Been trying to find a good price on a set of combats forever.Most of the time I see them but even beat up (finish wise ) they command a premium. Found these and had to compare with pictures of other sets to make sure they weren't fakes.Obviously the seller either didn't know what he had or just wanted them gone.

Any more the grips are becoming as expensive as some of the k frames you find them on! While most nice k frame and L frame revolvers are in the $400+ range, it's crazy to consider the value of combat grips being $200-$250 in some circles.

ACTUALLY IMHO, $200.-$250. IS NOT OUTRAGEOUS---ESPECIALLY FOR SQUARE BUTT COMBATS....

Since I don't like the feel in my hand, I sold them. And you're right on value. N frame are even more.

I was looking at some older threads here, and found one with a member that has several drawers full of all different style and vintage grips. Lots of $$$$..

I have a total of $78.14 in them with shipping and insurance..I really shouldn't have spent the money but I couldn't walk away from that.

As mentioned above, these seem to go for a premium, and I can't justify $200-$300 when the gun only cost me $400-$500 or so. So I've been looking for a set of these for quite some time.

There's a couple of people in the area who stop into the gun shops within a good radius of where I live and clean out all the S&W targets and combats. I have seen 2 pairs since I learned what they are. One was on a 66 I should have bought ( lack of funds at the time prevented me ) and the set I have in my hands.

One other set is on my buddy's 66 that I have been pestering him to sell me for probably almost 20 years.

I just happened to find these on an auction and caught em before someone else did.

Last year I bought a 3" 64 off GB that had a flawless set of combats on it.

Posted a pic of the gun here before I actually received it, and got a PM offering me $225 for them. I had the grips/stocks sold before I even got the gun.

I bought a 681 last year for 300.00 and it had a perfect set on it

Got two pairs from way back. Unbelievable prices. They are not that great

I love the looks, but they are just too big for my hands. I shoot with Hogue rubber grips on most of my guns, but a have a few on some guns just for looks. some years back I bought a set of N frame square butt, but they are just too big to shoot with.

Maybe one of these days I will find a very used set I can buy reasonable and rework and refinish to a smaller size.

The N Frame ones seem to be really rarer than the others and much more expensive when you see a pair on EBAY. That being said, they are like holding a well-finished broom handle in your hand. I don't even have my pair on a gun. The K Frame ones are excellent, all in use on my Smiths, and I would buy more sets. Kind of funny that during the same time period Smith made something terrible and something great at the same time.

I agree as these grips seem to be everyone's eye candy but no one keeps them on the gun to shoot with. For me they (k and L frame) fit my hands great except for the pinky finger, something about that groove just doesn't align. I've had two sets of combat grips, both for 686's that I've purchased. The first a 6" that I bought for $600 and flipped it for $800, the guy who bought was happy and planned on separating the two. My latest purchase (shared in a couple of threads) was this 686-4 4" with non-original combat grips and box for $600. This revolver balances better for me, the 6" was too front heavy. This will be staying in my collection, with the combat grips on!

If that is a square butt 686-4, it is even more unique. If it is a round butt with round to square conversion stocks, they could be Culinas. Nice gun and stocks no matter what.

I love em and have found some fantastic deals locally on them through the years

I think the 2 1/2 inch has the RB, whereas the 4 inch and over has a SB

I respectfully disagree with "...but no one keeps them on the gun to shoot with." They are the most comfortable grips for actual shooting use (for me, at least) to ever leave the S&W factory. My first set of square FGSC grips came on a round butt Model 10 snub, but quickly got moved to my Model 66 ND 4". I shot some PPC competition with that gun and a full house bull barrel PPC gun for several years, always with that grip type. It is only when I go to well fitted custom grips that I find any improvement over these grips for my use.

Do the round butt combats bring the same crazy money?

I have seen some at 300.00, asking that is. I remember when the wood game was being played on competition shotguns. look at the pic below. Care to make a guess what that blank might cost today? This stock was made 25 years ago for me by Paul Hilmer. Now days, I do not care if it is made out of a fence post, so long as it fits

If you can afford the high dollar grips their price isn’t so much of an issue. I have two pair of factory combats, one set came with a gun, the other set came with a thanks for your purchase receipt. The pair that came with a gun were affordable, the other pair less affordable

AFAIK, yes.

I currently have two sets left after owning 5 sets at one time. One set is on a S&W 17-4 with 83/8 inch barrel and the other set is on a Pre Model 14 with 6 inch barrel.

My perspective with the combat grips is only buy them with the gun they are on. As they are usually less expensive with respect to the value of the firearm and you can always throw in a $15 monogrip and sell the revolver! Buying them on their own usually results in a greater investment.

IMHO, YOUR M686 IS GORGEOUS. THE 4" BARREL SMITHS ARE MY FAVORITE LENGTH. THEY BALANCE BEST TO THE EYE, AND IN THE HAND. THE -4 VERSION IS THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER ITERATION OF THE M686. THE SQUARE BUTT MODELS ARE HARD TO FIND, AND YOUR COMBATS SET IT OFF PERFECTLY. BTW--NICE K/L FRAME, SB COMBATS ARE ROUTINELY LISTED FOR $350, ON EBAY.......

I think I’ve got another two pairs in a box in the workshop, just in case.

This package will never be opened by me... unless a nice 4” 617 falls in my lap, which is highly unlikely

Nowadays it seems like style has gone out of style.

I am in the minority.They don't fill the gap behind the trigger guard. I broke my middle finger on my right hand when I was a kid. Guess it never healed correctly. Anything that recoils is painful with Combats .

But that's just me. They do look nice. I sold my last set to a forum member. It was almost a even trade for a 3" model 60.

Nice, from the description it looks like they were made before the 617 and 686 existed.

Beginning about 30 years ago I made a one man cult of getting combats and fitting them to all of my “modern” K-frame revolvers. The last set I bought was about 5 years ago at a small show up in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. They had a couple of tiny scuff marks on them from being carried (or stored improperly?) and back then I only paid about $40-50 for them IIRC. Now I’m selling off some guns and related stuff so I’ll have to look at my grip stash very hard to see which I really need for my “twilight years” and which ones can help finance the “late afternoon.”

The one I could never find was a round to square conversion in the S&W Combat. I have the Sq Butt on my 16-4, and would love to put a pair on my 617-6 (Rd Butt). I just don't think S&W ever made the Rd to Sq Butt conversion stocks. I have never seen any.
