Default Model 64 DAO

Looking at a very nice used 64 with bobbed hammer. It is DAO and wondering how desirable these are? Thanks

I would say not very desirable unless you collect old police type guns. I have a 4" 64-5 DAO. It's a nice gun but I doubt they're going up much in value.

I would rather have a DAO gun for carry. With practice you can shoot just as accurate.

I agree BUT with a 4" K frame you're at about the maximum you can IWB carry. Plus there are many 357 guns out there that are the exact same size.

Thinking you meant to say DAO since hammer is bobbed. Nothing special but good for intended purpose.

I've got the same revolver and it would serve perfectly as a defensive firearm, truck gun, etc. Collectability is low with them right now but they are one of the best deals going in firearms. Got mine for $200 last year, it is one of my favorites to shoot hands down.

My former agency "pushed" them. Did away with the menace of people cocking the hammers on their service revolvers. Unaware of any desirability or increase in value due to DAO mechanism.

The Model 64 with a spurless or bobbed hammer and DAO internals in a great carry gun. Have quite a few. Several NY-1, a Brinks trade-in, and a couple of uncertain origin. Reliable, rugged, and easy to shoot with 4" or 2" barrel.

EDIT: I have two, a 2" and 4" that came from the same former NYPD officer. Bought them a year or two ago. He texted me a few days ago to say that he found the old holster and would send them down to Charlotte. So, I'll start a separate thread about the reunited holsters and guns in a few days.

The NY-1 marked DAO model 64s have a good following, but at this point most of the others (probably authorized/issued because NYPD did) don't show much of a premium in value.

I have one, picked it up for around $300 a couple years ago, and it is very desirable to me! Had the cylinder machined for moon clips for fast ejection and reloads, makes a great carry/car/truck or just around the house or garage revolver. As for value, there are so many of them that for resale a standard 64 is probably worth more and always will be. They're cool though, you need one for sure!

What length barrel?

I think it's a great gun. It may not be like a collectors a piece yet though.

Depends on the barrel length. Also, the hammer could have been bobbed after it left the factory.

I have one, not agency marked, paid $385 last year. The hammer is spurless from the factory and cannot be cocked. If you like model 10s, you will like this model 64. If you prefer a SA/DA gun, replace the hammer.

An officer in my first department was the portly type who often pulled up his pants with his left hand on the sam browne and his right on his holstered model 64. Sitting in his Malibu partol car he noticed that the hammer was cocked. He took the gun out and it just went off accidently according to him, The bullet passed through the dash board, firewall, ricocheted off the hood and into the radiator while sitting at he gas pump. In service training on how to decock a revolver for the entire department. DAO is not always a bad thing.

Well this 64 was calling my name so I bought it and cleaned it up with Flitz and put some new grips on it.

I've got a 2" DAO model 64 I purchased from a retired NYPD officer. The bobbed hammer makes selecting a holster with a thumb brake a little difficult , but not impossible. While the DAO trigger isn't great, I should probably shoot it more to develop better double action trigger technique. to me the strength of DAO revolver is as a training gun for better trigger technique. The only folks who seem interested in buying a DAO K frame by me are folks you are into NYPD guns.

I do believe that a 4" DAO 64 would be a great service weapon for some one mandate to carry a .38 DAO revolver.

I bought one at the last gun show.
Came from the NYPD, and the double action has had a lot of work as it is so easy and quick to fire double action. Trigger pull is super light and cartridges fire easily!
Too heavy and large for me to carry concealed.

I gotten to the point that all my shooting is DAO so I like the idea of a 64 with a bobbed hammer.

These two 36s were factory DAO (no single action capability). Great triggers, too.

The redone Baby Chiefs was a rattle trap. I had it redone for DAO, and it's my edc.

I broke the hammer nose on one of my 10HBs a few of years ago. When I went through the parts in my stash I found a hammer from a parts kit purchased maybe 15 years ago. Factory DAO hammer from a 2" K frame of some kind. Put it in the 10 until I could round up the parts for a repair. I repaired the original hammer but after shooting the unit with the DAO hammer (and loving it) it remains and the repair job is in a parts bag with the number of the gun until such time as I move the gun down the line. And as it is just about my favorite range gun, I suspect it will be some time before that happens.

On a K-frame with a good trigger job, I rarely use the single action. To me, a good trigger job is smooth, and not heavy, but not necessarily light. So a gun with a good trigger can still be very reliable, with a solid firing pin strike and a brisk trigger return.

I have a DAO model 64 that meets the above definition of a good trigger, and I don't miss the single action. If I am careful, I can still take a very accurate shot with double action. I also like the look of the factory double action only K-frame hammers.

I would not pay a premium for a DAO gun, but I would certainly be happy to have another one if a nice one came my way.

I'm a fan although I shoot a 2" 10-5 so this 64-4 is still as "new" as possible from the factory. Joe

Many long years ago, I decided to only fire my duty revolver double action, including while participating in the quarterly PPC qualifications required. It was permissible to fire 24 rounds from the 50 yard line in single action mode, but I wanted to keep things as simple as possible, so I committed to double action only. I knew enough not to ever point my revolver at someone with the hammer cocked, so I just quit ever cocking it. I also practiced shooting at out to 100 yards and beyond just to see what results I could obtain. After some serious practice, I became as proficient at all distances shooting double action.

With that said, I do not mind a DAO action only at all. I have modified some revolvers by removing the hammer spur without disabling the single action but I quickly wised up and began making this change by obtaining another hammer to modify to DAO and keeping the original in it's factory condition so I could return the piece to factory original. My only purpose today for these guns is personal protection, so the DAO modification, if not already done at the factory, is still in place.

My preference for a J Frame revolver is the dandy Centennial style that is best represented in my mind by my Model 640 magnum frames, not because I generally carry magnum ammo but because I like the slightly longer barrel and resulting different feel in my hand of the weight distribution present. Good +P .38 special is all I need and they shoot very well for me in steel J frames. And I never have to worry about my hammer spur hanging up on something during presentations of the revolver or during carry.

DAO is certainly not for everyone, and I understand why. But for me, it's the way I want my revolvers to be. Yes, I have several that still wear their hammer spurs, but they are not ever my EDC equipment.

I couldn't pass up a Model 64 re-import a few years ago. Very cool gun. Looked like this:

And yes, those are the stocks that it came with.

It happened to have, by far, the very worst trigger I ever handled. After a range session with several guns I brought that puppy out and in short order it wore my hand OUT! No, my trigger finger, actually - total muscle exhaustion it was so, so heavy.

So I put it away. Kind of forgot about it. Then someone started a thread about a custom revolver. I think it was a snubbie K frame but it might have been a J frame; I can't recall offhand. Anyway, I liked the work so I contacted the gunsmith and told him about my Model 64 DAO (oh, I forget to mention that I like to carry snub nosed K frames) and asked him if he could customize it in a number of ways - lo and behold, it has very much become a favorite gun of mine and the DAO aspect is just fine with me.

It has arrived - Smith 64 'Airweight' Custom, Semi-Fitzed Snubby

Love the 64 but I like having the SA option.

You can always pick up a new hammer on eBay.

I think my ideal 64 is the 3" with the DAO hammer. I've had a 2" and currently have the 4". My 3" model 10 is the perfect length.

You could take that Brinks factory DAO and make it into a "Combat Revolver". Here's 64-6 that started as a 4" 64.

And was cut down to a 3".

But, in hindsight...its an expensive conversion that you just have to want to do. By the time you get done buying the 64, paying the gunsmith, shipping, purchase a front sight, you could buy a brand new 686 3".
