Hello, i wanted to ask you guys some suggestions for a scope to mount on my 686-3 Competitor .
Leupold is way to expensive, i don’t have to do tournaments but only fun at the range, so something nice but affordable would be perfect.
(Simmons Prohunter is a little too long for my tastes, i would prefer that scope won’t be longer then barrel.)

Optics planet has the 2x Nikon force advertised at below 200 bucks .I have had good luck with their products .

I put a 4X Simmons scope on a 6 inch Model 617. I know it's a cheap piece of glass but it works well and once dialed in holds zero with the low recoil of .22LR. It is big (an understatement) and best for shooting at the bench off a bag. I've had some 7 yard spray and pray shooters look at me like I'm some kind of idiot but I can show quarter size groups of 10 shots at 25 yards and they can't. I do think large scoped revolvers are their own kind of eccentric and funky cool much in the same way motorcycle sidecars and dirigibles are still cool despite being archaic (as a counterpoint, I do have a red dot on a Mark IV just to stay in touch with the 21st Century). A word of warning, once you put it on and get it dialed in it becomes sort of dedicated to staying on that gun. I do miss casual plinking with that 617 to point of now considering getting a second 617 in 4 inch strictly for off-hand use. Do you remember that children's book If You Give A Mouse A Cookie? Put an accessory like that on your 686 and suddenly you'll realize you now need another 686... ��

Hahaha , i agree with all, i have seen the simmons, but i really wanted something a bit smaller than that !

The Burris Fast Fire 3 is small, lightweight and fairly inexpensive. If the sun is directly in front of or behind the scope, it can sometimes wash out the dot. This is true with all similar red dots. A tube scope doesn't have that problem. If only shooing indoors it's not a problem, either.

It kind of depends on what you are going to use it for. If not for competition, or hunting, you can get by with a little less expensive scope. The old rule of thumb for scopes was spend as much for the scope as for the gun it is going on.

Nikon makes some solid less expensive scopes and Vortex does also. Unless you are going to shoot 100 yards or more frequently I wouldn't go past 4X. The problem with cheaper scopes, (like Simmons), is reliability of holding zero on more heavily recoiling handguns. On a 22RF just about anything will do, but on a .357, you would want better glass.

Remember sometimes what you save on the scope you waste on ammo trying to chase a scope that isn't holding for you. I've been there. You think you're losing your mind but it's a slight movement internally and you're chasing a cheap scope. Leupold cost more but have a great warranty and made in the USA. You can usually buy used perfectly fine Leupolds all over. I have a Vortex Venom on a 9mm revolver. It is my first and I like it, so I'd recommend that too. They all take getting used to but worth the fun. Good luck and enjoy.

If you consider a dot reflex sight vs. a tube scope I suggest you take a look at the Nikon P-tactical Spur. I have one on my 686 and really like its features and price point at $200 or a tad less.

I definitely do not like Simmons scopes. The one I had would not hold adjustments. I did buy a Leupold M8 2x handgun scope for my Ruger Redhawk 44 mag. It is excellent! And, I found it on Gunbroker for $140 in as new condition.

I like red dot tube type. Had good luck with Simmons and Bushnell Trophy. This is a 7” m686 with a Simmons. I bought several on sale for around $50 IIRC. Has 11 different brightness settings and 5 different MOA Sizes. Been surprised at how well they have held up. I’ve probably shot over 1k full house rounds through each of mine with zero problems so far.

My vote is for the C-More Railway. It's about $250. The dot stays bright and doesn't wash out in bright sunlight. I have one on each of my guns and use them for Steel Challenge Matches.

I have at least a half dozen of the Simmons tube type Red Dot sights on several different revolvers. After I lost the vision in my right eye, a friend suggested I try a Red Dot for general use. It was a GREAT suggestion.

I talked to the Simmons Techies at the NRA Convention and they told me that up to and including the .44 Magnum, NO problems. That is their recoil limit, however.

My deer hunting revolvers (a Model 29 with 8 3/8" barrel and a Ruger Red Hawk with 7.5" barrel) have a Leupold two power on the Smith and a Burris 2 power on the Ruger. I have been more than satisfied with their performance.

However, if buying today, I would probably opt for the Red Dot tube style. When I went from right eye, right handed, to left eye right handed, I was up to speed in just two range sessions. These days (I am too old and feeble to drag a deer out of the woods) I shoot only one the range. The Red Dot shines!

I have a Nikon 2x EER on my 629. It's an older scope, not even sure if they offer the same model anymore. BUT,it has held up well to a steady diet of 44 mag factory loads with no issue. They make a current one that goes for right around $200. I have always felt that with scopes you get what you pay for. I can't afford a high end scope, but middle of the road from a good maker has always suited me well. I have Nikons on 3 of my guns and have had good luck.

I've got one on my TRR8...love it. They do come with a hood for bright light days though I've never needed it. I much prefer the 3 moa dot over the 8..

I LIKE THE ULTRA DOT, 30MM MATCH DOT SIGHT. IT SHOULD FIT YOUR GUN PRETTY WELL, BUT YOU CAN CHECK ITS DIMENSIONS ON THEIR WEBSITE.....

I FIND THE RED DOT SIGHTS MORE VERSATILE AND PRACTICAL THAN TELESCOPIC, HANDGUN OPTICS.......

I OWN TWO 8 3/8" REVOLVERS, A M617 AND A M686. BOTH OF THEM CARRY THE 30MM MATCH DOT. EACH OF THEM SHOOTS LIKE A RIFLE ! ! !

Thanks all for the suggestions, i think i will give a shot to a red sod, i really like the shape of bushnell trophy and ultradot, do you have other models of that kind to suggest me? unfortunately they are not bein sold in italy, so i’ll try to find something else ��

The Ultradot is one of the best red dots for the money. I have an Ultradot II on one of my guns. They are high quality for a reasonable price. For a crosshair handgun scope, I have found Burris to be very dependable on heavy recoil guns.

I just bought a Nikon Spur red dot sight. I can't wait to get it on my .44 Desert Eagle. I chose the Spur for the long battery life, ability to change the battery without removing the optic and the Trucolor coating. I plan to pick up a SuperDot for my shotgun for 2019's Spring Gobbler season. Even though I do freelance work with Nikon I still buy the optic I think will work best for my needs, the Spur fit's right into that list. As soon as I saw one at SHOT Show 2018 I knew I wanted one.

Nikon still has a 2X extended eye relief handgun scope, it is called the FORCE XR 2x20 with Nikoplex reticle. I have been using the 2.5-8x20 FORCE XR handgun scopes for years because of the BDC reticle which can be dialed in using Spot On. I have taken deer past 200 yards using mine, though I much prefer using my .44 mag inside 150 yards to my .308 T/C.

Guys i just found a Bushnell Trophy 1x28 red dot with 6 M.O.A at a good price, what do you think of it ?
I also found a Bushnell 1x28 multi dot (4 kinds) , which one you would suggest?
