Default Mountain Guns

What key criteria for labeling a S&W revolver a mountain gun? I picked up a nice stainless 4” 41mag a few years ago. Thx.

That's cool. I didn't know they did that with the 617 .22.

There apparently are only a few, maybe 40 or so, and no confirmed story as to why they were built. There are some previous threads about them you can probably find with the search button if you want to know more.

Those 617 10-shot Mountain Guns are just right for fighting off hordes of squirrels, chipmunks, gophers, etc. They may also take on groundhogs but my experience with groundhogs is that you may need all 10 rounds.

Especially laser-equipped.

That would make a great USPSA stage: “When Prairie Dogs Attack”.

They all have MOUNTAIN GUN laser etched on the side of barrel. tapered barrel. I had a Mountain Revolver that predated the mountain gun but it had no markings on it only on box. I sold it to someone on this forum a couple of months ago. But I kept my 629-3 Mountain Gun.

Pictured are 4 of the revolvers S&W advertised as MTN guns. 41 mag, 44 mag 45ACP and a 45 Colt. The 45ACP is the one I shoot most.

Very nice! I have the .45 Colt MG and recently bought the 629-4 Mountain Revolver! Looks like you have all the big guns right there!

Thanks for all the good info. Looking at the pictures, it appears the MG's may be polished a bit brighter than typical stainless S&W.

One of my S&W mountain guns is in this photo (along with others, it is on the left.) It's a 629-3. Thin barrel and a bit lighter than other .44s but that's about it.

Not to be left out, thought I'd mention the M686-5 Plus (7 shot) Mtn. Gun.

my father had a 629 Mountain Lion that was identical to a Mountain Gun.

4" tapered barrel w/ round butt grips, I think his had horton grips

Come to think of it i think a 4" 624 was practically a mountain gun wasn't it?

These are the absolute field gun.

Four inch barrel.

Shrouded ejector rod.

Stainless Steel.

And, ten shots.

I couldn't ask for any different options.

enjoy,

bdGreen

Or, a little assist if you need it.

Here's my Mountain Gun. A real sweet shooter, serious cartridge, and my hiking gun.

S&W Model 625-9 "Mountain Gun" in .45 Colt.

Thanks for looking at my Mountain Gun.

God bless,
Birdgun

Got this one many years ago when I was looking for a four inch Model 29 and they could not be located. Finally found a Model 29-8 Mountain Gun, but someone else wanted it more than I did. Did finally get a four inch, a no dash in the original blue display case.

The stainless revolver in this photo is a Mountain Gun as defined by the manufacturer. The others are merely revolvers with 4” tapered barrels. The Mountain Gun is wearing custom RB/SB conversion stocks.

I'm sure one will turn up, the research I did on my 29-8 did mention there were prelock 29 MGs. Mine is on the 4 screw frames left over from the Heritage line in the early 2000s and came with both the smooth Ahrends combats and Hogue rubber. Later 29-8 MGs were on standard frames, most came with either/or textured laminate finger groove grips/Hogue rubber.

I like mine but it's too pretty to carry --- I need a stainless MG pretty bad! Would actually prefer a different caliber to mix it up a bit.

i have mtn guns in 45acp/45LC/44mag/357mag. Didn't get the 41 because that's not a caliber I use...........WANTED the 617 mtn gun. But S&W sneakily made a few and they were gone before I found out about them.
