Default N frame square butt Hogue style S&W rubber grips

A short time back someone asked about the described grips. After some thought, I realized that about the time that Smith began making all their guns round butt, that they also began shipping guns with the Hogue style rubber grips with S&W medallions molded into the grips and without the right side "ear" on the grips. Now I do not really like the ear on Hogue rubber grips, so I have been looking for the S&W square butt grips.

Smith does not advertise N frame square rubber grips on their website..

It occurs to me that it is possible Smith never had Hogue make N frame square butt rubber grips with no ear and the logo molded in.

Has anyone ever seen any?

I'm not knowledgeable about the Hogue rubber grips you are asking about, but there is some additional information on the subject in this thread:

Edited to add that in the linked thread, it looks like all the guns mentioned with Hogue rubber grips w/medallions have round butt frames.

I didn't think they did either til I brought home this 8 3/8" 29-6. I already had the 6" dash 6 with the round butt so was surprised when I realized I had a square butt gun. Must be a transitional gun because it also has the forged trigger, hammer and cylinder release. Since then I have seen one on ebay so they are out there. Happy hunting!

The factory N frame square butt S&W logo Hogue grips were standard on the early 629-4 and 29-6. I have 3 guns with these from the factory and was able to snag 2 other sets of grips off eBay. They definitely are not made anymore, you have to find them used.

My recently aquired 29-6 is a square butt and had a set of those "earless" Hogues. I added the Culinas.

Thanks for the replies folks. At least I now know they were made, at least some. I have been digging in old grip boxes for years looking for some, just never ran across them.

Sure would like to find some.

The round to square version is much more common.
I've been looking (unsuccessfully) for a set of the square butt version myself.

They also made a round to square version that was almost smooth with much less pronounced finger grooves too. I'd REALLY like to find a square butt set like that - though I'm not even sure such a thing exists.

The 629-3 I bought brand new many years ago {the bottom one} is a square butt. These Hogues came on it. They are cut out on the other side for speed loaders and for the cylinder release . When S&W transitioned to the round butt on late dash 3's they also added the silver insert emblem

Yeah, my 28-3 Classic Hunter wears the same rubber.
The uncommon version doesn't have the big flap of rubber covering up half of the S&W cartouche on the right side. They are cut the same on both sides. Those are the ones I want.

There is no S&W cartouche on the side opposite the latch on my 629-3 The S&W cartouche is on the latch/cut out side.

The 629 classic hunter models(non fluted, square butt, old style rear sight assy, six inch. full lug barrel) came with the standard Hogue suare butt rubber finger groove grips and they do not have Smith Wesson emblems molded in. The same grip is sold today. When the "classic" series of the 629 and 29 was introduced they were all round butt revolvers and came with the Hogue round to square conversion grip with silver medallions and cut outs on both sides. The standardr 29-5 and 629-3 revolvers at the time were still coming with the checkered wood target grips. Early in the production of 629-4 and 29-6 revolvers the standard models with square butts came with the grips in question. Round butt models during the 29-6 and 629-4 time period were switched to the hogue rubber round to square conversion finger groove without the silver medallions.

Yeah, I can see that in the photos you posted.

I was talking about my 29-3 Classic Hunter having the cartouche on the right side. As you can see in the photo I posted, it isn't on the latch side like yours. It is in the more traditional location on the other side - where the flap of the stock Hogue grips covers about half of it. Sorry I didn't have a photo of that side to post - that would have made it more clear what I was talking about.

I lost an argument on here several years ago with regard to those Hogue MonoGrips. I reasoned that since my 686-3 Classic Hunter came (to me) with checkered target stocks and its box label lists "TS," the code for target stocks per the SCoSW, as the stock type, all such guns came with checkered target stocks. After all, I reasoned, why would S&W use an aftermarket grip that obscured their logo?

But once again, it was proven that you just cannot use reasoning with some of S&W's decisions. Numerous other owners of the same gun posted photos of their guns purchased new with the Hogue MonoGrip on them as well as box labels listing "TS" as the stock style.

I put nicer-figured checkered target stocks on mine and am happy.

Yeah, I thought the same thing - until someone posted a picture of a magazine (Rifleman maybe?) where they were introducing the 29-3 Classic Hunter and it had those ugly Hogues on it. So I left them on mine.

Don't get me wrong, they are GREAT for shooting - just ugly to look at.

Default Square butt N frame Hogues with double cutout and S&W logo

A few years ago I was out of town on an overnight business trip and stopped in a local sporting goods store. I asked the clerk if they had a box of grips I could dig through. Among the miscellaneous sets I found a bunch of the grips in question. I bought one grip and was happily on my way. It wasn't until I returned home that I started thinking about how hard they are to come by, and that I probably should have gotten all of them, even though (at the time) I didn't have enough hardware to put them on. I knew I had to return to the store if I had the opportunity.

Fast forward two years, and once again I'm in town on business. The store was still there, but certainly the grips would be long gone by now, I'm thinking. I asked a clerk about the box anyway, and after a few minutes of rummaging around he returned with it (very dusty) and placed it on the counter.

By the looks of it I was probably the first person to have peered inside since my first visit. I pulled one out to ask the cost, and after checking with the boss he gave me a price that let me buy all 8 dusty sets with a very big smile on my face. Definitely the highlight of my trip!
