Lost My M36
Well I'm down another S&W Pre Lock. My Son Came down here for a Week, and Naturally we went through my Safe. I saw that He Couldn't put the M36 down. It so happens that the Revolver was made the same Year as him 1981. I obtained it from an Elderly Neighbor who was going into a Nursing Home. So Tomorrow it's being sent to my Boy's FFL. Well at least it will still be in the Family. The Old Gent Claimed that he never fired it, but only kept it for Home Protection.

I also lost one a while back (1963 vintage) to a granddaughter. Like you say, it's still in the family.

Be thankful your children share your love for these. Neither my son nor daughter has an interest in firearms. Minewill probably be sold off after my demise .

I know the feeling. Two model 36's found their way to my grandsons.
Now when they visit they take ME to the range. Of course grandpa gets to buy lunch afterwards. Best deal I ever made.

I have already passed a few guns down, and another couple coming up next week. I enjoy it

I thought this was going to be a sad tale of evil.
Glad to know it's a story with a happy ending.

Yeah I thought we were going to here that the OP lost his 36 to termites. They can do a lot of damage to a barrel, and don't forget the grips

nipperdog, that is great that you passed that nice looking gun on to your son. I did that with a 50th Anniversary 27-3 to my daughter a few years ago and she really loves it. As a matter of fact, I tease her about trying to bump me off just so she can inherit the rest of my model 27's and especially my 629-3 Classic.
BTW, why do you need to send the revolver to an FFL instead of letting him take it with him, since it's a gift to a family member? Does he live in a communist state or something?

That was my question as well. If he lived in Arizona he'd have to get an airline approved box and lock and declare it in his checked luggage at the airport. No need to get an FFL involved at all.

To answer the question about Gifting the M36 to my Son, he lives in New York. He can't bring it in Legally without it being Registered first via an FFL. I'm so happy that I moved out of that State 14yrs ago.

When I was first married, my wife and I lived in a 4 family unit that was very reasonable. It was in the city and my Dad was a super nice guy and gave me my first self defense weapon. A Colt Detective Special.
You're a great Dad. I'll never forget how my Dad cared for me in that way. And that gun brought me a lot of comfort over the years.
Now having said that, I'd rather have a 36 cuz that Colt has timing issues and I never could shoot it that well. Other than single action.
Can't go wrong with a 36, for sure.

I feel your "pain" as I have lost more then a few to my three "kids" and my 5 (currently) Grandchildren... I think it is a "Birthright" and they should each receve at least one.... From time to time At least I have "visitation" when they come over and we all shoot together Kyle

Thanks for answering. My guess was right it seems. I know that this Southern boy could never live under rules such as a lot of the east and west coast states have and can understand your relief in moving away.

At least the 36 went missing to your son. Before reading your post, I was expecting to read of another "boating accident"

My sister "borrowed" my S&W Model 15, 4-inch .38 about 2 years ago. There's a gun I'll never see again. Apparently, it's her nightstand gun.

I got one cheap. A friend needed money and wouldn’t take what it was worth only wanted half. I took the wood grips off. Doesn’t look as good but it’s a shooter and a carry gun.

My Son-in-law fell in love with my daughter and my Pre-18 K-22 Combat Masterpiece. He now has them both....

Shortly before leaving on a prairie dog shoot US Repeating Arms announced the end of the M70. While FN now makes a kinda M70, they don't make lefties. At that time my 1st son was less than a year old.
While on the road we stopped at a gun shop. They had a new in box LH M70 in 30-06 marked way down bc the recoil pad was scuffed bc of being on the rack. If you're left handed you know how rare LH M70s are. At that time I had 1 M70 that was my favorite deer rifle
I called home and asked my wife if our boy was still grabbing stuff w his left hand? Yep, OK, love ya, bye Honey click! Needless to say I saw it coming. He is 12 now but my M70 is gonna stay mine as long as I can hunt and his M70 is in the safe waiting for him to be big enough for a 30-06. I did have to buy him a Thompson Contender w an AR15 type collapsible stock when he was 10 and I also found a closeout on M70 LH stocks so I have one to cut down if needed saving the original until he is full grown.
For you young guys that is how you justify to your wife buying an identical firearm.
For our mature members with adult kids and or grandkids if you haven't figured out flying one past the Mrs yet it's probably hopeless.
In the spirit of the post once I've run through all the duplicates supplying firearms to the kids and hopefully one day grandkids I'll probably be happy to pass one down to family and have a hole in my guns. I look forward to seeing it happen. Right now the pool of stuff I have isn't the widest but it's deep enough to get past my kids and get started on grandkids with S&W .22s, 38s, 357s, 44s and 45s. Got the rifles covered too. If my boy has to have the 1 Glock I own I'll just have to suck that one up.
Anyway congratulations on the lost S&W. I hope he never has to use it but think how good you'll feel knowing that even though that baby is grown Daddy did something to help out when he or she needed it most.

Have you tried a thorough cleaning? I'd personally pull it apart and thoroughly clean with Hoppes before reassembling with just a tiny bit of oil. If you den't feel up to that, I'd spray it out with CLP then cycle the trigger, and go back and forth between the two until the CLP ran out clear.

IIRC, you cannot just give (or sell) a handgun to any person (even family) who lives in another state (any state) without going the FFL route. Long guns, I'm not sure about...but certainly handguns. Do I agree with this? Hell no...especially in the age of computers and instant background checks. The whole cannot buy a handgun outside state of residence, or sell in private transactions across state lines is...Bravo Sierra.

I really don't know the law on this myself. I gave that 27-3 to my daughter but she was also living in Louisiana at the time too, so no FFL was needed for that for sure.
