S & W 940 9mm
Hoping that some of you S & W sages can help me out with this one. I am in the processing of helping a friend establish values for his guns for insurance purposes. My friend isn't really a gun guy so he asked for my help. I find an interest in all kinds of guns so I was happy to help.
He has a small brushed stainless finish Model 940 in 9mm with rubber grips. I has a 3 inch barrel and a totally enclosed hammer. In great condition. He doesn't know much about it as it was given to him by a family friend.
A couple of questions:
-Does it take moon clips?
-What's a fair insurance valuation?
I can find 2 inch models but not a 3.
What do you guys think?

The 940 3” should value not quite as much as a 2” but close for insurance. I’m thinking $600. Yes, it takes moon clips.

Yes,
it is intended to be used with full moon clips. About 90% of the ones manufactured will fire without clips, but they are a pain to extract and this is not a reliable way to use the firearm.

The 3" variation was not popular. Not many were manufactured and we seldom see them on the secondary market.
For the purposes of insurance, I would value it at $850. For the purposes of a sale, that number is too high
I love the 940s. I usually open up the chambers so that they can be shot with 38 Super.
I have owned seven or eight of them over the decades. I still have several sitting in the safe

I'll offer a bit of a different view.
I'd love to have a 3" to go with my 2", but I have never seen one. I'd value the 3" at $900 for insurance, and I don't think that would be unreasonable for a sale price, either.
Things that weren't popular and didn't sell well when they were in the catalog seem to garner more attention and money in today's collector realm.

This is as close as I have gotten to owning a 3"
Every time I think about doing a barrel swap I stop because I know I will not carry it in the 3" configuration

My experiences are the 3" was produced less and anything 3" that is no longer manufactured represents a higher value than the 2 or 4" models. I'd agree with the 800-900 suggestions.

Thank you everyone for all the feedback.
It does seem a little awkward for concealed carry.....kinda like it should be small enough, but you really can't find an adequate place to carry it.
Last question: Are the moonclips model specific or will any type/style work?
Thanks again.

There is only one model of Smith and Wesson J-frame 9MM that used moon clips that has been produced so far, the 940
So there are no other styles or types to choose from
The only Model 940 variation besides barrel length is the PC 940 Special which was chambered for 356TSW as opposed to 9MM Parabellum, but the PC 940 Special still uses the same moon clips as the standard 940

The SCSW4 shows the values as NIB=950, Exc=800, VG=600. I imagine most of the available ones will be in the Exc category. There seems to be a cult following on these, and often bring above these values. I have a no dash, 2", and it wouldn't leave me for less than 850+.
