Default Price Check 686-5 7 Shot

Sold three guns at a large show today. I checked out literally thousands of guns. After going over the tables I found one of my grail guns. It was a 686-5 snubby with wood grips and a generic blue plastic box. The asking price was $ 950. I checked it out and left to look at other guns I am interested in. I came back by it and pealed out 8 $ 100 bills and a fifty. I was a little shocked when he said no and did not even counter offer.

I walked away and did not buy anything. I am looking at a 66 -1 snubby locally but I already have 4-66's. Was his price a good price? Should I have bought it or not?? If it had been a -4 I would have jumped on it but these guns are rare. What do you think?

Ahhhh you probably made a wise choice to hold out for a dash 4. I bid up a -5 snubby on gun broker this year and it went up over $850 and I tapped out.

With a dash 5 the only difference is the IL. I would not pay more for a -5 than a brand new -6.

No the -5 changed to frame mounted firing pin. The -6 added the lock.
I have a -4 7shot 2.5" and I would not let it go for less than 1k (plus shipping)

What I meant was because the only difference between a dash 5 and dash 6 was the internal lock I would not pay more for a used dash 5 than a new dash 6.

I guess it depends on the person people have different views.
I personally would pay double for a nice used pre lock dash 5 over a brand new dash 6 lock gun.

Thought about going back but decided not to. Had to console myself with buying an excellent 66-1 snubby for $ 100 less. Also came with a holster, 100 rounds of Silvertips and 50 softpoints. All in 357 magnum.

The "plus" to own is the -4, followed by -5. Personally if the box was original to the revolver I don't see $950 out of line, especially if a -6 is $850 retail or so

Maybe you should have countered with a middle offer???

candidly I'm a collector and will pay more for things I want.

I also look at it as if you pay a little more today but get what you want, especially if a grail piece...who cares

These 686's -4 and -5, 6 or 7 shot, 2.5 or 4" barrels are not going to get any cheaper. Anything pre-lock will be out of range soon enough, so it is up to you. I have hunted for 15 years for a S&W 686-4 4" seven shooter. Never found it. However I did find a 686-4 4" barrel six shooter and a 686-5 4" seven shooter, both Pre-lock, so I bought them both. I am very happy... but no 686-4 4" seven shooter yet (My Holy Grail Gun). Will I...? Maybe, but I know it will have a 'Premium' price.

S&W 686-4 4" six shooter....

S&W 686-5 4" seven shooter
