Was this a good deal ?

I have been looking at a new 686-6, 4" at the LGS that has been laying there for a couple of months. Tagged price was $649 and I asked them why so cheap as I had not seen any of these for any less than $725. Turns out the box was broken. I pondered this for quite a while as I was looking for a -4 to match my 6", but I was getting tired of looking and wanted to go shooting. So today I made them an offer of what I thought was a decent price, for me, and they didn't blink an eye and took it. I paid $615 which made me happy. Got the gun home and it shoots just like my -4,,, even down to the trigger pull. I have enough guns now. Almost.

You did get it for a decent price. I now have 15 S&W revolvers in my small collection and I'm always looking for another one or two.

The price sounds fine, I picked this one up for about $550 a year ago. Haven't found the gun that gets me to enough guns tho.

You get a great deal.

I bet if you call Smith and Wesson and offer to E-mail a picture of the broken box and your receipt to show the current purchase, that they will replace it for you

Here is my 686-4 4". I picked it up this summer for $600. The owner of my LGS, likes to chat it up with me and shared this story with me when I bought the revolver. He had the example I bought listed for $725 and had a customer offer him dirt low money for it which apparently resulted in some sort of verbal confrontation between the two. At which point the owner said, I remember Doug was interested in that revolver if I'm going to sell it cheaper it might as well be to him instead of this @ss...! I got the call, came in the next day and we made the deal!

I plan on shooting mine this weekend for the first time. Like the OP I don't think I'll be disappointed. To the OP, congrats on a great purchase. Prices are always subjective based upon our "needs", location and opportunities. The one thing people here have taught me is that if you are happy with the purchase that is all that matters.

Those are factory Smith and Wesson Finger Groove Combat grips! They are not original to the gun, as -4's had rubber grips from the factory (I think, I can look at the box/label) but did come with the revolver when I bought it. The finger groove combats were a factory offering for the -0 and -1 I believe but may be way off. The experts here will be able to clear it up. While being one of the best looking grips available for the K/L frame, apparently they didn't fit most people's hands and so they weren't offered for long. A nice factory set can run $150-$200 to the right buyer. They fit me well enough that I can shoot them comfortably and still admire them! A lot of guys seem to put them on for pictures but exchange the stocks when going to the range.

Took the new 4" to the range today and shot it and my 6" both. Both guns shoot about exactly the same but the new 4" has a wee bit heavier trigger. Maybe it will get better with use, but as far as grouping, I can shoot the new gun every bit as good as the old. All in all, very happy.

Sounds like all is well. Some consider there to be a steep difference between the older versus more modern manufacturing of Smith revolvers. Sometimes I wonder if the old ones just feel slicker cause they are more broken in? Either way the 686 is solid revolver design that I feel everyone should own or try out at least once!

There's a 4" 686 no dash on a local trade site in my area for $625.

Listed as in great shape, except it's missing the cylinder release, and box.
