Default Just picked up my 67-5

Hello All!

I posted in the new member intro section a few days ago about ordering my first handgun, so I figured I should show it now that I have picked it up from the gun store. The revolver is a model 67-5. I made sure to take care of the warranty registration and rebate as soon as I got home. I'll soon take it to the range and test it out!

Nice gun and welcome to the Forum. Let us know how it shoots and to prevent another thread, yes, you can use +P ammunition in your 67. Good shooting!

A very good woman's gun as it is very low recoil in .38 special. I greatly prefer the Model 66 in .357 magnum, far better stopping power. Nice find!

I was surprised too! As soon as I saw it I fell in love as it had everything I was looking for in a revolver!

The S&W website lists the 67 as a current product, so I assume it is still in production. However, after a little bit of sleuthing I think mine was manufactured in 2016 or earlier. I estimated this given that the card for a discount on NRA membership reflected the rates from 2016 (prior to the rates being raised). Yes, not the most accurate way to determine that, but it sates my curiosity for now. I figure, with time and further learning, I'll become familiar with how to determine the production year from serial numbers/other specs.

The newest 67’s have a 2 piece barrel I believe. Think they’re 67-6. I bought a 67-5 a few years ago so I could do a barrel chop. Love that wheel gun.

My wife purchased a new Model 67 last year. Like the Model 15, it is very easy to shoot well. I am thinking of getting my own.

To the more experienced shooters reading this thread, do you ever wonder if the "pattern" sizes you see some producing at your local range would improve if they switched to a K frame .38?

Life got in the way the last couple of weeks, but I was finally able to go to the range and shoot my new 67! I purchased a few different types of ammunition to test in my revolver to get a feel for how it shoots different ammo. I used the following today:

Remington 158 grain Lead Round Nose (.38 Special)
Remington 130 grain Full Metal Jacket (.38 Special)
Federal American Eagle 130 grain Full Metal Jacket (.38 Special)
Winchester 125 grain Jacketed Hollow Point (.38 Special +P)
CCI #9 Shotshells (.38 Special)

Here are my completely unscientific and fully subjective observations:

While I couldn't tell much difference between the variety of .38 Special ammo in terms of recoil and accuracy (perhaps due to my inexperience with handguns?), I certainly felt a difference with the .38 Special + P ammo. Both were manageable for me in terms of recoil, but I certainly noticed greater muzzle flash and a little more recoil with the + P ammo. I also noticed the significant spread of the #9 shot as my target was 7 yards down range, but wasn't surprised considering what I have read about that ammo.

While I did dry fire the 67 a number of times before, the force necessary to pull the trigger in double action mode doesn't seem like much. I do not think this is specific to my gun as the force seems the same on other revolvers I looked at prior to purchasing mine (I tried S&W, Colt, Ruger, and Taurus models). Also, the grip feels just right, and my own grip on the revolver is very comfortable. Finally, the hammer is very easy to move with my thumb while maintaining my own grip on the revolver.

Overall, I am very pleased with how my revolver performed! It was so fun to shoot! I am happy that I made the jump into handgun shooting by purchasing my 67! I hope I will have the opportunity to shoot more often.

I think the latest iteration must be a 67-7, because I have this 67-6 and it has a one-piece un-tapered barrel.

Great gun, you'll enjoy that one, Tilheyra.
You must have lucked out finding a NOS 67-5. I don't think they are making those any more since the dash 6 and possibly dash 7 have been released.
