What is a model 58-1?
I bought a Classic Series model 27 357 in nickel, and under the yoke it is marked 58-1. The barrel is labeled 357 mag and it is an N frame. Anyone have any insight into this?

A model 58 is a 41 magnum 4" BBl fixed sights. Sounds like it was a miss stamp on your gun

Your gun was mis-stamped. It happened from time to time.

Doubt if it's a mis-stamp considering how long it has been since they produced a Model 58. More likely someone discovered a batch of frames in the warehouse, that were destined for use for Model 58-1's just before thay discontinued it. S&W is like the proverbial African village that doesn't let any part of an animal go to waste.
Either way, no real value enhancement, but does make for interesting conversation. If you intend to sell it at some point in the future, it may be a hindrance as the buyer may think it has been molested. So if you have an eye toward selling it, you may want to letter it to prove it came that way.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Thanks all for the good thoughts. I will post pics, and thought of selling which is why I looked at it. Have had her for maybe 5-6 years.

Here they are a few pics of the gun with the markings. Thought by ~2010 things like this wouldn't happen with six sigma manufacturing and TQM.
What do you think?

Definitely a mis-stamp. Or the frame was intended for a 58-1, but when it was assembled a .357 barrel and cylinder were used.

To go from the 58-1 period to the alpha-numeric period that frame would have been lost for quite some time. It can't be a real Model 58 frame as it has the modern cylinder retaining boss on the frame and the internal lock mechanism. Sweet looking Model 27.

A Model 58-1 is a Classic Series .41 Magnum circa 2009. Your Model 27 has a mis-stamped frame that was never intended for a Model 58 as it has an adjustable rear sight.

Right, I didn't think about the sight.

As ko41 mentioned, the 58-1 is a later production gun in the Classic series, which does have the lock. All earlier 58s are no-dash.

The appearance of the model number and serial number leave no doubt that this is a Classic model and not an original 58 frame.

So y'all think that it was misstamped? All the modern technology and quality control be damned!
The box is labeled correctly, but when I tranfer this gun in my state I have to put the model number - so that means officially it is a 58-1!
