Default S$W information please

I have 2 S&W that I would appreciate more information.
I have a model 27-2. 357 in excellent condition that I inherited.
Can any one give me a value, year made, the first few characters of SN are S268***

I bought a S&W 49-4, model MRFCTG with box and papers at an auction. Can anyone tell me approx value, year made, if itís a Masterpiece? First few characters of SN are 231K***

Also does anyone know of any good books that have values, information on guns?

Thanks to anywhere can help.

Welcome to the Forum

Your Model 27 would have been manufactured in 1966 presuming it is a six digit number (S268xxx)

The Model 49 would have been 1982

Without you telling us the condition of the firearms, and describing barrel length, finish, features, etc. there is no way to nail down a value

A shooter grade model 27 would likely sell for $400 while a pristine example in a rare barrel length, in the correct box with accessories could hit the $2,000+ mark

While there are pricing guides, they are all very poor at realizing actual values

The best book for knowledge of the Smith and Wesson is the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson which is currently in it's fourth edition

Many of us here on the Forum have a great affection for the Model 27 family of revolvers

Welcome! My guess is you have a model 48-4, a medium frame .22 Magnum revolver. The model 49 is a small frame .38 Special. The 231K prefix is from 1982. Photos always help for value estimates. Hope this is helpful.
