Most of the time a 6” is not as desirable as a 4”. The one you posted looks really nice. With no box or paperwork around here in that condition, I’d guess around $600

STOP!

Just hold on and stop, think, research and consider.

You ONLY posted an image of a 6-inch 686! FWIW, until you understand the value differentiation between EACH of the various barrel lengths (much less their ages), DO NOT even try to determine/ask for "Internet" advice... just sayin'...

Just wait until you actually have some experience with older revolvers, just my IMO. Buyer be ware... FWIW, I STILL knee-jerk more often than not when perusing for guns... Good luck but be careful.

686 is one of the hottest selling guns along with its predecessor the also stainless steel model 66. If you can get it for under $650 with 6 inch barrel that is a fair deal. Some of us like the earlier models some like the ones they are making now. Brand new models are selling for low to mid $700 range. Any N frame for $500 or less in good condition is a bargain you better buy it up quickly.

One like that with nice stocks would fetch $700 all day long around here. I don't see to many around

FWIW It appears to me to have been polished, which really doesn't harm the value, but as others have said, the 6" is generally less desirable. Having said that, around these parts, that would be a $650 - $750 gun. If the lockup and bore looks good and there doesn't seem to be a lot of wear........

Wow, some erratic and incorrect advice being tossed about in here.

If it is polished then sorry, it absolutely hurts the "value" and it also doesn't approach 95% condition if it has been polished. Polishing the matte stainless frame has altered it from original condition and makes it prone to sratching amd needing routine polishing. And it isn't an N-frame, it's an L-frame.

The stocks do seem nice, it's a $600-$650 likely range -if- the buying market doesn't realize that it has been polished.

Post#3 is the most baffling. "STOP" and... uhhh... don't ask anyone...?!

What?

it looks nice, and with minimal use, but if it has been polished, I would consider it only shooter grade. It would probably go 800 ( unpolished) in my neck of the woods, but prices fluctuate by area. Personally, IMO, I would pass on an altered gun, unless I could really buy it right as a shooter. Remember, if you want to sell it, you are limiting yourself to a select group that does not care that it has been polished

It's a no dash as stated in the title. The finish looks appropriate for some of the no dash 686s to me. That doesn't mean it wasn't polished, it just means it may not have been polished.

The 6" guns are front heavy, which is why they are less desirable than shorter barrel lengths. If you don't mind how it handles with the added weight up front it is a non-issue for you.

I would call $600 a good deal, and $650 a fair deal.

The grain on the stocks are awesome.

I guess the $400 and $500 I paid for the two 4" 686 ND I bought a couple months back were pretty good deals then.

That 686 no-dash has definitely been polished. I know cuz I've polished one just like it myself and it looks to be its twin. I'd not sell one like that for less than $700.

It looks gorgeous.

Any dash variation 686 or 586 in S Texas in 70% or better shape is going to bring a minimum of $700. Prices are a bit high down here, unfortunately for buyers.

I don't like polished guns. Its just like polishing the blue off a perfectly nice 586!

To me it makes a $650 gun into a $400 gun. At $1200...ain't happening!

So what's the story on this?
Did you find it in a local gun shop?

It's a nice looking gun. The 686 no-dash is a fine revolver.
But, I agree that it looks like it has been polished, so the finish is no longer original. That may or may not matter to you, but that (negatively) affects the value for most of us.

With a little patience you'll likely find a much better deal. Keep you eyes on the classified section on this forum.
Lots of great guns get posted for sale here all the time. Members here tend to be stand-up guys.

Good luck!

The 686 is IMO the best utility/general purpose/duty gun .357 going.

The 4" brings more interest and$$$$s

The 2 1/2 and 3" guns tend to bring even more .... thou again IMO the L-frame is a tad large for concealed carry.... vs a nice 21/2" 19/66 or 3" 65/13.

IMO today except for anib 568/581s (blue version of the 686) L-frame guns are all shooters..... and will become collectable in about 30 or 40 years.

Many folks here have posted that any passable Smith .357 is worth at least $500... if that 6'' 686 works for you ..... buy it!!! In my market; you don't see many for sale..... I'd think you'd find that in a LGS with a $600-650 price tag.

I'm not into 'polished" guns but with those stocks that's a really nice looking gun

Glad you passed on this one.
Not only is priced way out line for any 686 it has been polished. When bubba polishes a gun he more than likely also screwed up something on the inside trying to do a trigger job.

I agree that polishing hurts the value and the price is way too high. The seller is probably thinking its worth more because it so pretty!

Yeah, it looks polished and yeah it's too expensive. My 6" 686 no dash was never that shiny. It does needs to be polished now as it has definitely been a shooter and spent a lot of time in a duty holster, usually not mine as it spent a good bit of time as a loaner. The 6" may not be as collectible as the shorter lengths but it truly is a great shooter. Buy one as a shooter if you can find one priced right. For my yearly FDLE (HR218) qualification I usually use it for my revolver qualification and it almost seems like cheating it's so easy with that gun.

THIS is a valid reason for polishing. After considerable use, the finish begins to look very shabby. A soft cloth and a bit of Brasso can make a shabby shooter into a sparking one.

Oh yes - that inane crack by bearman49709 about Bubba's polishing as an indication of bad internals may be a Freudian slip about the author's own handiwork.

may be but not necessarily. One that I see far too often is the tool that scrubs the ever-lovin' hell from the face of the cylinder, usually with an abrasive such as Flitz, to make the front of the cylinder all pretty -- before he puts it out for sale.

It's only going to end up the same way it always looks the next time you shoot it and in the mean time, you are using an abrasive right in the area that determines your flash gap.

That area doesn't need YOUR help, you likely aren't qualified.

So I didn't get the 686 for 1200$ it was too much BUT while I turned it down, I found this beauty and got it for 800$ I am not sure if I overpaid but its in super nice shape and I have never seen one before. It was an impulse buy for sure probably in mourning for not getting the 686 I always wanted so I hope I didn't over pay. It's a Thunder Ranch Model 1950
