Default 686-4

Stopped by my LGS after lunch today. They have a 686-4, 7 shot, 4" barrel. Gun Locke's up tight and not marks anywhere on the gun. It is a round butt with rubber grips. They are asking $675.00 which seems a little high to me. I will likely go back Monday morning and possibly make them an offer. What say the experts, what's it worth?

Just got a 686-1 this morning. Clean gun. They were asking $660, I got it for $500.
Remind them a brand new one is only $700

686-4 seven shot for $675, that's not a bad price for that gun. I would bring 6 $100 bills, see if he goes for it. Add a little cash as needed. If he's firm on the price see if it is an out the door price. That's a nice pre lock, pre MIM revolver. I would be all over it at that price around my neck of the woods. Good Luck

Myself, I don't find attraction in the added extra shot but without a doubt, people and the market DOES. This one, being 7-shot and pre-lock makes it a real humdinger for a lot of folks.

If it's in top condition or near, then yes, it is worth exactly what they are asking. If you really like the 7-shot version of the 686, you'd be crazy to let this one slip by.

The 7 shot does not excite me. I would really prefer a 6 shot, but it does not make or break the deal. When I was there today, it was within 30 minutes of closing time. I will be there on Monday morning when they open to see what deal I can get.

The 7 shot dash 4 gets a lot of people excited. I would buy it

Many claim -4 is the best version.
I'd prefer it be a 3-inch but ..... 686, -4 and pre-lock ..... sure has a lot going for it. How many have you seen for sale?

THAT -4 IS THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER ITERATION OF THE M686---EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED, AND NOTHING THAT YOU DONT---ESP THE IL. THE FACT THAT IT'S A 4" PLUS MODEL 7 SHOT, MAKES IT A GRAIL GUN FOR MANY, INCLUDING MYSELF......

I WOULD HAVE JUMPED ON IT FOR THE ASKING PRICE, AS SOON AS I SAW IT, (OF COURSE AFTER ASKING THE LGS, IF HE COULD DO ANY BETTER). I WILL BE SURPRISED IF ITS STILL THERE FOR SALE, WHEN YOU GET BACK---UNLESS ITS A SHOP THAT GETS LITTLE FOOT TRAFFIC.....

DON'T BE INFLUENCED BY THE UNUSUALLY GREAT DEAL THAT Ribwizzard PAID FOR HIS REVOLVER, OR WHAT A NEW ONE COSTS. HE IS COMPARING APPLES AND ORANGES.....

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO HIM, NEITHER HIS GUN, NOR A NEW ONE, HAS THE CULT LIKE FOLLOWING THAT A 4", M686+ DASH-4 ENJOYS.....

Getting a 7-shot VS 6-shot 686. To me it was a choice between just how many KINDs of speed-loaders does one want? I have five handguns and that requires that I have four different speed-loaders. I bought my most recent 686 WITH a 6-shot cylinder.

Why? Part of that decision was based on my choice NOT to have to add ANOTHER type of speed-loader to the mix. Plus, that and I already have another 686 6-shot.

At least all of my handguns have either .38 Special or .357 Magnum capability. Something else to consider when developing your "collection"...

FWIW, there are plenty of 7-shot .38/.357 choices out there, so don't think that I am dissing them. I'm not. It is just IMO, that can-be/is more difficult keeping so many types of speed-loaders separate, particularly when CC.

I just bought a new 686 4" for $615,,, but if the gun you describe had been laying there at that price I would have bought it in a heartbeat. I have a 686-4 in 6", and it would have been a perfect match.

Where in Michigan? If you don't buy it, I will. PM me the store if you don't take.

Went back this morning just 15 minutes after they opened the doors. Gun was still there. Ask to look at it again. Now it is mine for $600.00 plus Michigan 6% sales tax for a total of $636.00. No box or papers, but this gun looks like new. Will try to get to the range tomorrow to see how it shoots.
By the way, yesterday was my 73rd. birthday. Happy birthday to me!

Happy Birthday! October, November, and December are the best months of the year for sure! You did good, especially if that 7 shot is an "N-Frame" and I think it is... and a round butt too, yeah, I would have bought that and I'm not even into .357's that much, (only caliber I cannot shoot well after 20 years of trying). I would shoot hot .38Specials out of it forever though. I like the idea of 7 shots btw...

Sorry, but the 686 is an L-frame, not an N-frame.

To the OP, you got a great buy, on a great revolver!

The -4 series 686's are my personal favorites, and I would have picked that up in a New York second!

Congrats!
