Default My Bargain Bodyguard

I just picked up a model 638-3 at the LGS today. It had no box or papers and was cosmetically challenged. I was not looking for another J-frame .38 but I just could not walk away for $199 +tax. I figured how could I go wrong. It is a DCR serial prefix which puts it in 2008 according to SCSW. It appears that something was splashed on it that left little tiny streaks in the clear coat of the alloy frame. The bore and chambers are perfect and lockup is tight. The stocks appear to be the factory original Uncle Mike's boot grips. It shoots great and cleaned up fairly well. I don't think it looks too bad for a $199 J-frame! I'm very happy with it. It's also a great companion to my black finished model 438 no dash. I'm now the proud owner of salt and pepper bodyguards!

638-3 top, 438 bottom

I think that revolver would make a great carry gun. I like the Bodyguards a lot. Also you won't be shedding great big alligator tears if something happens to it.

The "Streaks" might be the clear coat finish pealing off

^^^^what he said. The finish on that 638 looks like that on my 342 after I used GunScrubber to flush out the insides. The finish simply peeled off. This was the only gun of mine this happened to.

Funny I was in Targetmaster Thursday looking at that gun. I’m glad it found a home.

I don't even want a Bodyguard and I'd have given $200 for that. Those deals seem to be finally be drying up here and prices on revolvers start around $300 no matter what condition.

I really want a bodyguard. I'd prefer a steel one though. But that is really nice and a great deal. You can't even tell the finish issues in the pics. To me, finish is like the least important thing. You get extra points for the older Uncle Mikes stocks that you can't get any longer. Hey, can you tell me if they're any wider at the bottom than the newer rubber ones like you have on the 438?

ABPOS,

I have a model 642 in similar but worse cosmetic condition that I bought from an LGS who had taken it in on trade. Bought it for similar money as you paid for this one. I wasn't in the market for a 642. But I could see so many ways that it might come in handy, and I was right! Took me about an hour before the store owner and I came to terms. Not only has my 642 been dead reliable, I kind of like the way it looks. Don't have to worry about scratching it. I carry it quite a lot and have it along with me a lot more often than I carry it! Money well spent!

Thank you gentleman for the complements!

ABPOS,

You are correct. The Uncle Mike's are a little bit wider at the bottom. Thanks for the info. I didn't know you cant get those any more.

So how long does your arm have to be in the cast? Lol

I know I would have broke my arm trying to get my wallet out.

Nice score

BTW I had a 638 that had some blems on the barrel & cylinder so I polished them and it turned out really well.
