Default Another which .44 mag thread

Thinking about taking my recently acquired 28-2 to gun show this weekend and try to trade up to a 29 or 629.
I already have a 6" 629, and I'm trying to decide if I want a 3" or a 4"
I have a 3" 686p , and like the balance and shoot it well, but thinking 3" might be short for .44. And with the larger frame the 4" might balance about the same as my 686p.

Any thoughts from those that shoot both?
And I do shoot magnums, there are no .44 special rounds to be found around here.
Thanks

I have a 3” 629 and it’s not bad with 240 grain factory ammo. My only other 44 Magnums are 6.5” and 9.5” and they’re very tame.

I'm partial to 3" bbls. You'll lose a bit of velocity but they are better for carry IMO.

Since you have a 686+,if you trade for a 69(2 3/4 in.)all your holsters will interchange and this gives you a long and short bbl. 44 Mag.

I love N-frame snubbies.

A 3" Model 29 is one of the few 44 Magnum revolvers that I own. The others are a 4" 629 and a 6 1/2" 29. Plus the SWCA anniversary Mountain Revovler

Not being a 44 Magnum fan (not sure why this is), I hardly shoot it. I just think it is cute . . . but I think most snubbies are cute

I like the look of the 4", especially from the business end. The rounded crown on the non- full underlug barrel just looks cool. My 6" does not have the full underlug either.

Well, I would say the 4". If for no other reason, the better sighting radius. You, did not say the intended use like concealed carry. Also, for me, I am not fond of hand cannons. I have a 5" classic DX M29 full lug, and a 6" 629 not full lug currently

I have both.

The 3" M629 is a bit easier to carry, but really there's not much difference. Lately I've been carrying the 4" M29, and I plan to continue.

If I had to choose, I'd pick the M29 because it's square butt and fits my hand better. But it's really a coin toss as they are both brilliant guns.

Which to get depends largely on what you intend to do with it.
For lots of casual carrying when walking and/or concealed carry, I'd get the 3".
For less frequent open carry, hunting, and range time I'd get the 4".

If you don't plan to carry, then you might look around and see if you can find a 29 Classic 5" gun then. I like the looks of the full underlug barrel on my 29-6 I recently bought and the extra weight helps tame recoil and muzzle rise with full bore 44 Mag ammo. Not to knock the shorter barrel guns at all; just giving you some more food for thought.

4 inch 29 but I'm not sure trading a 28 for a 29 is a "trade UP"!

I've shot my M629-8 Deluxe and M29-3 (both 3" barrels) quite a bit with Full-House .44Mags at steel and I love them. Both Revolvers weigh over 40oz's and balance very, very well. While I do enjoy a diet of medium and hot .44Specials I have to say it's a 60/40 split of .44Mags or .44Specials. I enjoy them both but .44Special is getting a little ridiculous cost wise for factory loadings. Thankfully I'm set-up to start cranking the Specials out on unfired Starline Brass.

My 3" "N" Frames are carry pieces; certainly in the carry rotation. And for the Woods there is no other choice for me! I don't yet trust my personal reloads for the Woods yet so it's either 255 grain Keith Specials or 305grain Hard Cast Keith's well over 1100fps from Underwood. I carry the Specials 90% of the time because they will pop the snot out of any 4 legged problem in the deep south! But I shoot a lot of 300 grain PPU at steel.

So, to answer your question, yes, you will enjoy the balance, feel, carry-ability, and recoil impulse of these well balanced 3" Magnums!

True on all accounts! And as to the velocity aspect... in this caliber and loading, a 300 grain "Keith" projectile moving at 1,150fps from a 3" barrel instead of 1,285fps from an 8 3/8" barrel... a bear or whatever is creeping up on you in the woods isn't going to know the difference! All it's going to know is it chose the wrong "one" today!

Oh I want a non-fluted cylinder version some day! That M29 with the full underlug looks to be a wonderfully balanced carry piece.

If you're not going to carry it, get the 4" all day, every day. If you want some reasonably priced 44 spls (or somewhat mild 44 mag) check out LAX ammo. You can get free shipping with a new account.

Would get the 4" but would not get rid of a 28-2 to do so. 28-2 is a fine weapon,I love both of mine.

I understand the commit about getting rid of the 28-2.
But... I'm trying to keep my gun collection " modest". And set myself to 10 gun limit, that got puhed back up to 12 already. The revolvers I have are a 686p 3"( my nightstand gun), 4" 617, 6" 629, and 6" 28-2.
And I have a 1894 in .44.
So the 28-2 is kind of a oddball as far as my collection goes. A shorter barrel, stainless .44 would round it out better.

Forcing yourself to "buy one-sell one" to maintain an arbitrary number is only a recipe for regret and heartbreak. If you really don't like having or shooting the 28-2 then fine, move it along. But if it's a hard choice made to keep the numbers down, then keep it. My system is "buy one-sell never." I've only sold one gun, and that was because even though it was a fine gun, I just found that I didn't really want to shoot it.

I'm not emotionally attached to it. And if I was going to go do just about any kind of shooting, I'd rather grab my 629 over it. More fun to shoot, better trigger, bigger hole.
So, 28-2 would be left sitting, until yearly cleaning time, so off she goes.

I said I'd keep it to 5, then 10, then 14, and now that's all shot to Compton..

I sell a few guns every now and then but it's only because I've worked my way into something that I like better, is better/more functional, that I've tailored my specific need to, for that particular gun.

Example: I'm selling my 629-8 3" barreled Deluxe now that I have both a 3" barreled M29 Lew Horton Special and a 3" barreled 629-5 BackPacker with a full underlug. Both the LHS and Backpacker balance a bit better, are Pre-Lock, and are timed to almost perfection, have better triggers, etc. The Deluxe got me into .44Mag/Special caliber for a Woods-Gun and also CCW. But I'd like to recoup some of the costs for the LHS and the BP and there is only so much room in the safe.

Sounds like you are doing something similar. Just make sure you sell it to someone that will really appreciate it and it makes it much easier to sell. My brother buys 80% of the guns I've sold.

I don't have enough guns yet to ever consider selling one before buying another.

I am trying to decide which M29 that I want. This is going to be a tough choice.

Well, the plan is to try to trade. 28-2 might be on someone's wish list and they might have a 29 or 629 that they cant handle recoil.

I also have a nice 28-2 / 6" barrel . I like it especially for the 180 gr cast bullet full magnum loads using 296 . The longer sight radius + the increased velocity of the longer barrel are very appealing to me . I would suggest buy the 29 outright , shoot it and take at least 30 days to decide the future of the 28 . You may find the 29 is just not appealing to you . Regards, Paul

As suggested keep the 28-2, they are getting harder to find at a reasonable price. As far as the .44 magnum, I have a 629-4 5" and I love it. The 5" has a great balance in the N Frame.

IMHO, it comes down to what you are gonna use it for. For me, in .44 and shooting legitimate mag loads, 4" and shorter is more for CWC and glovebox and something not thought of as a range toy. Not something I enjoy putting a coupla hundred rounds downrange with in an afternoon. My favorites for the range and hunting are 5" and longer. A 7 5/8" P.C. Magnum Hunter is my favorite shooting revolver. Easy on the hands/wrists and shoots like a laser. But not something I would want to tote around for a BG or SD.

So, drove out into the Everglades around 11am and followed the signs to the gun show, it was at a Indian casino.
I didn't find anything worth trading for, but on the way in, I heard shooting. I asked the people there and they told be that there was a public range across the street. So I went over there and shot about 70 rounds out of my 629 6" .
It was hot so went back to casino and did the $12 buffet.
Then went and hit the arcade slots, bam = $840.00
The exact price of a new 629 3" delux.
My cards have been decided for me, thank you very much!!
Pics for proof.

It was hot so went back to casino and did the $12 buffet.
Then went and hit the arcade slots, bam = $840.00
The exact price of a new 629 3" delux.
My cards have been decided for me, thank you very much!!
Pics for proof.
SAWEEEET! Looks like you were meant to keep the M28 after all - at least for the time being.

Another vote here for keeping the 28-2. No S&W collection is complete without at least one Highway Patrolman!

I carry my 629 5" Classic (full-underlug) every day, from pajamas-off until pajamas-on. In a homemade under-the-shirt vertical shoulder holster. Conceals very well, and is very comfortable. Works with a tucked-in, lightweight short-sleeved summer shirt (without any vest, jacket, or any other cover garment).

Intriguing description. Got any photos of this unique sounding holster?

I don't have any pictures, but I can provide a description. The most important part of the rig is the harness ... that's what's most unique. I originally developed the harness many years ago, for my ultralight S&W 360sc scandium/titanium .357 J-Frame snubby. The primary part is a one-piece 1" (on the harness for that first gun) elastic strap. It winds from the upper-rear of the holster, across the upper part of my back (just behind and below my neck), then over the top of my right shoulder, down the right side of my chest, then curving under my right arm, around my lower right torso, across my lower back, and finally connecting to the lower rear part of the holster. There is also a 1" (on the harness for that first gun) elastic piece that goes from the upper-front of the holster upward and connects to the one-piece strap on the left-rear side of my neck, on my upper back. That strap, together with the one-piece strap, form the upper-two arms of a triangle that my left arm sticks through, with the top of the holster forming the base of the triangle ... in fact, that's how I put it on every morning: I hold the holstered gun in my right hand, and stick my left arm through that triangle. Then, I stick my right arm through the one-piece strap below my right shoulder and behind my back, and the one-piece strap snaps itself into place. The one-piece strap, together with the shorter strap that is attached to it, forming the triangle above the holster, constitute the load-bearing part of the harness ... they distribute the load over a broad area of my body, so that no single area feels the whole load. There are two other elastic straps with connectors, one going roughly horizontally across my chest (with its connector in my sternum area), connecting the descending 1" strap on the right side of my chest with the front of my holster (about a third of the way from the top). The other strap runs diagonally across my chest, also with its connector at my sternum, connecting the lower front of the holster with the upper part of the one-piece elastic strap that runs down the right side of my chest. Those two straps aren't load-bearing, but they keep the gun from flopping around, and snug it in close to my body. There is also an important "anti-sway" non-elastic strap that snugly connects the top-rear part of the holster to the part of the one-piece elastic strap that wraps around the lower part of my right torso. That anti-sway non-elastic strap prevents the top part of the holster from being pulled forward by the weight of the gun when I bend over (like when picking up something off the floor). As a result of all those extra non-load-bearing straps, the gun doesn't flop around at all, no matter how I move.

It took many "trials-and-errors" to arrive at that design ... my wife had to untangle me many times from the ones that didn't work! All of the other harnesses that I have made (for different guns) have used 2" KNITTED elastic strap instead of the 1" strap. The knitted webbing conforms better to compound curves than either the braided or the woven elastic straps. And the load-bearing straps were increased to 2" width to support the greater weight of the bigger guns. The second harness I made was for my two"government-size" 1911's, and the holster was made out of thick but soft leather. All of the other holsters are made out of heavy cotton cloth. The third harness was for my S&W 69 L-Frame .44mag, and the last one is for my 5" S&W 629 N-Frame .44mag.

Here's a jpeg of me holding the holster harness for the S&W 69 4-1/4" L-Frame .44mag:

(I don't know why this image got rotated 90 degrees ... when I click on it, it is displayed correctly. If anyone can tell me how to change that, I'll be glad to try.)
