Need Info on 586-5 S&W 2.1/2 bbl in .38 caliber
I have a 586-5 S&W revolver in .38 special 2 1/2 full lug barrel.I was told that that is a rare revolver in that caliber. I like to find out more about it , how many were produced, the year that model came out and the value.
Serial # BPY2xxx
Thanks for the information.

"BPY" serial numbers were from 1993.
I don't know anymore about the subject model.
If I find out more, I'll edit the post to add more info.

It's a product code 103497. Sources say a quantity of (158) were made for a Brazilian LEO agency. They bought similar M586's in 4 & 6-inch, too. All in a 1993 - 1994 timeframe.
Why it's still here, and not in Brazil, I don't know the details. Are there any markings on it that look like a property number, proof cartouche, or import/export stamping?

The dash 4's from 1997 also have mixed features - MIM trigger and cylinder release, but a hammer mounted FP.
The BPY dash 5 guns present in the US are supposedly production overruns. There seems to be no consensus about the dash 4's, although one theory is that the dash 4 order was cancelled before they were shipped.

The theory says the -4's were to follow the -5's? (Not saying that's what you believe). Or am I not reading it right?

The dash 4's did follow the dash 5's.
The dash 5 guns had serial number prefix BPY and were initially shipped in 1993.
The dash 4 guns had serial number prefix CCE and were initially shipped in 1997 - four years after the dash 5 guns.
Just another inexplicable S&W anomaly.
