Default Goncalo Alves Grips

Just bought These on eBay , I’ve had several model 29s over the years since 1977!or so and never had a set that looked like this. Need opinions, are these Goncalo Alves grips?

Looks probable to me. Over the years the clear finish S&W used on those grips yellows, cracks and darkens, and can affect how they appear. I've stripped a few with cracked/yellowed top finishes to find a totally different looking wood hiding underneath.

Below are pics of my Model 25-2 and my Model 29-2. The 25 Letters to 1972, and the 29 is 1980. Both have the GA factory stocks.

I am seeing those grips locally for sale in very good condition for between $75 to $115 at shows (with screw).

If you snagged that pair for less than above you did very good in my opinion!

I wish I could say I bought them that cheap but I paid $129. From what I can tell from pics I might not have to re finish them.

Those are some nice grips.

BTW, besides walnut, rosewood, and GA, did S&W use anything else in standard production grips?

Enjoy them.

I had a pair on a 29-2 that I bought in 1976. Traded them back to the gunsmith a set of Herret Shooting Stars that were smooth. The checkering on the Gonçalo Alves made hamburger out of my hand.

In wood Per page 41 of the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" - Maple, Cherry, Morado or Bolivian Rosewood, Brazilwood or Pau Ferro, and some possibly ID'ed as Mahogany, Kingwood, Wenge, Zebra Wood, Cocobolo and others not identified.

I have a Mountain Gun with Cocobolo.

^^^Looks like Goncalo Alves to me.

Edit to add: are those grips for a K or L frame? They don't fit that N frame correctly.

The lighting looks like it shows deformities but their are none as I took any scratches out.
I also ordered some GA from Culina Grips last week, I’m excited to see the finished product.

I know they're not original to my L frame but these are Goncalo Alves as well, correct?

What are these football cutout stocks going for these days?

Just put those on today after refinishing, you’re right. Looks like they’re better suited to my model 19.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm no expert on identifying woods but given the reflection coming off the photo, I'd say the grips are walnut. From all I've seen, Goncalo Alves is noted for the straight grain bands of light and dark streaks running through it. Very noticeable and very beautiful.
