often! sw282 is probably the most regular lead lobber at such distances (200m or about 220yds, and all standing at that!) currently, as I've been involved in other pursuits this year.

Reason: added "200m..."

I used to shoot the small pie plates with my 629 6" at 100 yrds with iron sights. They didn't ring but they made easy to see targets. I was either shooting off hand or across the roof of my patrol car. Lee 240g SWC Cast wheel weights with gas checks. I wasn't using the best powder for that but it was what I had. Win 231 but I don't remember the grains off hand. I think I still have a couple hundred of those still around. I need to find them and blow them through my new 69.

And, FWIW, I've found that the newer .44s are generally much better performers at extended distances than the 1980s and earlier versions! At least they're much easier to get to shoot well. No weird loading tricks or oddball bullet sizes required.

Rumor IS--0ther pursuits often lead to ''slippery slopes''

This is great. All the old legends used to shoot at 100 yards, 200 yards and beyond. These guns will do it...in the right hands. Nice work!

Dump and trash the electronics's and learn how to shoot. It's only a crutch
for people that don't understand the basic's of shooting!

I'd say Fudd, not Keith, as he hasn't grasped the basics
of long range shooting!

I regularly shoot 100+ yards offhand with my buddies.
Tons of fun. And now anything inside 25yds becomes instinctive.
Counting my blessings until my vision goes as well
Anything to keep you out on the range is all good to me

I agree with 3rdgeargrndrr. I’ve been shooting at 80 yds (length of my home range). While it’s a load of fun, it amazes me how much it helped my short range accuracy

Reactive targets are way more satisfying than shooting at a piece of paper. Some of my loads have never even been tested on paper, just whether or not they knock down what I'm shooting at is good enough for me.
