what i wouldn't do to sit down with this legend over a couple glasses of whiskey... i watch his channel ALL the time. he is one of the reasons i started my love of S&W revolvers, and cemented it in 99 with his 12 rounds, with reload, in 3 seconds.

How did you post that at 357 AM about a 357? I would buy a lotto ticket. I have got to have a comp like Jerry was shooting. A 19 stronger than an L frame.

Danggit! I have been forcing myself not to look at one of those new 19s. I guess I may have to weaken and go see what they look like. Jerry’s a good salesman.

Those are both extremely nice firearms...so nice that they caught my attention in what I will call an "expensive" way...

Thanks for the video. Jerry shooting a new Model 19 .357 is one for the collection. Two of the best.

Being a HUGE Model 19 fan I enjoyed the video !

The flat spot at 6 O clock on the old K Magnum forcing cone was always its Achilles heal and the new 2 piece barrel apparently solves that problem,
While I prefer the older square butt and grooved tangs on the 4" gun those are not deal breaking issues.

Excellent review by Mr. Miculek. I agree, the design flaw in the original K-frame .357 Magnum was the flat milled into the bottom of the barrel extension for cylinder yoke clearance. As far as the Carry Comp goes, great for a competition revolver, but I do not anything redirecting hot gasses in any direction other than parallel with bore.

I fell for one a month or so ago. I've only had a chance to shoot it once, but it handled factory 357's with ease. They were Fiochi, 142 grain and seemed pretty warm to me, but I don't usually bother with 357 ammo, but wanted to try it at least once. Even I was able to hit the target with the combo.

And I think it looks pretty darn good.

The new forcing cone.

These two show the new front lock on the crane. The little silver ball is on a lug that fits into a "slot" for lack of a better word, milled into the yoke.

Another shot that might be better.

Anything that looks like wear is just reflection from the overhead light. The finish is flawless.

Yes, it's got the lock, but I don't worry about that a bit. The only place I shoot it is at the range, and those targets aren't prone to charges.

Slight variation, I'm breaking in a 66-8 short barrel. 125 gr TC cast bullets and 8 gr 231. 125 is a great bullet weight for a 357, and I can shoot it worry free.
Gun is really accurate (if I do my part) and, I can shoot this one in DA with quick followup shots. Make those steel plates sing!

Great post linking the video.

Dumb question:
Are the new model 19 cylinders actual K frame size or really more L frame?

I've never measured it, but mine fits into the same holsters that my other 19/66's fit into.

19-4

"New" 19-9

My model 69 "L-frame" wouldn't fit into the same holsters.

A while back, I measured my 19-3 and my 66-8 with a caliper -- no real difference I could see (other than bbl and barrel shroud width). Can't find the thread, or my notes. IIRC, I measured top strap width, frame window (both horiz & vertical) and cyl width.

FWIW,

Paul

Jerry M has too much fun when he is working! You know what they say, do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life! Sadly, that doesn't work for most of us. Not that I don't like what I do but it's not always fun!

Query - with the various modifications that S&W made how is this gun fairly termed a Model 19 Classic? It seems different enough that it almost deserves its own model number. Maybe I'm too cynical.....

I think it's just supposed to be "reminiscent" of the old model 19, not an exact remake. It's a K-frame, 357 revolver. That part is "classic."

I'm just glad that S&W has enough confidence in the "civilian" revolver market to bring out new models. They can't be counting on any military or police sales.

I've talked to Jerry and had dinner with him several times during the years he shot the Bianchi Cup match. He's a down to earth nice person. I have the greatest respect for him, he's the real deal.
I am not on that level, but simply by being at the match for one week a year, I have been fortunate to get to know many of the big name shooters. Anyone who goes to the match can do the same thing, not just me.

If it wasn't coming from Jerry, I would be very skeptical of the stronger than an L frame comment. I suspect that its due to the new front locking mechanism unless Smith isn't using one piece barrels on the L frame. His comments on MIM were interesting as well. But, Jerry has shot more and longer than I have, so I tend to belive him.

He does have me jonesing for a new 3" round butt, k frame with a front night sight.

I would disagree that the flat bottom barrel of the original K frame is a "flaw" although you could certainly argue that was it's weakest spot when considering the .357 cartridge. The original K frame was designed to shoot .38 special and did so exceedingly well for decades. It was later altered to accept .357 magnum with 158g bullets for law enforcement as a compromise for the weight of the N frame. It performed well in this role for many years. It was the introduction of the 125g bullet loaded to the top that arguably surpassed the design limit of the the old K frame.

Yes, you can find stories of failures in old K frames but considering how many are out there I'm not convinced it's significant. Most owners have been shooting them for years (myself included) with no issues when using the loads it was built for. This is JMHO but I feel compelled to defend my old favorites!

I do have to admit that all of my K frames are 3" or less so I usually shoot +P in them just to save myself. Plus I think the .357 is ballistically (is that a word?) wasted in snubbies. When I want to shoot .357's I use an L frame 4" or better.

Just my take and YMMV.

OP, I thank you for this post. I have a 66-8. It has hands down become my favorite S&W revolver and sees regular use as a range, trail and nightstand gun. The K-Frames fit my hands perfectly and better (to me) than a 4" 686 L frame. There is a noticeable difference in size, weight and balance. Since the new Model 19 classic came out this year I've been on the fence about getting one to keep the M66 company as I love blued guns and K frames. This video just put me over the edge. There are two in stock at the LGS. I plan on checking them out this weekend.

Yep, but that is due to the additional steel in the barrel shank.

Seems counter intuitive, just the same way it is counter intuitive that a 7 shot L Frame is stronger than a 6 shot L Frame. Of course, all else is equal, so the 7 shot is stronger due to the fact that the cylinder locking notches are offset in the 7 shot, instead of right over the top of the thinnest part of the cylinder in the 6 shot. Apparently, the first place an S&W will fail is to blow out the lock notch. I have that straight from Herb Belin, the engineer at S&W.

I don't disbelieve Jerry when he says the new K frame is stronger than the L frame. It might very well be--I don't know. However, I don't automatically believe it is true just because Jerry says it. He is sponsored by S&W -- he has skin in their game. The S&W corporate is surely aware that the old purists aren't yet sure about the two-piece barrels and the new front lock-up. S&W is surely savvy to the fact that many shooters will take Jerry's word as gospel and if he says the new style is better, then it must be better. This very thing is called marketing. Again, I'm not saying he is incorrect. I'm just saying I would rather hear it from an independent source not on S&W's payroll.

I am glad it has the lock. One can keep the revolver loaded on the nightstand and have the key nearby, perhaps on a car keys, ready for instant use, even in a household with children. Very nice feature.

I know my eyes are getting old but that two piece barrel on the new "K" frame 357...................

looks like it is a little bigger in diameter than the old one piece M19-5.
Looks like a .41 Cal. to me?

Still nice to have a light weight "K" frame that will shoot the big .357
until the cows come home, as Jerry stated.

As I said on another forum, I can't accept the new 19 being stronger than an L or N.

It may depend on what he refers to.
If strictly the forcing cone, possibly.
If the entire guns as a broad statement, I am not convinced.

As far as MIMs go, I talked to him about 'em for a few minutes at SHOT years ago.
He said one thing in their favor is the MIMs are easier to do an action job on.

My local smith is a revolver guy and has been reworking them for decades. He's a straight shooter and has no issue calling something out for what it is. He runs and works on new S&W and told me he has no issue with the newer internals.

If the action job he did on my 627 is testament, I'll tell you the thing is slicker than grease after his magic.

I see a brand new Mdl 19 sold for $505 on GB this morning. Betting that seller won't start another one at a penny. I thought about bidding but I already have a 19-3 4" that's got enough wear that I don't feel I have to baby it.

I must say, his shooting impresses the hell out of me. If I could shoot 1/10 as good as him, I can die a happy man.

Thanks for posting the video, was fun to watch.
