Date of Manufacture of my 442-1
Something just came to my attention. I was under the impression my Step Dad bought this gun new about 7-8 years ago. Well, then I saw a pic of a 442-2 in 2009 and I was like, hang on... Mine must be older than I thought.

Anybody at least know where I should look? I guess I could call smith and wesson. Should've done that today. My google has left me fruitless thus far.

-1 change
The 442-1 change was introduced in 1996(changed the frame to the Magnum fame). In 1999 they moved the caliber markings to the left side of the barrel. In 2001 they introduced the 442-2(Key Lock)

Nothing close to it in my database, but if I had to guess, I'd say late 2012 - early 2013. It's one of the "post" lock models. I think one of the best carry guns Smith ever came up with. Great gun, you'll enjoy it!

It's not new to me. I've carried it for several years now.
I just am confused about the manufacturing date. I thought it was new too. But I don't understand how I saw someone post a pic of a 442-2 in 2009.......

If you still have the original box, 99%+ of the time, the date of manufacture is printed on the computer end label.
Look for a heading called "SPEC ORD" that is the date of manufacture. The first digit is the year, which means you at least have to know the decade the firearm came from. The last three digits are the day in Julian format

The number on the end of the box says 150544. Could that mean 2015? I'm pretty sure he bought it before that.... But maybe not.... That might've been right when he bought it.

No, I had it by the beginning of 2015. That was the sku number... I don't see anything saying "spec ord". Hmmmmmm... There's a paint pen number 21365. There's also another number 3049, and then there is one by the upc code 22188 13754

CTX is shown in 2013 from what I have read that would be when the frame was made. It could have been shipped anytime after that.

2013 could work. I think that's the year he bought it.
Why is it a 442-1 then? Maybe since it has no lock they used the -1?

The OP's gun with the prefix CTX was shipping from the factory on..... February 18, 2013.
The date code is the 3049 number.

Tha that's not how they do it. Not for a long time. They assemble guns, test fire, put them in boxes, then on a truck that day. Within a day or two they're sitting on a store shelf. S&W makes no guns or frames for inventory. All production is pre-sold.

Thank you Kernel. I guess it is as new as I originally thought. Although I guess that's technically 5 years and not 7-8. I did go back and look at when I got it and that was Christmas of 2014. Which he passed away that July. So he had it for a year or so before passing away.
