Last week I had a choice of a model 10-10 38 spl with typical holster wear and dings and a 10-14 38spl+P with IL and much better cosmetically for the same price. I chose the 10-10 because it was pre lock and floating firing pin on hammer. The 10-10 shoots very accurately but I found it had too much end shake and needs shimming. I'd been second guessing myself about my choice so I went back yesterday and got the 10-14 which was a much tighter gun. They both came with the service holsters and two speed loaders w/belt pouch. I figured at some point these LE trade ins will dry up. Haven't shot the 10-14 yet.

What part of the country are you located in?

Police trade ins of revolvers showing up in 2018 sounds to me like an amazing find, especially two (or more????) with duty holsters, etc.

Are there other agencies left that would have traded in revolvers this late?

I thought most all Law Enforcement gravitated to semi autos for sure by the late 1980's, mid 1990's or have these specimens been sitting at an LGS for 30 years?

Would love to see a pic of the duty holster and gear. Did you end up owning both Model 10's?

I have a Model 10-5 that is just simply a great shooter. Would love to come by an original duty style rig for toting this guy on his exercise outings.

Actually these are NY dept of corrections issued guns not police. There's quite a few out there now. A lot of them " rode hard and put away wet" as the saying goes but still fun to shoot. Yes I've got them both now. $330/ea. Now that model 10 of yours is a beautiful specimen and in a whole other league. Pic is of 10-10 with the gear. If I were you I wouldn't put that beautiful 10-5 with that perfect finish inside of this holster after seeing how they wear the blue.

I have a 10-11 from NYDOC, good mechanical state and a lot of blue wear. I suspect that they went into and out of a holster every day they were in service and shot maybe once a year.

I shot the new to me 10-14 at the range today and it performed flawlessly and very accurately. The vet who owns the range I go to said New York sold off @1200 of the model 10s. He also stated the state police get first crack at the new guns and often their old guns are passed down to dept of corrections. If this is true it might explain the wear on some of these guns.

A former NY resident and used to do some work at a trauma center they transported the prisoners to for care. The team of officers usually was one armed and one unarmed and the model 10 was the standard. Just a few years ago. They apparently were going to transition to the Glock 17’s handed down from the state police. Oddly New York has a law stating police weapons can not be surpluses out for civilian sale. Apparently DOCS does not fall under this law. Keeping my eye on some of these on auction- as a former New Yorker it would be cool to have

OP, it's beautiful. I'm glad it shot well for you. If the lock bothers you, you can always buy a plug for it. But even with it, it's a fine gun. I don't know if I ever heard of anyone with a model 10 have problems with their lock. But they do sometimes fail or accidentally engage. Supposedly on the the lighter guns.

Today I ordered a police trade in Model 10 from Bud's. They claim that it's functionally fine but the finish is "poor". Assuming that's true, the $229 plus shipping and transfer will be a steal for a decent shooting wheel gun that will easily consume +P ammo. The photo on the website looks like a gun that spent decades in a holster.

I picked up one of those 10-10 turn-ins about a year ago. It has a bit of holster wear but the action is tight. Bore is shiny bright. Really good shooter. The one downside was someone had used Loctite on the side plate screws. Took a good soaking of PB Blaster, a bit of heat with a solder gun then blast with canned air and finally got the screws out without bumming them up. The internals needed a good cleaning and I think (hope) I got all the Loctite off the screws.

I'd love to find a model 10-ANYTING in decent shape for $330 around here. I'd take it in a heartbeat and consider myself lucky. When you find one in my neck of the woods they are $75 or $100 more than that - withouth any of the extra gear.

There’s still some out there, but I’m afraid we’re about at the end.

Some French LE re-imports have hit the market lately.
