So my wife says im "weird" and "obsessive" because of my revolver grips. I'm not asking you guys to back me up and defend me because I know that it probably makes me weird, but I just want to know if anyone else has a theme or whatever you want to call it when it comes to your revolver grips.

I have 6 with black rubber/plastic grips, 6 with target grips, and 6 with magna grips and Tyler-T adapters. My next 6 revolvers I plan to have stag grips and then the next 6 id like to have combat grips. Am I the only one who does this??

The majority of my revolvers have the grips they were born with. I have replaced quite a few J Frame grips with something more hand filling. My competition guns (bullseye) have custom made grips. I don't feel there is a "theme", just satisfactory grips for the use intended.

Only a few of mine have after market grips. When I start getting the revolvers with combats, they will probably also be factory. It will basically only be the stag grips that won't be factory.

Um, huge can of worms! For me, a lot depends on the frame size and whether I shoot the gun much, or not.

For concealed carry, it’s CTC laser grips. Other old J frames wear original grips. K and N frames that I shoot get either target or combat stocks. Safe queens stay naked.

But of course, there’s always exceptions. A few have Grashorns, or other custom options.

I don't know if it's a theme or not, but I prefer Hogue hardwoods for all my range guns and generally rubbers on the revolvers I carry.

Magnas and service grips are WAY too small for my hands,targets are painful to shoot ( trigger guard bounces off my middle knuckle ) and I have yet to find a set of combats that I can afford to try those. I can find an occasional deal on a set of Hogues though. So I buy them as I find them.

Same here. I have to continuously regrip after every shot if I have magnas without an adapter. Very annoying when firing one handed.

I love the old Rogers, them later Safariland grips. It’s hard to pass up Herriett’s Shooting Stars also.

I like to have the factory correct stocks on my handguns but I have a large collection of the vintage Jay Scott in White Pearl for many makes and models. Here's a pic of some (I have more) and you'll notice my Avatar is a S&W 15 which is also wearing a set.

I do too but sometimes I see a gun at a gun show or gun store that is in great shape but it doesn't have the box or documents or original grips so I'm able to use that to my advantage and get the gun at a very affordable price. I don't feel like a gun should be wrote off because it was separated from the original grips.

Not really a grip collector, but I seem to have accumulated a box full anyway.... For each handgun I like having pretty grips to admire, and some Hogue rubber grips for the range...

All my .22s Model 17s and 18s are all stag with adapters.......

All my 3913s,3914 and NLs have Hogue wood grips.

OP, for revolvers.. hands down my favorite grip combo are stock S&W Magna's and a Tyler-T grip. This combo gives me a better purchase upon presentation/drawing, comfortable control under recoil, (I can fire faster split times), and best yet, this combo conceals better in the pocket and on the belt than any other grip(s) I've ever tried.

Believe me, I have a gun bench with a full pegboard above with a whole section dedicated to Altamont, stock factory "non Magna grips", Hogue, Ahrends, and even a couple VZ branded grips, all hanging in their stock packaging that I haven't gotten around to putting up for sale for half price on here or ARFcom.. The only Revolver exception are the Goncalo Alves "Combat" grips that came on my vintage Lew Horton Special 3" barreled M29. They soak up recoil like a sponge and oddly enough fit my big Mitts like they were molded to my hands; but I do lose a bit of concealment with them. It's worth it to me!

For semi's.. VZ slim line "Aliens" for my CZ P-01 and 1911 Commander are my thing/perfect fit. The only stock grips I let stay on any of my semi's are CZ's Aluminum 97-B grips for our back-up HD pistol. They are so thin and comfortable I wouldn't dream of changing them out.

The first thing I do with every revolver I bring home is put a Hogue hardwood stock on. They fit my hand perfectly, the gun points correctly, they look great, and no matter what gun I pick up they feel the same.

You and your revolvers seem totally normal to me.However I do question your wife for making that remark.

For me, I'll only put "nice" grips on a gun that's not going to be carried a lot. For the carry guns, I'll put on some sort of rubber (Hogue) grips for the best performance.

Other than that, anything goes.

I honestly used to think the same thing a couple years ago. Until I tried one and they fit very nicely. Its the only way i can shoot with magna stocks. And the look sort of grew on me. I still don't like the blue/black ones. Even on my blued guns I prefer the silver look.

Nobody is going to hang you, hahahaha! If you tried a Magna/Tyler-T combo, especially if you have large hands you'll see why the combo is so popular. I feel the same way you feel about the "T's" in regards to anything Pachmyer on a Revo especially the shortened versions of them. And they bunch up a cover garment on me like an advertisement! To each his own though. You find what works and go with it!!

I don't think it obsessive or odd, but I like Ahrends grips in Cocobolo.

I ordered grips for several guns when Ahrends started talking about eliminating Cocobolo from the product line.

Thanks! They are all shooter grade so my accumulation has been rather affordable. All of my guns are taken to the range so I find it hard to justify buying a safe Queen at this point but I'm sure as I age I will gravitate towards higher quality. I have kept my collection pretty broad. I try not to focus on one particular caliber or model. I like to have a wide variety of calibers and barrel lengths and frame sizes available.

Yes I have come to terms that I have, what you might call a grip problem.

I have bought quite a few guns merely because I like the stocks.

I have stocks that I don't even have an appropriate gun for ... yet.

I am currently on Spegels waiting list and I am saving my nickels for that day to come.

I just cant help myself sometimes.

Themes, eh? That’s a term I’ve never considered as applied to revolver stocks. Are you an author, artist, or musician by trade?

I’ve never found a grip or stock design I was totally satisfied with, so I keep looking, and keep accumulating stuff that doesn’t quite cut it, for one reason or another. Given my long-standing lack of success in this area, I guess a theme approach is as good as any.

I tend you follow along with the thinking of HRichard. The stocks that I use are in keeping with how I intend to use the particular gun they are on, and that most of my S&W revolvers do pretty well with the stocks they came with.

I love the look of wood grips but prefer rubber grips for comfort on the range. Last week I shot my buddies Mod 29 with wood grips and was very happy to get back to shooting my Ruger Alaskan with the large style Letts grips with Chig's inserts.

The last new Smith & Wesson revolver acquisition I bought was in 1998. The cheesy factory-provided rubber grips on the three "latest" Smith & Wessons in the menagerie were immediately replaced with older style stocks to provide a more retro look and feel to the revolvers. I can't abide rubber grips. In the case of the 2-inch Model 10 it was special ordered in December of 1995 with Custom Shop provided Dymonwood stocks of the "correct" style. It would have come with rubber grips and I cannot abide rubber grips, not their appearance nor their handling characteristics. Now these revolvers look just right to me and handle better for my purposes. Ahhh ...

F75gunslinger; like you I felt that way for many years. Was very close-minded about grip adapters. Wouldn't have 'em on a revolver. Wouldn't even try used revolver acquisitions out with 'em installed and actually threw a few away 20-30 years ago. Thought they looked hideous.

Then I tried one on a favorite revolver. I have large hands with long fingers and the T-Grip made a familiar K-Frame square butt feel even better. I was sold. Still think they look hideous, but the "toters" all wear them these days.

I didn't think I had any grip obsession....then I remembered that Ahrends grips , retro combat in rosewood , are on the model 58 (my avatar) and a model 64 .
A set of Ebony Ahrends are on a 1911 AMT Hardballer.

I don't know if three sets of Ahrends make for an " obsessive theme " but it's the best I can do .

To the OP. Impressive collection.

This is my take on stocks. There is no good solution.

Magnas look the best on pretty much every gun. But they are harder to hang onto when shooting.

Tyler T's help, but depending on gun and recoil, still might not be the best set up due to hand slippage on the wood, having nothing to do with the Tyler T's. They just make it way more comfy.

Rubber grips are the best for shooting. But most are ugly as an ugly can be. Especially on a blued gun. And I mean the K frame square butt Pachmyrs, oh my goodness those things are hideous. IMHO. And like someone pointed out, rubber stocks may cause issues as a carry gun.

The K frame G10 grips are still kind of ugly to me. And the newer materials don't look right on an older gun. The round butt ones are better looking.

And Laminated wood ones look really good to me, but the one I have is smooth and waaaaaay to slippery. However, a guy on another forum said to try surfers wax on a smooth wood grip.

Round Butt combats are the best looking, but there again with the smoother wood. Might still need something to hang on to them better.

And then there is the size of the grip and finger grooves....... Do they all fit us all. Ugh.


My Colt Detective Special is about the best of all worlds to me. The checkering covers more of the grip and will stay put a lot when shooting. I use a Tyler T with it and I think it looks great. So to me, this these are the best stocks. I just wish I could feel the same way about a smith and wesson type. Because I like Smith's better for shooting.

If surfer's wax does in fact work, that would tick all the boxes for me. Because the best looking grips are wood ones and combats being the best looking.

So now who's obsessive? LOL.

I do like how you're going about it. I like the plan of 6 more guns with Stag grips. I've never tried them but I think they look the best and have a possibility of being better to hang onto than wood? Possibly? Especially ones with some deeper texturing.
