Default New 629PC...

Just picked this up, and I couldn’t be happier...this is the nicest gun I’ve ever owned. Every detail is immaculate. The only thing that caught my attention is the Front Sight...it’s a little wider than the slot cut for it...minor detail though. The Trigger is even better than the Geissele Triggers on the AR’s I built. Next one will be a 627PC snubbie.

My pinky hangs off, so I’ll get some rubber grips before shooting it. That little shadow at the top of the side plate was just a piece of lint...brushed right off.

Congrats - I have mine wearing Pachmayr Compacts. Have not shot mine yet, but have fired this model in the past with both the factory wood and then the Pachmayr's - Pachmayr's felt much better in my hand.

Congratulations. I have the same gun, bought it in 2011 or so. I have shot it a lot and it goes with me very often. I tried to post a pic but am having trouble uploading. It still has the OEM grips, which I like a lot, but did discover that I needed to modify my grip a bit with full charge loads.

I love mine. I bought it slightly used. I put Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips on it. I highly recommend the Diamond Pro’s.
I liked the 629 PC so well when I found a slightly used 627 PC I bought that too. It came with the VZ grips. First time I tried VZ grips. I like them. Both guns are really great.

Boy howdy, you got you a handful there! There's barely enough room on the barrel to write 44 Magnum!! What loads do you plan to put through it??
BTW, Congrats!

What rear sights are those? I assume you added them yourself. C&S? I don't see a need for adjustable rears for a gun with that short of a barrel.

Agree and yes - they are the C&S fixed sight I added.

I have no earthly idea. I have a few boxes of good Hornady 44 Magnum Ammo, but I will have to get some 44 Special to Test it out.

I think it's normal for the base of the front sight sides to sit proud of the dovetail with that style of front sight. I have both the 627PC and 629PC snubbys and the front sight base extends a tad on either side of the dovetail on both guns.

I cannot stand those Eagle Secret Service boot grips that these guns ship with. They feel very cheap and the fit was bad on both of my guns. Also, way too small for me to get a decent grip on the gun. I put VZ grips on both of mine.

To think that someone at the factory actually put it in a box and shipped it out with the front sight like that.

The secret to my enjoyment of 44 magnum shooting is reloading and good grips. I load 44 magnum cases to 44 special +P levels and I end up with accurate, clean, powerful enough, fun to shoot ammunition that don’t punish me for shooting.

The grips I favor are Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips or Pachmayr Decelerators. They do a great job of making 44 magnum shooting pain free.

I understand your reservations about the 2 5/8 inch barrels however keep in mind the N frame and the unfluted cylinder make enough mass to absorb a lot of recoil. Using medium speed, flash suppressed powder controls muzzle flash.

I do roll my own and shoot for loads that you describe. My favorite load now is 8.5 gr of CFE-P in a magnum case and 240 gr LSWC. I haven't personally dynoed that load but the book calls for appx 960 FPS. It's an all day shooting load and will still take down a 55 lb steel ram at 200 meters. I have several 3" 44s that I shoot the same load in but prefer a hot 44 special. My go to grips are rubber Hogues although I do have Pachs on a 44 mag Contender and they soak up the recoil well.

I have looked seriously at the Pachmeyr Decelerators, as well as the big rubber Hogue grips from the S&W Store...leaning towards the Pachmeyrs...

While few of us try to CCW a 629, I imagine they put the OEM grips on them in the interest of minimizing the size of these guns with their already big frames and cylinders. I look at mine as a large gun that can be stowed in a small space, and I generally keep it in the pouch of a carry bag that I use when in the woods and which contains basic survival stuff, matches, knives, fire-starter, binoculars, and other sundries. If I wanted a bigger 44 for some specific purpose like hunting or a night-stand gun, I'd probably tilt toward a longer barreled version of the 629. Mine is what I call my woodsloafing gun.

Try the Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips. They are cheaper than the Decelerators but I think they are better at taming recoil. They are a little bigger but they fit my hand better. I think the Diamond Pro’s look better too.

Thanks, I’ll look into them.

Went ahead and put the 627PC on Layaway today for Veterans Day. That should be it...These two and the 640 Pro I got for Independence Day are the ones I’ve been wanting for a long time. Also submitted the 2nd Rebate Form so S&W is paying a small part of it.

Congrats! I don’t have the 629, but sure like my 627 snubbie. I also went with fixed sights. I prefer David Laucks version over C&S.

I believe the extra width of the front sight Base is for windage adjustment.

No issue AIWB carrying with the Pachmayr grips.

Nice guns!

I almost bought one about 6 months ago, but opted for the 3" Deluxe instead. It's become my favorite gun and daily CCW. I started carrying it AIWB but couldn't find a holster I really liked and after a groin pull transitioned to 4 o'clock using a holster a local guy made.

I carry it with Underwood 44 SPL 200gr Gold Dots.

Very nice acquisition! You're tougher than I am, though. A 4" barrel is as short as I'll go in a 44 Magnum.

Darn...should have waited a bit. I paid $900 for this 629PC at Buds, and now they’re selling it as low as $834 with Price Match.

That's a good looking snub and you are tougher than I am. I wouldn't even think of shooting a 44 magnum snubby with wood grips. To much of a hand cannon for this old wimp.
