Tell me why I should not buy the 640 Pro?
Was just shooting my 642 J Frame and my Glocks at the range and my 642 absolutely loves the Speer Gold Dot SB 135 grn +P round. I was amazed at the accuracy I was getting from that round out of my new 642.
Of course, as I was leaving I stopped and looked at the new stuff in the glass and saw they had a 640 Pro. I asked to see it and the noticed the trigger was so much better than my stock 642 and the weight of the gun made me think that it would be pleasant to shoot opposed to the 642. I am just on the fence since it the asking was $750.00. Guy said he could take a little off of the price but not much. I was thinking they were going to take off about $30.00.
So, I ask you fellow Pro owners what you think of your gun and if you actually have shot yours a bunch and carried it or not. I am a auto loader guy due to my job, but every now and then I use my 642 for ccw and thought the Pro would be nice to have, don't know if I would carry it that much over the 642 though, but I sure did like it allot before telling myself to leave before I buy it. Decisions, decisions... Would appreciate some you you fellow owners to share your opinions and experiences on your ownership of this Pro model to date.. Thanks...

I’ve had mine about 6 months. Bought used from a forum member for a lot less than that! Have carried it some. Only shot it with .357’s. I don’t recommend
it! I carry with .38 +p.
Hope this helps,
Al

I carried a 640 non-Pro for a couple of years and have no complaints at all. It's a great little package.

I’ve been carrying mine in my pocket since June or so, it’s been perfect for me. I like the heft, and it disappears completely in my pocket.

I have had one since they first came out and it is my most often carried off duty gun. Can't think of a single reason not to get one. Wish I had two.

I recently posted in another thread that I just switched from carrying my 642 to the 640 pro. It's heavier so the recoil is much more manageable, the sights are much nicer than the fixed groove, and the trigger is smoother. If the gun you seen was brand new never fired the price seems fair but if it's pre owned, it's a bit over priced in my opinion. I'd say used in good condition it should be around 625-650 otd. More I suppose if you really want it. They aren't that common in my area. I got lucky and paid 600 otd but I would have been willing to pay up to 650. Moon clips are a nice touch also, but I'd suggest getting a moon clip tool so you don't bend them.

I'd much rather have a regular 640, than the pro.

If I read you correctly, you are seriously asking us why NOT buy a S&W!On this forum!
May I respectfully say that you are at the wrong forum for such a question. If you want an honest answer,go to the''wifes of multiple S&W gun owners'' site. They'll give you reasons why not to buy another Smith.
But I'd rather warn you beforehand;going to this forum is at your own risks since it has been known to be infested with incurable viruses. And the cure for these viruses is way more expensive than just buying another S&W!Guess you got your answer!

Personally I can't see carrying a snubby up-close-and-nasty gun with .357 Magnum ammo--that control and faster second shot thing. Better sights don't concern me for a gun likely to be used at no more than ten yards, and probably a lot less. By far the most likely use of a snub revolver or mini-autoloader is a quick point-and-shoot situation.
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy the 640 Pro if you like it and think you need it. I'm just saying I wouldn't. If I didn't already have and carry a plain-Jane .38 Special 640, I would look for one. All the Centennial series are great little pocket guns. I just prefer one that's all steel and don't need one in .357..

As long as the weight won't be a problem. I think it's a great piece. I have an older 640, a bit heavy for pocket carry or ankle work, but I like everything else about it.
I love the sights on the new pro, and the fluted barrel is sexy. I have been looking myself. You DO have the 642 already for pocket carry. Soooo, yeah, why not?

I love mine for all the above reasons and it has no IL. For me it looks and feels more like an old school Smith; I also like the flexibility of carrying .38s or magnums. I actually carry 4 +Ps and a magnum for the last shot.

I won't try to convince anyone they should or shouldn't buy or carry a particular gun.
I carry a 640 Pro in the woods for all those things in the forest that have eyes (with apologies to Bev Doolittle). It's exactly a half pound heavier than my M&P 340 loaded with the same magnum ammo. I don't notice the weight, but I sure notice the steel gun's enhanced shoot-ability, especially with the Karl Nill Centennial grips (feels like a K-frame).
My two bits.

I have an original 640, bought it in the early-mid 90s. IIRC, it was the earliest of the J-frame 357s and something of a novelty at the time. I also bought a 640 Pro a few years back. Both are fine revolvers, but I like the Pro a bit better, mainly because of the improved sights. The sights, the barrel flutes, and the fact that the Pro cylinder is cut for moon clips, are the differences between the two. The flutes are mostly cosmetic, you either like the look or don't. The option of using clips is not a bad thing, but not a big deal to me. The sights are what sells it in my opinion.

Thanks for all the responses, I am VERY close to pulling the trigger on this gun thats why I wanted some input on one. Trying to decide if I want this Pro model or a K6 Kimber. The Pro fits everything I have like holsters, speed loaders etc. Had a K6 a year ago and sold it and that gun was a very nice revolver. Decisions, decision...

I have a 640 Pro and love the sights and Fluted barrel. I have looked at the K6 a couple of times but there is just something about the way it looks that always turns me away. I'm sure the K6 is a fine gun, I just prefer Smiths when it comes to revolvers.

I'd say don't get the 640 Pro if the 642 is:
1) Already serving you well, which you say it is (there just isn't that huge a difference between them carry and performance-wise), and
2) These aren't primary personal defense firearms for you, which you say they aren't.
For something the size and weight of the 640 Pro, I'd go with the K6S: extra round; better trigger; size-wise just as concealable but a little more shootable.
Speaking of triggers, if the 640 Pro you looked at has a better trigger than your 642, it's random -- they're identical inside and the Pro gets no more shop time than the 642.

The 640 Pro is a fine little gun. I like the sights, they're a great improvement and make this a dandy range gun - you can actually aim it. Carrying it is a bit more of a bother than an airweight J-frame, but the extra weight makes firing magnum rounds a reasonable proposition. I find Speer Gold Dot short-barrel .357s to be very manageable.

I like mine a lot - especially with the 3 finger CT grips that, like the Cowboy said, feels and shoots like a K frame.

Because you will never use your 642 ever again
Because you dont have a M60 66 or 686
Because you wont have 2
Because it makes all the plastic guns in the safe look like ****

If you don't mind spending the extra money on the 640 Pro, go for it. I just picked up a PC642 that has a much better trigger than my earlier 642. The PC model also comes with moon clips, good shock absorbing grips, and some nice polished metal touches. It comes with a price tag of a bit less than $500. Check the trigger pull out for yourself. You might just find the PC to be more to your liking. If you're not concerned about weight and think you need .357 magnum capability, go for the 640 Pro. It sure wouldn't hurt to have both revolvers in your lineup. I've looked at it myself, but decided my 66 snubby filled that role.

I also have 2 Kimber K6Ss. One is a 2" and the other a 3". I like them both and the fact that they hold 6 rather than 5, in a similar size/weight package, is a big plus. But I have to say that I like the 640 Pro a little better, if I had to give up two I'd keep the Pro.

I have both a 640 and the 640Pro. I prefer the Pro version hands down primarily due to the sights and I like the fluted barrel.

I would like to have one but the one I found had a canted barrel. Check the workmanship. If it looks right buy it.
Although I'm very happy with my S&W M&P 340 which I added the S&W crimson trace grips too. It's ALWAYS in a pocket even when I carry my S&W 21-4.

I really really like the looks of this gun, how do you like those laser grips on it as I have never saw those before. They make the gun just look right!
You have anymore pics of this setup handy? Would like to see other angles of it.. Thanks

Those grips are sweet on my 649-3 and come in red or green laser. I chose green and don't regret it. VERY comfortable. I wanted a 640Pro and had one on order locally for 2 years about 4 years ago, finally gave up. Not buying a new Smith Revolver without seeing it. There ya go, $.02 worth!

They are LG350's from Crimson Trace. Green laser, very nice reduction in felt recoil, fill the hand making the gun easy to control. Not great at reducing the overall size of the gun. Pricey, but if you are a NRA certified RSO or Instructor, a copy of your credentials will get you a substantial discount.

I don't think you can go wrong with any version of the 640. I think one could argue that the 640 is the cream of the crop for a carry J frame. Although the airweights might be better for pocket carry.
If you have money for the extra's the Pro gives you, more power to you.
I carry a 442 and would really like a steel J frame some day.

Where did you get those stocks? I like them. And I don't think I've seen them on the smith and wesson website.

Well I went back today and they still had the 640 PRO in the back that I played with last week that started this thread. And of course after much deliberating with myself, I caved and got the gun. The trigger was just really smooth for me not to take it home. Plus the extras that you get with this gun like, all stainless, no lock, night sights, moon clips, fluted barrel, 357 capability and more i just could not pass it up. Plus, I talked them down to $700.00 plus tax which with tax brought it right back up to $749.00 OTD but I am happy... I would have paid the same amount if I ordered off the web but would not have been able to play with it and see what the trigger felt like and how it was built prior to shipping to my FFL. Thanks to everyone that "helped" me decide, the pics of yours did it and some of you had good points as to why the gun is a superb J frame..
Now, I am looking at altamont grips for it I think ... Here she is....

Congratulations! I bought my 640 Pro a few months ago. I don't think the trigger pull is any better than my old 642, but the 640 Pro is much more pleasant to shoot. I'm not particularly averse to recoil, especially on small guns, but I find even full house .357 loads are tolerable in the 640.

thanks hyena, now I am trying to decide on what altamont grips to get for my pro and 642. gonna cost me over 100 bucks for 2 pair of them.
Do any of you know if the altamont grips come with a speed loader cut already in the left side or do you have to specify this when you order them? Thanks...

What is nice about having the airweight and an all steel version is the ability to put in a lot of range time shooting a short barreled revolver.

Here's the progression I went through (I've never pulled the trigger on any J-frame with those out-of-the-box rubbers).
The Altamonts were comfortable, but the Karl Nill grips make them obsolete. Can't say about the speed loader access with the Altamonts, but they do allow for moon clips on the 640 Pro.
Enjoy your Pro!

I bought and sold mine. I use a 649-3 instead. A 640 in 357, if you want the extra power, can be had without pro package too. Used anyway. I prefer the original design. Just my preference. I like the original combat style rear sight. Note that for a lot less money you can have a trigger job done on any revolver by a gunsmith or yourself if you have the skill. I bought a 640-3 with a magnaport and trigger job already done to it for $400 2 years ago. I think that was a much better deal. Again JMO
Here is a pic with the magna port and added grips.
