Default 686-5 7-Inch, 7-Shot

I ran across an interesting pre lock 686 at a small gunshow Sunday; a 686-5 SEVEN Inch, Plus Model. Seller said it was one of 130 or so on a special run and I thought I had read something about that as well but can't find any info. Can someone enlighten me?

I vaguely recall that gun, and the 5-inch model (non-full lug barrel), but I’m afraid I can’t tell you a thing about them. I’ll be watching to see what others know. Someone will come along...

I have one although it is a conversion. I purchased a 7” barrel from a member here who had removed it and replaced with a 4” I think. It was supposed to have come off a Performance Center or some special run. Not sure what dash it came off. Stamping are different from any other 686 I have seen. I had it installed on a dash 1 that was originally a 6” and never was a great shooter. Not sure if it’s a better quality barrel or not, but now the gun is a real tack driver. I did a bunch of load testing this weekend with hunting loads and the velocity of the 7” and my 8 3/8” is almost identical. Maybe 25-30 FPS difference in loads in the 1200fps range.Cylinder gaps are both .004 so not sure why not much difference in velocity but not a big deal to me. Gave $100 for barrel and $60 for the fitting. Turned a decent at best shooting gun to one that will be hunted with if we ever get some cooler weather.

Sorry, I don't have a picture of the label. Sold it to forum member Mikey357. Maybe he can chime in.

It's the product code 148718. Made in October of 1999. Known serial number prefixes include CDR. Has the look of what they called the "Stocking Dealer Special". It's a Performance Center product, and should be so marked.

This gun is not PC marked but I believe that may be the prefix, I'll have to check

My recollection was that it did not have PC markings or label. Action did not seem to be PC tuned.

I had it in my notes that it was PC made. Could be wrong, and sometimes they will make a gun an not mark it but that is very uncommon. They want the acknowledgment, and the ability to charge more, when they do the work.

Mine is in fact a CDR prefix.

I DON''T KNOW. BUT IF IT WASN'T CRAZY MONEY, I WOULD HAVE GRABBED IT.......

I NEVER BUY THE STORY, JUST THE GUN. IN THIS INSTANCE, I AM A HUGE M686 FAN WHO HAS NEVER READ OF, HEARD OF, NOR SEEN A 7" M686+ BEFORE---AND A PRE LOCK TO BOOT ! ! !

MY PURCHASE WOULD HAVE BEEN FOLLOWED BY AN IMMEDIATE REQUEST TO PROFESSOR JINX, FOR A LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY...
