About 2 blocks from 1 Police Plaza in Manhattan, there was a gunshop that newly retired guys would go to to sell their revolvers. When the switch two semi autos happened in 1993, guys would sell their old duty revolvers when they got a 9MM. I know of one guy who retired and just proclaimed “my locker is open. Take what you want”. His Model 10 and 36 were first to be grabbed. Unfortunately I was off that day.
That gunshop used to give $40 for Model 10’s and $50 for Model 36’s. Slightly less for the spurless hammer revolvers. They’d sell the Model 10’s for $100 and the 36’s for $150. You’d go in and root through milk crates of guns and choose.
I never took advantage of it. I wish I had.

I do! I do!
They're more interesting and more entertaining than current police side arms.
Here's one of each.
1953 NYPD Colt Official Police
An early 1970s Smith & Wesson Model 10 said by the pawn shop owner guy who sold it too me to be an ex-police revolver.

Here's a couple
First, a 65-3 Oklahoma State Patrol, one of the more accurate guns I own. The original magnas were heavily worn on the right panel and these replacements of unknown provenance (Eagle?) fit my hand like a glove. Points like my finger. Carried a lot, shot little.
65-3.jpg
And a 28-2 New York State Police, a treat with major magnums. The pic doesn't show it, but the finish is a mess, having been sprayed with some substance, which I removed and cold blued. Potential candidate for a pro job.
M 28-2 New York State Police.jpg
This 19-4 belonged to a nearby small town chief, or so the story goes Nickle with target trigger, hammer, and stocks w/yellow front sight insert. Very lightly used or carried.

NYPD guns were bought by the officer and were his personal property so they were never marked NYPD. Way back in the day some guys had their name and shield number engraved on the back strap. It would say “Ptrlman Michael Jones 17782” or something like that. We’re talking 1950’s and earlier. But even then I don’t think it was mandatory to have done.

I was not sure if that was badge or SN#. Thank You. I have been collecting LE marked firearms for about 16 years. A friends father stated collecting memorabilia 50 + years ago and I got bit by the bug. Some are just cool looking, others have a story that goes with who owned/used it. Fascinating. We have picked up guns from all over the world, various calibers, never know what will show up. I do not have a "Grail gun" so the cost is not that bad, most of the guns are worth what they would be marked or not. Enjoy. Be Safe,

This 67-3 is from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Has a tag on the inside of the grip near the hammer spring with "CNMI" and a rack number. It was in pretty rough cosmetic shape when I received it. Good thing stainless is fairly easy to clean up and I bought it for cheap.

My first revolver was a S&W Model 10-6 .357 Magnum that I bought for $150.00 when I was 16 (had my Mom do that paperwork). Still have it, shoots very well.

Just picked this up... goes with my issued Beretta, an old department Ithaca 37, a rare Dan Wesson DSP 1911, a Special Unit Beretta, and my new LTT Elite Beretta with my old unit number as the serial. Crazy thing is that the last three of the dept-applied number is also my old unit number... same as my LTT Elite!

This 66-1 is 1 of 5 that were shipped to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office (Illinois) in March of 1980. It originally had Magnas. Maybe the person that it was issued to (most likely a detective) put the Pachs on it?

Love old police guns. If they could only talk...
Have a hard time passing them up when I run across them.
I carried the G21 and P226 on duty, and while not a Glock fan, still have fond memories of that 21. Seemed as if it could shoot Hydrashoks all day!

This one was shipped exactly 59 years ago. It is a Model 10 (no dash) and was shipped from the S&W Factory to Teague Hardware Co. on August 26, 1959. It was in a shipment of 2 units with both being engraved with the property marking numbers on the left side of the frame and the PD name on the backstrap.
Wish I could find the other one to re-join this one.

Old cop guns with finish wear and dings and such are one of my favorites!
I can shoot them a lot, appreciate the history, and usually buy them rather cheap ( I miss the days of going in my local shop with literally buckets full of used K frames to sort through for $165 each)

A Model 15 2 inch from 1968 with the shipping document to a police officer in Kansas. It has never been fired, so I don't know if he ever took possession of the model 15.

Not as cool as your Colt but the price was right!
I will have to take pics to post...

Glocks or any other polymer pistol will never have the allure or class of a revolver or hammer fired weapon. Just never will. Even my kids look at my revolvers as nicer than my plastic semi autos.

I think the general answer to that question on this forum would be a hardy "yes!"
How many people are actually still carrying or using those revolvers for SD/HD is another question.

Several years ago I was rummaging thru the office drawers of an" unnamed Police Chief". Found a cache of revolvers, seems when they went to part time Officers they required them to buy their own Semi Autos. So sensing an opportunity, I requested purchasing said side arms. After offering the Town Council a fair 150.00 each. I returned home with 4 Model 10s and a Police Positive, all early 80s. All the Smiths had Target stocks, quite banged up by the seat belt latch. The bluing was pretty good, having spent, I know, all their lives in a holster save the required qualifying twice a year. Next time your in a Police station, assuming your not in handcuffs, try going thru their desk drawers!

Here's a pair of 66 no-dash ISP revolvers I picked up recently. I seriously doubt that either of them ever saw 'duty' however.

Years ago when I looked at the revolver on a cop's belt wether it was a Colt or a Smith no matter how worn I felt I was looking at a handmade work of art,now when I look I see a black plastic killing machine.

Was issued or owned others, but the only police revolvers I have now are the S&W model 66 I carried for several years in the '70s, and a model 640 from the early '90s. I'm not a collector, but still have these and a semi-auto or two carried over the years.
BTW, WCCPHD, I thought I had carried quite a few different guns over about 33 years full time, and a few more years as a reserve, but I think you got me beat

I wonder if that Caldwell County, North Carolina Sheriff would have been Bliff Benfield?

I have one. A 64-5. Even though I generally dislike fixed sight revolvers, I bought it for a steal and originally intended for it to be a project. It just sits in the safe taking up room.
I'd have no qualms with getting another PD trade in, assuming I got to go over it before hand.

Wish I could find the other one to re-join this one.

That's not in Teague, TX is it?

This 66 no dash was my first issued police revolver, when I started police work in 1975. I preferred these PC Magnas, and used a Tylers T Grip, which I still have, but it's on loan to another gun right now. I never cared much for the target stocks that they came with, but still have mine around here somewhere. I was able to buy the gun when we transitioned to Glocks.
Best Regards, Les

I have one of those but just the gun and it was a duty gun. I guess I bought it when the Dept issued whatever they replaced them with. I bought it from a LGS in St. Louis around 1983-5. I haven't shot it in a good while.

I like the two that I own and use. My late step father (retired LEO) left me a nice collection, most of which I sold, but I did keep the duty gun he wore while in uniform (model 66) and his off duty gun he wore while plain cloths(Model 60). His department let him keep the guns when he retired. They are both mine now. The 60 rides on my hip pretty regular and the 66 sits in the night stand and protects the homestead.

Revolvers are to American law enforcement as the M1 Garand is to kicking some serious Axis Powers butt during WWII.

It would. I got the gun from Roger Hutchings. The box has Sheriff Benfield's name written on the end label.

Unfortunately I traded off my first duty gun many years ago. It was also a 66. Most places I worked you had to supply your own gun. The one that did supply one I didn't want and you could carry your own within narrow parameters. My last (and longest) Dept now issues a G17 or G19 and everyone is required to carry it.
