Ahrends Goncalo Alves
Got a set of oil finished Retro Combat Ahrends Goncalo Alves SB grips from a member here and after waxing them and a quick polish with my buffer, installed them on my 629-1. Here’s the required pix with my Bianchi 5BHL holster. Great woods carry rig.

You have to love them Ahrend's grips!!! You have a very nice looking set-up. I have a set in Moradillo wood and 10 coats of 100% tung oil and a couple coats of Ren wax.

I'm very happy with my Ahrends grip. These were meant to be poly finish Cocobola, but they look like oil-finish something else.
I've worked a lot with cocobola on old pool cues and it was generally (but not always) more red and had more pronounced and erratic figuring. Still, I love them - got them from an ebay seller.
(obviously I do not know how to insert photos correctly - sorry about that).

My Mountain Gun came new with Ahrends Cocobolo.
I must say the OP's Alves are really superbly figured.

I have a Bark River Bravo 1 field version with cocobolo grips that match that description. They've turned a very dark red from UV exposure over the past few years to the point where it is obscuring the figuring. You can see where it starts getting dark behind the first pin. Cocobolo varies quite a bit depending on where it comes from. The reddish-brown stuff comes from Brazil if I'm not mistaken. The Bowie also pictured (BR's take on the Carrigan knife) has grips made of desert ironwood, which is luminescent if the light hits it just right. Both cocobolo and desert ironwood are some of the densest, oiliest wood on the planet and are very hard on the tools used to shape them. But they are an outstanding choice for weapon grips: tough as nails, naturally resistant to changes in temp and humidity, and very attractive to boot.

For a production grip I really like Ahrends, I have them on many guns.
Here’s a small sampling:

Those are both beautiful. You can verify cocobolo by scratching the unfinished wood and smelling it. The dust is toxic, which is why some cue-makers won't work with it, but it has a distinctive odor. I was so excited to see what my grips looked like on the gun that I forgot to do the scratch test.

And for an extra $10 per set, Kim made mine out of wood that I supplied...
Two sets from the same block of Claro...
and one from Ziricote...

Hey saemetric. When I was in Deming and Columbus I did not see any woods. Guess you will have to climb the hill to Silver City.

Mike,
All of those grips are spectacular! If you ever have some more blocks of that Claro wood or want to send those grips on to a new home, I will happily take them off of your hands!!!

Thanks, Larry! I'm a woodaholic and I spend hours on the auction site browsing pretty wood. I got that chunk for $30.
I can't stress enough the great opportunity for personalized grips that Kim Ahrends represents.

Ahrends for a BHP
I like Ahrends, too. Have several sets for my revolvers and 1911s.
But I also have a set I didn't know Kim ever made - for a Browning Hi-Power. I checked with Kim and he said these were made before 2000.

This style gives me the best feel of any wood grip I have. Only better shooting grip by a slight margin is the VZ grip.
I just renewed my CC and used this 629-1 for revolver qualification.
