Default Model 29-5 ( update post #51)

I will soon be the proud owner of a 29-5 Classic. Here is a teaser pic until I get it and can clean her up for a proper photo shoot.

Thats really nice! Love the chamferred cylinder. My 29-6 says hello. I have the interchangeable front sights and now use a gold bead partridge. The gun is super accurate and the action on mine os sweet.

I am really not sue what the difference is between your -5 and my -6. Maybe the very same. Mine has the larger stop notches but the old cinder release. My 6'' 29-6 1/2 lug has already the MIM release.

I haven’t seen a blue full underlug N-frame before. It sure does look good.

I think you will really like your new 29-5 Classic. I have a 29-6 Classic I bought about 2 months ago that looks just like your -5 gun. I finally got to go to the range and try it out 3 weeks ago and loved shooting it. I ran around 125 rounds through it both mid power and some hot stuff and had a great time with it. The reason I had to quit shooting it though, was that the screw holding the rear sight on the frame came out while I was shooting and the rear sight flew out of the frame and hit me in the head after touching off a hot round. After getting home, I called S&W up and had them ship me a replacement screw, which came in the day before I had to leave back to the rig for a 2 week hitch, so it's ready to rock n roll once I get back off from work. So be sure your rear sight screw is tight and screwed all the way down before taking it to the range.

I also have a 6 1/2" barrel 629-3 Classic and I find that I am liking the balance of the 5" barrel on my 29-6 Classic better; it isn't quite as nose heavy.

Here is my 29-6 Classic. I have a pair of Culina round to square target stocks being finished for this revolver so I can ditch the rubber grips.

Very nice!!! Good luck with it Below is a 29-5 Classic DX, 5" made in 92. I bought it new in 95. 12 rounds fired through it. From what I understand these were limited production

I’m really looking forward to getting this out to the range. I plan on putting the Fastfire III on her that I picked up a few weeks ago and seeing what she is capable of.
This is my 3rd 5” barreled classic.I also have a 629-3 and a 25-9
both 5” barrels. I too Love the balance of the 5” revolvers.

Hey, I was watching that gun. It went for a pretty good price. Couldn't swing it, having bought 2 revolvers in about 6 weeks. A 5" .44 is high on my list. Should be a great length with that red dot.

Great model! Maybe one of the best 44s S&W ever offered - especially if you plan to do much shooting. And they’re pretty, too!

Congrats on your new sixgun.

Congrats on your new purchase. If you like your .44 magnum as much as I do mine, you will be well pleased. I don't want to hijack the thread but I do have a quick question. I am guessing that the rubber grips shown in the images came with the guns. I would like to have a set of those rubber grips that don't cover the S&W logo on the right side. All I can find are the regular Hogues with that huge rubber flap on the right grip with Hogue inscribed on it that does cover the logo. Any ideas where I can purchase a pair for a 29-10 square butt?

Thanks!

I knew you'd find you a 29 and man o man you found a nice one! I've been staying away from GB lately because of my lack of willpower & I guess (?) I'm glad I have been or I'd probably been bidding against you for that one! The 29 Classics just never made it into my 44 collection. That one will be good shooting fun at the range. Let us know how it does for you & make sure to post the dirty pics.
Congrats buddy!

S&W did make N square rubber grips without the ugly hump on the right. I recently bought an 8 3/8" 29-6 with a sq butt and it came with the grips in question. Since then I've seen 2 pairs on Ebay for around $25.

Thanks. I must be checking Ebay at the wrong times. I like the wood grips that came on the gun (50th Anniversary, Model 29) but I shoot bowling pins with my 29 and would like to a pair of grips like yours.

I couldn't tell you the difference between a 29-5 classic and an early 29-6.

The regular 29-5 had a different rear sight (not rounded towards the front) but every 29-5 classic I've seen has the new rounded version

Congrats on the 5" 29-5. The 29-6 has a slightly shorter rear sight unit and the screw is larger, going into one of the scope mounting holes instead of the small one that S&W have always had. Classic, Classic DX & Magna Classic 29-5 rear sights (& 629-3 are a one model thing and you may not be able to replace if lost.

On the 629-3 vs -4 also probably chromed hammer & trigger vs case colored. I have seen some that break that observation though.
On sights, big screw or small, short or long. They had a reason for changing the sight.

Wow, I never would have noticed the rear sight differences. Small screw on the 629-3.

My 629-4 has a flash chromed hammer and trigger though, it must have been a transition gun.

You know the funny thing is I know where there is a nice 629-3 classic for sale but it has a scope and mount on it. The first thing I would do is take the scope off that beautiful gun but I wouldn't have known the rear sight would be so hard to replace. Good thing I haven't pursued it.

You can make a rear sight for a 629-3 or 29-5 from an older rear sight with the square front on it. Shape it and then touch up the bare metal.
Wow, you're in Pittsburgh, Hi neighbor!!!

Don't know about the rest of them but my 6 1/2" 629-3 Classic is drilled & tapped for a scope mount from the factory. I think S&W put a little advanced technology (if that's what you call it) into the Classic line. They all seemed to be one step ahead of their standard lug brothers.

All I can find are the regular Hogues with that huge rubber flap on the right grip with Hogue inscribed on it that does cover the logo. Any ideas where I can purchase a pair for a 29-10 square butt?

Thanks!
They’re out there. I’ve seen a couple on the big auction site just recently.

Congrats buddy!
Quite frankly I thought it would take a bit longer than it did to find this model. I got outbid on two others that I tried for a few weeks ago and then nothing. Until last week when this one showed up. Bidding was pretty mild on it. I expected it to be hot and heavy towards the end as there were a doz. other bidders, but when the smoke cleared I got it and for a decent price too! Go figure eh? Anyways, I’m looking forward to getting it out to the range to see what she’ll do with that Fastfire sight on it. Hopefully if all goes well I’ll be able to pick it up late next week.

I looked at the difference in the sights between my 629-3 Classic and my 29-6 Classic and the one thing I noticed between the 2 is that the 629-3 Classic sight is longer than the 29-6 Classic sight and has an extra hole drilled in the top strap for the sight screw, basically right under the forcing cone. The 29-6 uses the front scope mount hole instead of having a separate hole drilled and tapped for mounting the rear sight. I didn't check it out because I didn't want to mess with the sights on my 629 Classic, but I am thinking that the front scope mount hole in the top strap is in the same place on the top strap as the rear sight mounting hole for the sight on my 29-6 Classic. So you could actually mount the rear sight of a 29-6 or 629-4 or later on your 29-5 or 629-3 Classic, but you would have a bare spot in the top strap showing in front of the sight.

Well, there is a lot of mention here about 629's. Something i do not know much about. Below is a 629 no dash NIB with Culina Exhibition Black and withe ebony exhibition targets. I think I need to research the 629 line.

IMO the Classic 5" Model 29-5 is arguably the high water mark in Model 29 production unless compared to a 29-6 in equivalent configuration since it would have the new rear site unit.

Bear in mind the 629 was introduced at the 29-2 revision run so the 29-5 is equal to the 629-3 revision (last of the SS forged flash chromed hammer trigger combo).

Problem with the 29-5 and 629-3 is that the rear site unit is unique to that revision.

Congratulations on your purchase. I’ve had a 29-5 Classic Hunter for a long time, and it’s one of my favourite gun.

Differences between the 29-5 and 29-6 are the same as between the 629-3 and 629-4. The 29-6 and 629-4 have the new style extractor and a different rear sight as well as the new style cylinder release being implemented during that time.

I'm still up in the air about the full under lug. These two came with it.

Nice Revo! I had a Patridge sight on my JM625.. It was great for target acquisition but miserable for presentation. The sight came off twice when pulling from a nice holster. Replaced it with the orange insert ramped front sight and all was well again! YMMV.

Even though this has a nicely chamfered cylinder The look of an unfluted cylinder has really grown on me. I have a model 25-9 with an unfluted cylinder now and I really like the look. I already have some feelers out to find an unfluted cylinder to have fitted to this gun.

I’ve seen the combination of Black & White Ebony together before and I think it’s an outstanding combination of two really exceptional woods.

I also really like the unfluted cylinder, especially on big guns, so I bought another Classic Hunter a few years ago

I’d love to have a 610 with an unfluted cylinder.

Are the 29-5 classic models round or square butt?

I believe the Classic DX and Magna Classic are round butts, the Classic Hunter are square butts.

I can verify the Magna Classic is a round butt. Here's a better pic, still ****** photo. The second pic isn't mine, but that owner is a much much better photographer.

My Magna Classic's and MC over-run are round butt, also not drilled and tapped like the Classic & DX are. Nice thing about the round butt is that the Hogue grip for the X frame will fit and covers the back strap with nice comfy soft rubber. The 29-5 Classic Magnum 2 is also a square butt just like the 29-3, 29-4 Classic Hunter. Also there is a gun in the series of twelve that is the same as the CM2 with different markings.
