Default 3-inch N-frame Snubbies

I just picked up this nice 629-1 to go with my 624. The Magnum balances very differently than the Special with the heavy barrel and longer cylinder. It feels more front heavy in addition to being about 3 oz heavier. But I really like the RB Combats on it, so I might need to start looking for another set to go on the 624, which was missing it's originals when I bought it.

Those two belong in every revolver collection. Very nice find! I REALLY like mine.

Both terrific but I much prefer the heavy barrel, especially in a 3".

Beautiful!
Gotten old enough that it's difficult to handle many 44 mags so I got this puppy. A 686+ 3". Great carry piece. Almost looks like a 629 if you don't look too close.

I love mine. I have (3) OP, most recently a full under lugged Mountain Back Packer model with the Endurance Package so I can give my 3" Lew Horton Special M29 a break from the hot sauce plate popping 300 grain ammo I love to shoot! Nothing handgun wise has ever balanced like these babies do for me. The only gun that comes close is my 4" barreled M1911 Commander but the N frames edge it out quite a bit in carry and especially in the power thumping "Woods-Gun" department.

Mountain Back Packer.

Pic of my Lew Horton M29-3 and soon to be sold to my little brother M629-8 "Deluxe..."

The Deluxe is what got me introduced to the caliber and the craze of carrying these 3" babies. It was the most "Borrowed" handgun at a Farm-Shoot day I sponsored in Griffin Georgia back in March...

Now that I have the two .44s, I'm thinking I may need to start looking for .45s. Was there ever a 3-incher in 45 Colt in the pre-lock/MIM era?

I want to say yes as I'm 90% sure. But they sure are pricey these days and they are of the Mountain Gun version I believe. I looked for one in .45ACP to run .45Super's thru for over a year before I got a 4" M625 that S&W and Mr. Tim Sundles, (owner of Buffalo Bore), both fully affirmed to me that the M625 was fully approved/capable for the .45Super load!

I've always wanted to get into .45LC but now being so heavily invested .44Special/Mag it probably won't happen for costs reasons.

When a 3" isn't short enough you go with a 2"!

All kidding aside the 45 colt is going to be harder to find and more expensive. I watch gun broker everyday and a 3" N frame usually goes for over $1000 if not closer to $1300.

The 3" big bore guns are pretty much my thing. As far as pre-lock pre-mim, I don't think S&W produced any factory models. You are probably looking for a custom by John Jovino or Austin Behlert or one of their competition. Jovino's and Behlert's are very desirable, but sometimes difficult to verify unless signed and there are many "fakes" .

Should you be willing to consider pre-lock only, you do have options. Lew Horton had five separate limited runs in different S/N prefixes of the 625-7 in 45 Colt. Total production of these amounted to 555 units. There were at least 2 or 3 overrun guns that were not Lew Horton guns. Be advised, they are pricey, a LNIB example can easily go for $2000 and up to $3000, depending on bidding action.

Best regards, Bob.

I'd love to have revolver in 45LC, but that's pretty rich from my blood.

I emailed Lew Horton today and they confirmed that the 624 is a LH special from 1985, but the 629 is not one of theirs.

A 3" .44 N frame is pretty much the only gun where I know I will definitely be reaching for my credit card.

Have to agree with the OP about the balance of the .44 Special Combat Special vs. the Magnums... To me the 24 and 624 CSs were the best balanced of all the 3" Ns with round butts...

The only CS I have left is a 657...wish it had the slim barrel...

Bob

Bob
This is exactly why I sought out the 29-10 3” Lew Horton.
