Default modern round butt n frames

Hi All,

Does anyone know why S&W went to the round butt configuration and dropped the traditional square butt on their new N frame revolvers?

It started in the early 1990's and I really don't know why. Maybe, because the RB gives you 2 options. . .RB and SB. Still I really don't like the RB to SB conversion grips. My giant 629 Classic really looks neat with RB grips. Problem is you really can't hold the gun up to shoot it.

Default Forgings

The RB and the SB require two different forgings. It was an economics move! You can make a SB from a RB frame via conversion grips but you can't make a RB from a SB without machining!

Economics. Cheaper for S&W to make only one frame and back then everybody and his brother wanted a RB...so they went RB.
I prefer a square butt myself , even on a J-framed 22. I just shoot them better.

The real reason was the factory was closing down the wood shop and outsourcing synthetic grip's.More aftermarket grips were available for k frame then N frame. That is why originally the n frames were made to fit. K frame grips. The early ones that I had all wore my K frames rubbers .

one drawback to a square butt frame is that X frame grips only fit Round butt frames.

What "NEW" N-frame are you referring to?

It has been nearly three decades since Smith and Wesson went to all round butts.

However, thanks to Saf-T-Hammer purchasing S&W away from the British, square butt N-frames were re-introduced in 2005 or 2006 and have been back with us ever since.

These are all Modern square butt N-frames

75th Anniversary Model 27

Model 27 Classic

Model 22 Thunder Ranch Revolver

I love that serial number

I have at least four others that are not photographed

Lots more square butt examples than these can be seen on Smith and Wesson's website

Hi Colt SAA,

Should have been more specific, but I'm referring to the new production
Mod. 629. (2018) From what I understand, this model has the round butt
and can use conversion grips to mimic the original 29 and 629. of the 70's.

They did it to aggravate me! My 627 Pro Series is an utterly magnificent gun, maybe my best revolver. I do wish, however, that it had a SB grip frame. My house is full of SB-N grips, but no RB-SB N grips. Bummer.

I have a 29-6 with round butt. A good friend recently gave me a beautiful set of square butt Presentation grips. I wanted to put them on my 29-6, so I made a filler piece out of a scrap of maple, dyed it black, then fastened it to the left grip panel with a little low strength epoxy so it could be readily removed in the future.

That is a very good idea and looks great. If the added piece had serrations to match the back strap, you wouldn't even notice it was there.

I just picked up a 8-3/8 PC 629 Hunter and it is a square butt. First new production N frame with a square butt I've bought in quite some time. I actually prefer the round butt frame with Hogue non conversion wood stocks. They point perfectly for me.

When they first went to round butt I tried a little experiment. Using square and round butt Hogues, I'd close my eyes with the gun at low ready, pick the gun up to eye level and open my eyes. With the N round the gun would be pointed perfectly. With the square the muzzle would be pointed high. Every time. Sold me on the round butt.

I have always preferred the look and feel of the square butt S&Ws in all frame sizes. I have some round butt revolvers, and they do conceal better, but for shooting, I much prefer the square butt guns in all frame sizes.

I only have 1 round butt N frame. Have tried a few conversion stocks on it. Not real happy. So, I put R.B. Thailand stocks on my 625JM. They work for me. Bob

You can recreate the basic feel of a square butt w grips on a round butt revolver but you can't make a square butt feel like a round butt which many people prefer (Me included).

I prefer the round butt on my 44 special, easier to conceal carry.

I just got a 686+ PC for my Birthday and Wedding Anniversary from my wife .. Is it a round or square butt .. It appears to be a round butt .. I would like to put a different set of grips since they are a little narrow for my hands ..

Any suggestions would be appreciated !!

PS : Her present was a bit more then the 686 .. We bought a 2nd home that she likes very much !! And that she wanted ..

Thank you! I thought about making the piece of matching wood, which for me would be impossible, especially since I didn't have an old leftover Goncalo Alves board lying around. So, if you can't blend it in, make it look like you meant it!

I put square butt conversion grips on my 6.5Ē 629. Ahrendís. On a different model, or frame, or barrel length, I could see myself not wanting the square conversion. If that teeny bit of Ďfillí where the butt turns burns YOUR butt, lol, thatís a level of OCD I canít comoletely relate to. BUTT, to each their own. I like the options round-butt opens.
