Default New 629

Hi All,

Just picked up a new 629 I've had on layaway. As S&W gets some negative feedback on their latest models, just wanted to
share my observations.

This revolver came in in excellent condition. The fit, finish and
function are perfect. No barrel cant, no timing issues, no marks,
scratches or blemishes. Accuracy is fantastic. Markings are sharp
and crisp. Cant find anything wrong with it. Certainly looks like S&W has improved their quality right out the door.

Glad to hear you're happy with it! The only issue I have had with the newer generations was last year with my NIB 29-10, but S&W fixed it promptly.

Now go out and enjoy it! Also think about getting into reloading, if you aren't already.

It's always good to hear a positive review on a new gun. Seems with the internet all you read about are the problems to the extent that buyers are paranoid and write off the gun before they even take possession. There was one such post recently where a buyer had read so much about barrel cant that he saw a canted barrel that wasn't there and returned what would've been a very nice firearm.
Enjoy your new gun and welcome to the addiction.

Hi Dan,

I really love it and it brings back a lot of memories (see my other post on the Mod 29) I do reload, but am at a disadvantage since almost all of the indoor ranges require factory ammo here.

My best load was the keith 250 gr semi wadcutter with 6.0 gr Unique. Extremely accurate and on par with a .44 special. Why
beat the revolver to hell when hitting the paper?

Now my new production model is a 629-6. Don't know all the
dash changes but its supposed to be 2018 production.

75Vette,

To be honest, I did expect problems as I bought it from an online retailer (sight unseen) The price was just too good to pass up. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. This revolver is perfect!

Not to say I might not have problems down the road, but from what I see, it should be a great shooter.

I also bought my 629 PC online sight unseen and have had no issues with it. Wasnt really that worried as I feel that sws warranty will take care of any issues that pop up.

Now, show is some pics!

And they check that ? Or you can you only shoot ammo bought from them on the spot ? If not, I’d just put my reloads in factory boxes.

That is great to hear. Personally I have not had a new S&W anything in my hands in years, and have been reading on this forum some horror stories. I doubt they turn out a lot of defective stuff, but you only hear bad news. Good luck with it!

Monday I should have a 66-8 2.75 straight from the factory, sight unseen. This is a replacement for the 69 that I blew up with an overload. Smith is selling it to me at reduced cost, about $50 cheaper than the best retailers if I add the FFL fee.
IMO instantaneous worldwide communication greatly exaggerates the frequency of significant defects in products, and not just guns. Read any car forum that isn't dominated by brainwashed fanboys (Tesla, LOL) and you'd be scared to purchase any new car.

I too bought a new 629 about 6 weeks ago sight unseen and it's been fantastic. Fit and finish superb and one of the best triggers of any of my S&W revolvers, including the older ones built from the 50's to 80's I have. From a bench rest it took two clicks right and one click up to zero the sights at 25 yards. The only thing I've changed is the grips, after a few different tries I finally went with the S&W Hogue XFR's and they fit my large hands like a T.

It's easy to get discouraged reading some other posts, but I've purchased 10 new S&W's in the last couple of years and have yet to send one back.

Hi Guys,

In the past few years, I've only had to send my MP15 Sport back (short stroking - another post here) This 629, and my M&P's (1.0 and 2.0 - 9mm) have been perfect right out of their boxes.

CLASSIC

Down here the indoor ranges will check your ammo. Almost all of them are pay as you go, rather than an annual membership fee. The outdoor ranges not as much but you have to be a member at most, and the annual dues run around 200 and up.

We had an instance here early in Jan, where someone fired a .223 tracer
into the ceiling. The tracer somehow ignited in the Eves and caused
almost total destruction of the range and adjacent gun shop (Barnett's Guns Hampton TN) After that episode, all ammo is checked and must be
factory - either yours or theirs.

I don’t know any range in my area (Western Switzerland) that forbids reloaded ammo. However all of them forbid tracers. Despite that there have been a few cases of idiots not complying and igniting the range.

That's exactly what happened in this case. The tracer went into the ceiling and somehow slowly ignited it. The indoor range went up in smoke and partly destroyed the adjacent gun shop. Both structures were wooden.

It was big news down here, and 8 months, the range has not reopened.
The other indoor ranges here adopted a policy of checking all ammo brought in so the same misfortune doesn't happen again. However
wherever you go, there's always one who will ruin it for everyone else.

Great to hear there are 1st quality revolvers still coming out of S&W.

As for me..I'm waiting on my new M69 to be returned hopefully by end of August. I only shot two cylinders of ammo before having to ship it back for cylinder gap and trigger issues.

Tracers would get you 86'd immediately from the outdoor range I belong to, due to brush fire concerns. Other than that they don't really have any limitations. The two indoor ranges I go to also forbid them, along with the green tip .223 rounds, but I've never had them check my ammo. There is a RSO constantly keeping an eye on things though.
