I think my 629-1 (S/N AFR74XX) is included in the cylinder recall that also covered the 624. I really like this 6" stainless beauty and so far have only run specials through it. Its in awesome shape (but no box) and clearly hasn't had many rounds through it or been abused. It came with incorrect grips (L frame) so I sold them to a member and purchased more correct N frame grips. I'm jones'in to take this baby hunting this Fall, but want to be cautious about running hot loads through a cylinder that was involved with a recall. If it is a recalled model, how does S&W resolve the recall? Do I reach out to Customer Service with a "send a message" and see what happens? What can I expect? BTW, I do like this revolver, but my 29-2 and 27-1 are my pride & joy. Thanks!

This! S&W is a wonderful company to deal with for warranty/recall concerns. They have went out of their way for me twice on two separate issues on two different pistols, 5 years apart. Both times, same service.

That is a beautiful 29-1 you have there. I started out with a 629-6 with a 3" barrel and Altamonte grips. I was immediately addicted to the horsepower of 300 grain loads against steel popper and silhouette plates yet also the shootability of a 255grain Keith .44Special for woods carry and 200 grain Gold Dot Specials for CCW. So when I decided I wanted a pre-lock version I went with a 3" barreled M29-3 so I could still shoot the hot loads after a -2E couldn't be sourced. Call Smith and have the warranty work done if it is actually a recalled revolver. Best yet, you can hand-load a very effective Mag load to hunt with, sans any worries after the recall/repairs are done.

If you mean to shoot truly hot loads, choose a more robust gun design. Factory full-power loads are not hot -- they are what the gun is designed to handle.

S&W will tell you if your gun is subject to any recall. If it's not, go ahead and fire away with full-power loads. If it is -- send it in.

My concern is that the cylinder is not "serviceable" meaning they dont have any more replacement cylinders. Then what happens, they keep my gun and give me a voucher for a new .44 magnum? I guess the only way is just call Customer Service and see where it goes. I'll post my finding.

I have been wondering the same thing about my 629-1. I hope you find satisfaction. Curious to see what you find out.

They still make the 629, so a cylinder should be available, although it will be the one with the new style extractor.

FWIW I have one of those (bought it new).
The serial is AFP4692 and it has the circle C on the box indicating it passed the re-inspection.
Only a few (thousand?) of these were involved.
I would think that your serial is far enough removed from mine that it was
not involved but as suggested a call will solve the question.
The exact reason for the recall has been the subject of much debate here over the years.
The preponderance of evidence is that it was due to possible improper metallurgy of the cylinder.
The other theory is that the chambers were mis-bored but that one really doesnt fly for the magnums.

Stick to 8 grains Unique or equivalent with a 240 and the gun and you will be happy.
I shot a couple hundred max (24 gr W296 240 JHC) thru this gun and it's fine but 80% of the over-all total were 7-8 grain target loads.
It's semi-retired now.

What recall are you guys referring to? I have a 629-1 and I've never heard of this problem.

May or may no not be a problem. Called Smith and they were uber cool. Yes, mine was in the recall lot. They sent a prepaid fedex and in the mail it went today. This is one of the reasons why you buy a s&w: excellent customer service. They said not to worry, the replacement cylinder was in stock. I will post the final results in about 3-4 weeks.
