On the cylinder crane, do the .44 Magnum's need a detent lock on front and back of cylinder crane?

Seems to be the hot thing in revolvers these days. Talking all the "29" guns

If you are referring to the yoke locking system as on the models 460 and 500, it is there so the front end of the extractor rod does not need the locking point, as with the model 29 or other earlier guns. I do not know of any issues with the model 29's system in terms of lockup.

They already did an "Endurance" package on the newer 29 and 629 that pretty much covers it. Well thought out, well executed.

It appears that you are confusing the lock-up . The lock-up point was just moved from the front of the ejector rod to on the crane. The 29 family has the lock-up on the end of the ejector rod.

The only .44 Magnums I know of with dual lockup are Rugers, and their whole selling point is that they're practically indestructible, so even Bubba who is taking his first crack at handloading and never bothered to actually read any reloading manuals can't blow the gun/himself to smithereens by packing as much powder into the cases as possible and topping them off with soft cast lead bullets.

The Smith & Wesson Model (6)29 will handle pretty much any factory ammo (excluding the atomic "Ruger Only" marked loads) as well as any reloaded ammo that actually follows the instructions detailed in reloading manuals for the (6)29 without risk of damage or catastrophic failure to the firearm.

I have a model 29-2 that I bought in 1968. It is as good today as when I bought it and I shot a lot of .44 mag ammo through it back when it was young! That was before the day of long range steel competition where thousands of rounds were shot with max loads and 300 grain bullets that the old 29s shot loose. I think they will hold up well when used with 240 grain bullets and normal loads.

Most folks don't shoot thousands of max loads a year in a 29. If you are going to, I would want to find one with the enhancements made in the 90s before the lock and MIM parts.

The yoke lock is nice, but not necessary.

The Model 69 44mag Does have a Ball Detent System

I've shot the snot out of 300grain .44mag loads in my M629 3". It's seen a lot of the hot stuff from PPU and even Underwood and Federal Fusion. It's been great.

I bought some 44 cal/ 300grs cor bon for my Redhawk. Won’t shoot them in my 29-10.

And the Taurus Raging Bulls. The Taurus even requires two hands to open the cylinder.
