Default Model 66-2

Just purchased a model 66-2. Serial number is BAR08xx and looking at my Standard Catalog of S&W book if I'm understanding it correctly, indicates it was manufactured in 1988. Confused that the book also indicates that the dash 3 started production in 1986. Is that possiable? Revolver came with a Crimson Trace LG-207 polymer laser sight grips. Would prefer to get the wooden target grips to replace the grips currently on it.

Nice find. I picked up a 66-2 6" at a gun-show on Sunday, just as they were getting ready to pack it in. I think the seller was more amenable to a reasonable offer than he might have been earlier. Anyway, I've wanted a nice 6" for a long time. I have a -1 in 2.5" that I got about 8 years ago and like it a lot, and a 66-7 4" which is kind of klunky with the two-piece barrel and IL, but which also served me very well through about 3000 rounds worth of IDPA competition back circa 2006-07.

Anyway, back to the 6", it appears unfired or nearly so, and came with a rather beat box, papers and tools, but no wrapping paper. It is the original box though. I'm happy with it.

Yes, my first post! How do I post pictures? My 66-2 has a four inch barrel and has a series of numbers stamped inside the yoke. Guessing it was a former police department revolver.

Welcome to the FORUM! Pictured is a 64-3 wearing target stocks. The stocks would also fit a 66. ( or any K or L square butt) S&W Targets. Bob

Congrats! That's a great all-rounder and the -2 is a desirable version (by me, anyway, since I've got one just like yours).

You're correct with the year for the BAR prefix. Please note that the engineering and production change creating the 66-3 took place in 1986 and the next change creating the 66-4 took place in 1994. The production of your revolver falls between those two dates. The serial number is usually the best indicator of the production date. Sometime if the 3 letter prefix isn't listed, you have to find the date when you see where the prefix falls between two 3 letter prefixes in the book. Hope I didn't confuse you any more.

Nice find - even has target trigger and hammer plus red ramp/white outine sights so it is "loaded" with every factory option from that time period.
