S&W 63 kit gun snubby
.22 LR, adjustable sights, 2 inch barrel, stainless. Pretty good shape.
I see these at Gunbroker for over 2 grand. Are they THAT valuable??
Thanks.

You will notice that at 2 grand they aren't selling either. They are scarce, and do bring higher prices but closer to 1 grand than 2 grand.

I saw one sell for $1250 this spring at the Louisville gunshow.
The first dealer the seller showed it to took it at that price. I think there was a stainless 2 inch 22 mag that was sold in that deal too and it was for more money than the LR revolver.
I'd like to have one to go with my Mod 34 but I'm to late to the party!

Novice Question:
I have read and heard the term “kit gun” many times. What is meant by or the definition of a “kit” gun compared to other “non-kit” guns?

I'd answer that by saying the term was for a gun that would fit in a tackle box , a "kit" box.
A short barreled J frame rimfire revolver.

Kit Gun is part of the name of the current S&W Model 317 Kit Gun™
Which I would consider a typical example. Its also more generally used to refer to small frame revolvers in .22-.38 caliber, often carried as utility out door guns when fishing, trapping or hunting.

Unless I collected early 63s and needed one to complete it, I'd buy one of these instead. 63-5, 8 rnds and 3"bbl. Invest the rest of the money in mini-mags and choot choot choot

M63 Call it what you like.
Wow the term "Kit Gun" sure seems to get folks wound up of late. As far as their value bottom line is there only worth to you what you are willing to pay. For me personally I really enjoy my M63 4" but wouldn't pay any more for a 2" than for a 4". I think it has to do with the caliber as I really am willing to fork out more for a M15 2" snub nose. I should note if I had inexhaustible funds I would consider a 2" M63 to keep my 4" company.

I was looking for a 4" model 63 for a while. After seeing market price for those in my area I went cheap and got a Rossi version for about $250. Its a little larger and a little heavier but it works for me.

2 inch 63- worth easy over a Thou, but probably not 2 Thou.
If I see one under a Thou, which I probably won't,
will be reaching for Benjamin’s!

I got a little M34 a few years ago for $800. A 100% NIB gun with the 2 inch barrel. Dates from the early 1980's. I though I paid too much.

I believe there is a 63 snubby for sale, right here on the Forum, for under a grand.
Just checked the add, it says the thread is closed .

I passed up on a described as near mint 4" older 63 with original box, docs, and tools last year March for $550.
It was a 250 mile round trip I sure wish I'd made.

I'll just stick with my 4" 34-1 I bought new in 1978. I'd be embarrassed to tell you the whopping price back then.

Thanks gang. I got my 2 inch S&W 63 maybe 20 years ago. I still have it and it shoots very well. It's been my snubby 640 understudy for years.
I'd hike with it but I prefer more power than a .22 lr while in the woods.

I bought a M63 Snubby back in the Mid 90s for packing in the Woods. I wasn't too impressed with it's Accuracy though, and I believe that I traded it in on a M60 Chiefs Special a while later. I always regretted getting rid of the M63, but as others have said the Current Prices for that Gun are Ridicules. I'm a Shooter, not a Collector. So 2yrs ago I took a Look at the newly Released M63-5 8 Shot. I compared it to the Ruger SP-101 .22, and the Smitty won hands Down. So I bought the S&W 63, and not only is it Accurate, it is Nice on the Eyes too. Some day I will invest in a Decent set of Grips. I also own the 4" 10 Shot 617, but hardly shoot it anymore, I prefer to shoot the 63.

I paid $550 for my 63-3 snub a few years ago. It's a nice revolver, but not $2,000 nice. Then again, I doubt I'd sell it for less than $2,000.

Off-topic, but I've always thought that if S&W had just made a 3" version there'd be no need for the 2" or the 4" - the 3" would be perfect. JMO, of course.
My personal "kit guns" are a 60-4 .38 special and a SS Charter Arms Pathfinder. Both are 3" barrels.

Sometimes I smile when I see the phrase " kit gun " in reference to a gun to be carried in a tacke box, because I do, and have known, many people over several decades who like to have a small to medium pistol with them when out fishing, and not one of them has ever to my knowledge kept or carried their pistol in a tackle box.
Why anyone would want to do that to an expensive item is beyond me, because it is so common for tacle boxes to get water inside, either from water sloshing around the floor of the boat, or from putting wet lures and hooks in the box, creating a wet and humid environment.
The term " kit " may have referred more to the gun being part of a generalized collection of outdoor equipment primarily used while hunting or simply out walking around oudoors.

Shhh...! They won't be $250 for very long if you keep spilling the beans on these Interarms Rossi models 515 and 518 from the early 1990s. They are stainless 4" six-shooters weighing a hefty 30 oz, with the extra ounces mostly in the wide ribbed barrel. The 518 is the .22 magnum version and was only imported for one year.

The 2" Model 63 snub is basically a Stainless version of the Model 34 snub with a slightly wider barrel rib and unlike the 34 it only was offered with a round butt grip frame .
Model 63 snub prices are more in line with Pre Model 34 prices because they are not too often encountered and therefore more collectible.

I never met a kit gun that I didn't like. So I bought most of them that I ran across. A little light in the snubbies but enough to last me the rest of my days.

Your eyes must be far better than mine, I couldn't see that stainless front sight worth a darn so, shipped her off to a smith in Va., he put a blue partridge front sight a little taller(and I filed down a K frame rear blade, taller than original) on it, now, it shoots fine!
