Problem K22
I'm not a collector, been shooting lots of 22 lately thru a Ruger Single Six, reload for several handgun calibers, but really enjoying plinking. So, I upgraded to K22, 6", TT, TH, walnut TS serial AWVxxxx, so I figure like '83-'85? Trouble is, it's basically unfired and I DONT WANT TO SHOOT IT! Only other gun I owned was an NIB Colt SAA, 357, 7 1/2", which I never shot. It's been discussed before. So maybe I'll look for a shooter. Most of them online are high condition and yada yada. None are inexpensive, it's a conundrum. I've always believed bless those shoot their guns, but....darn it!

I’ve never seen a cheap K22 I wanted to own. If they’re “worn” enough to be cheap, they’re probably not worth buying and fixing up, unless you’ve got tons of patience and considerable extra spending money. Why not just shoot the one you’ve got? It’s just a gun. Take care of it and keep it clean. If you’re going to holster it for hiking and such, use a quality, lined holster (like an old Safariland) and keep the inside of the holster clean. When you’re too old to use it, it will still be worth way more than what you paid for it - and in the meantime, you’ll have a lot of fun with that gun.

Do not hesitate to use your 17
If you take care of it it will
Devalue it very little.

Mine is about a 98% from the mid fifties. It's one of my guns that always goes to the range. If I do my part it'll still be a 98% gun when I leave this marble. Shoot it.

I picked up a Model 18 a few years back and had the same problem. Too pretty to shoot. The other day I decided to heck with it, I'm not getting any younger and I want to try it. Grabbed a brick of .22 intending to use only 50 rounds at my range. Didn't work out that way. I burned the entire brick. I might not wear all the blue off, but I decided it was made to be used and I'm going to use (and take care) of it.

The cheapest I've ever seen a shooter grade around here in $500 bucks. I finally gave in and bought one a year or so ago that had not been kept oiled and never cared for, but it is tight, and has matching number grips. I removed the surface rust with Ed's Red and a copper penny (after removing the grips and soaking it in the solution) and then waxed it. It's now a handsome 10' gun. Get any closer and you see the boo boos, but I'm not afraid to shoot it or drop it in a holster either. I do have a couple of guns like that, and I'm not so sure I'm the "right guy" for them. I'm in no form or fashion "a collector". So I don't mind a little character in my guns. I'm not in it for the money either, I just enjoy blasting at targets.

The problem isn't with the gun. It's with you!
But I've had the same issues. Have a nice 18-3, so much so that I had to get a well worn pre 18 to take a shooting!

If you take good care of the gun and don't abuse it, you can shoot it for the rest of your life without hurting its value much at all.
Shoot the thing, enjoy it, have fun and quit worrying.

Guns are made to be shot and enjoyed. If not, it's just another knick-knack on a shelf.

My first quality revolver was a Ruger Single-6 (1964) the same
year I got a NIB m17 in a trade. I had no interest in it, didn't
like DAs. Probably because my S-6 put all my buddie's H&Rs
IJs and imports to shame. I didn't want to shoot it and make a
used gun out of it for trading purposes. A buddy harassed me into
shooting it and the S-6 went to back of drawer from then on.
It is not mint, but in very nice shape. Blue wear on Muzzel and
edges of cylinder and grips don't shine anymore. Still tight and
accurate as the day I got it. Thousands of rounds and miles of
holster carry. It wouldn't have the blue wear if I had been smart
enough to buy a lined holster back then. The last 50years it has
been in a good holster. I say shoot em if you got em, life's short.

If you think you can sell the one you have and make a profit worth your time and then turn around and buy another M17 as a shooter grade and be $$ ahead,,then do it.
It's not like the guns are a rarity to locate unless you get into the early ones.
Other than that, keep it and use it. Gentle careful use won't wreck the thing. It will decrease the value of a NIB specimen of course. But do you really care about that?,,
Are you hanging on to the 17 for that right moment to disperse and collect a big payday on a collectible?
What's the difference going to be at that point a couple hundred bucks..
You might not even be around to be the one that collects the big check.,,just reality for most of us right now.
Have fun with it. Or sell it buy another and have fun with that one.

If you have the cash, buy a shooter, if not sell the collector and buy a shooter, or bite the bullet and start shooting the one you have, your call. I suspect you would enjoy it more if you picked up a nice shooter.

You're not a collector so you bought a gun and now don't want to shoot it...
So you'll go spend more money to buy one you will shoot..
So after a few years what are your plans with the first one.. pull it out and look at it from time to time. Then give it to someone that will just go and shoot it.
Or sell it for $100 bucks more (maybe) and never have enjoyed what that 17 can do..
My 17-3 goes out often.. and I will use it like this for some time to come..

Your K22 was made to be shot. I've been shooting this one since 1963 and it just gets better with age!
