Default Fair Price, m29-5 classic?

I believe I have found a vgc m29-5, five inch barreled gun for sale. It has Hogue rubbers, full underlug, box and docs. It’s a blued gun with light colored etchings. I’m in Louisiana and the gun is being sold from the west coast. What’s a fair purchase price?
Would appreciate opinions, thanks

Need to know condition, Box, docs and what are they asking.

The 5" 29-5 classic is probably the high water mark in 29 evolution with the DX version being the highest grade, BTW the 29-5 Classic is the evolutionary equivalent to the 629-3 Classic, both have a rear site unit that is unique to that revision only.

The Hogue grips are original if they have nickel S&W medallions, the DX also came with finger groove combats IIRC.

A fair condition shooter likely around $750, LNIB perhaps more like $1200 IMO

Looks to be very good condition. One side of the barrel is marked, Smith & Wesson below that 44 Magnum and on the right side it reads 29 classic, no where do I see a DX “label”. It does have a black powder chamfer on the front of the cylinder.
Yes to box & docs, case colored hammer and trigger. I can’t tell if it’s a nickel logo in the grips.

The "DX" would be marked on the barrel if it was one.
There were two factory rubber Hogue stocks, your gun should have come with the nickel medallions, later versions just had the S&W logo pressed into the rubber on both sides, The ones sold aftermarket usually are taller on the right side and have the Hogue logo instead of S&W logos.

The blued 29-5 is interesting as they came from the factory with some sort of white paint in the rollstamps, actually not sure if the logos are roll stamped or laser cut.

The chamfered cylinder is a feature original to the Classic model.

If the guns finish is excellent condition with very low mileage I would become interested at or under the $1000 mark , $800 would be a bargain.

Engine49; I think you have identified the particular model, and your value estimates seem about right to me. As a seller his price is north of a grand. I spoke to him and all he would say was that he would consider offers. I told him when I had an offer I was comfortable with I’d send it. I might be able to do a thousand but needless to say I’d like to be under that. Thanks

I had the exact gun you are looking at. Very nice trigger pull and very accurate. Had no place to shoot 44 mag so I sold it. Hope you are able to get it, Larry

A $1000 offer is fair to both parties. Offer that, he'll entertain it almost certainly is he's motivated to sell. I wouldn't go north of that though. $800 isn't happening... unfortunately for you.

offer 750.00. Money talks, you know what walks. Guns like that are sold for less than 1000.00 all the time, just not on gunbroker or collector forums. Just at a show and a guy had a 629-4 for 800 that looked unused.i already have one so I did not make a offer. It’s worth what he can get for it and what you are willing to give. Play the game if he will.

For whatever it’s worth, I just picked up this exact model two weeks ago with correct grips and all the accessories in the box for $750. The gun is easily in excellent condition. I have a thread about it here somewhere. Make an offer and see if he bites. All he can say is no. $850-$900 would Not be an unreasonable offer.I was prepaired to pay that price if I had to.

I recently bought a 5" 29-6 Classic from a gun shop in Lafayette, LA for $825 out the door. It's in great condition, but didn't have the original box, tools or documents. It did come in a nice plastic case similar to what S&W uses for some of their guns. So I don't think you will get the gun you are looking at for less than that, seeing that it has the original box, tools and docs.

A few things to note: 5" model 29 Classics are much rarer than the 6 1/2" barrel guns, so expect to pay more. And the stock Hogue grips do have a silver metallic S&W emblem on them for the 29-5 and 629-3 Classics. My 29-6 came with the stock Hogue grips for it and instead of the silver metallic medallion it just has a cast in S&W logo on the grip. I also have a 6 1/2" barrel 629-3 Classic, which is the direct stainless steel counterpart to the 29-5 Classic and it came with the medallion Hogue grips on it when I bought it. Both pistols have since had the rubber grips replaced with Culina round to square conversion target "Coke Style" grips, as they feel better in hand and look better too.

If you are specifically searching for a five inch 29-5 Classic and this one is super clean I wouldnt walk away from a $1000 price tag....

That being said besides a booming stock market it seems anti gun pressure has relaxed in DC (for now) resulting in slow gun sales for the past 2 years.... this translates to slow sales = buyers market .

IMO if control of the House changes in the upcoming election and interest rates start to rise so will guns and ammo ....Winter is coming....Cash is King and Money talks....
Basicly a great time to buy guns and stock up on ammo.....IMO
