Default S&W M 686-1

I just purchased a S&W Model 686-1 and I am a bit confused. The serial number AWU 6437 dates the revolver to 1987 which makes sense. However the gun has a 2.5 inch barrel, which according to my copy of SC of S&W, was not introduced until 1990 during the dash 3 production. The gun was an Internet purchase and hasn't arrived yet. Perhaps the gun was re-barreled at some point? The original box is long gone so that won't be of help. Any ideas ?
Please excuse the lousy picture-it is the only one the seller took. Unless I am mistaken the combat grips are round butt--

It may not have been catalogued until 1990, but many were made prior to that year. A significant number of them were built for Lew Horton in the mid-80's, but they were no dash models. Others were probably made, but without my SCSW in front of me, I can't confirm that they were.

Yes, that's a possibility.
It could also be that the factory had some surplus dash 1 frames to use up I suppose.

104231 2-1⁄2" S RB CT RR 1987 01 37.5 oz -2001 retail $ 590

Supica, Jim; Nahas, Richard. Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson) (Kindle Locations 11113-11114). F+W Media. Kindle Edition.

From my SCSW reference, product code 104231 was from 1987; but do wait until the revolver is actually in-hand to determine if there are any typo-errors in serial and dash numbers.

I may be crazy, but those stocks look longer than the ones that came on my 686 RB, 2 1/2".

Believe that the short barrel makes them look odd.

Thanks L-2, I'm guessing my gun is from that batch- 104231 --but without the original box with end label I won't have definite proof.

The combat grips look odd to me as well, however I think the picture is a bit distorted.

I'm sticking with non-factory stocks. They are too long.
