Default Bought on GB as a 17-4 is it a 17-5?

I just won a GB auction for a 8 3/8" 22lr model 17. The seller had it listed as a 17-4 although the barrel is not pinned? it has an ADL serial #. Can one of you fine gentlemen give me an aprox date of manufacture and possibly some clarity as to actual model? These are the sellers pics and they are not very high resolution.
Thanks, Mike

I just wanted to add that, It is not a big concern of mine either way.
I will be equally as happy with a 17-5. I just hope it is a shooter.

The later model 17-4s did not have pinned barrels.

Fortunately, you have the original box and the Special Order code gives you the day it was ready to ship - 4 for 1984 and 353 for December 18, that being a leap year.

If the seller says it is stamped 17-4 you should trust him. . Enjoy!

My 18-4 from the same era is also not pinned.
Shoots just as well as if it were pinned.

murphydog has it pegged. That serial number falls in the 17-4 range, per my database.

I have a 17-4 with a pinned barrel. Love it, shoots like a charm. The engineering and production change that created the 17-4 was in 1977 and the pinned barrel was eliminated in 1982. The changes that created the 17-5 didn't occur until 1988 so a person could have a 17-4 with or without a pinned barrel depending on when it was made.

Hmmm, my 6" 17 is stamped Mod 17-4. It's an AFBXXXX. I bought it new but I don't recall the year. IIRC that was a period when Smith's quality was lacking. I had to send it back shortly after purchase. They rebarreled it. The only problem is the blueing on the replacement barrel is much nicer that the original blueing on the rest of the gun ever was. All blueing is still in excellent condition but what they did on the barrel is a couple of grades better.

I don't know if its a -4 or -5, but it has diamond target stocks from the 50's or 60's on it.....that's a plus!

The AFB prefix is not listed but it would probably fall in the 1984 area.

Default JUST ME BUT...

Look at the model & dash # ON THE GUN VS on the box. I didn't see proof the box matched the gun. Don't be afraid to ask for a clear pic of ALL areas of interest to you BEFORE buying. Then a 3 day inspection period should CYA.

I talked to the seller, very nice guy. He assured me it is a 17-4. They had listed it the previous week as a no dash 17 and there was a minor bidding war. When they realized their mistake the buyer backed out (Understandably). I was the only bidder on the relisted 17-4. It is on its way and should be here Monday, although I will be out of town for a week, so I’ll have to wait a while longer to actually see it first hand. If it is as described I am sure I will be thrilled with it.
Thanks for all your help, Mike

I watched that one. Wasn't it advertised as a no-dash?

Nice grips on it. That's what got my attention.

The 0174018444 number on the box label says it's a -4.

What I really need is one of those secret decoder rings.
There are a lot of numbers on that box and none of them had any meaning to me.

At least I am smart enough to know where to go to get my questions answered.
