Default K Frame Red Dot Base

I have a great shooting model 67, but, old eyes are making it hard to focus. I believe a red dot, burris or vortex is in my future. What bases would work better, Weigand, Allchin or something else.
Thanks for any input.

I’ve used one by Weaver, I think model 401 but could be wrong there. It actually clamps around frame in front of cylinder and has a screw that goes in the rear sight mount. Didn’t look very secure when I first saw it but actually works great. Not as good as drilled and tapped but I used one for about a year and stayed on zero real good. I use it now for a temporary mount when developing a load for a new gun. I only use on stainless as it can rub blue finish. Been told you can put tape on part that clamps on frame but never have

I have several Weigand mounts and they have all stayed secured.

I’m going to be putting a venom on my 617, and I narrowed it down to the raptor engineering base.

Good choice, I was going to suggest the Raptor. Philip (forum member revolver ph) is a great guy to deal with & makes a nice product. I have several of his mounts with a FastFire III on each. This is one on my 29-6.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will be ordering the Raptor base and FF3.

I have used the Raptor and the Allchin both, and the Raptor is currently on this 617-6 with a Burris FastFire2. Great combination.

I second, third, fourth the Raptor base. I have a Burris FF3 and it's worthy. But I think the Leupold Delta really is worth the extra dough if you can swing it.

I have several Burris FF3s, A Leupold Deltapoint Pro, some cheap clones for 22s and the newest addition is the Nikon P-Tactical Spur. The Burris is a fine sight but I do prefer some of the features of the Leupold (worth the cost difference?). I really like the new Nikon at about the same price as the Burris. Folks looking into a new sight should check out the Nikon. Turns out Raptor make a S&W base for it

I'll throw in with the Raptor crowd. Here's my 696 wearing one with a Vortex Venom

Revolver, I would love to hear your thoughts on Nikon's Spur sight. It is on my short list. Do you have a pic of it mounted?

I've used both the Allchin and Raptor bases. The raptor is a bit thinner and puts the sight a bit lower so I like it better. Have it on three revolvers with FF#s and a Vortex. None have worked loose. Two on 44 mag and one on 357 mag.

After using the Nikon for a couple of months I put it on par with the more expensive Leupold Deltapoint Pro. I like the separate intensity up/down buttons on the side vs. single button on the Leupold, Burris and several others. The 10 intensity levels are nice for adjusting to lighting as well as shooting mission. I dial the intensity way down for shooting off the bench during load testing for pin-point aiming precision. I go to a medium intensity for off-hand stationary shooting and then crank it way up for quicker acquisition during action shooting. Like the Leupold, the Nikon remembers the last intensity setting after power down/up.

Bottom line -- I prefer the Nikon and Leupold over the Burris and similar featured sights and put the Nikon on par with the Leupold.

On the down side -- I feel that Nikon should have had more mounting options lined up before releasing the product. I suspect they have lost sales by only having the Picatinny rail option. I may be wrong but I believe Raptor is still the only mounting alternative.

Picture of the Nikon mounted on a S&W 686:

All that said, my Burris sights have performed well and its smaller size makes it more suitable for some applications like my j-frame model 60:

Looks like the Nikon is pretty comparable to the Vortex Venom with the separate high low buttons and the ability to remember the last setting when turning it back on. I'm looking into getting another red dot for my 629 V-comp, already have the Vortex on my Victory 22, and have pretty much narrowed it down to the Vortex or Nikon. I have no complaints about the Vortex but reviews show the Nikon may have a more true color view through the lens. The one thing I have issues with is why did Nikon go with a proprietary tool for the battery cover. At least with the Vortex, a coin would do in a pinch.

Thanks for the info. Being able to swap out the battery without removing the unit is huge and something like 15K hours plus of battery life, gotta love that. Did you just remove the picatinny rail mount? Looks great on that 686.

The Picatinny mount that ships with the Nikon is removed with two screws. Those sight screw holes are used to attach to the Raptor Engineering mount which ships with shorter replacement screws. The screws that come with the Nikon are too long for the low profile Raptor mount.
