OK, you guys with the 340PD's what did you pay and does your have the IL? I ask because it seems an average NIB 340PD is 800.00. That is 500.00 more bucks than the 442 that I just bought... I am not against it, it just seems to me to be allot for a red sight, 4 ounces less and 357 capable which everyone tells me that they do not shoot the 357's in it due to the felt recoil. Am I missing something here, just wondering... I am not trying to be a jerk, just wondering if the extra expense is worth the ride???

Just bought a 442 Performance Center for $325 from Tanners in PA. Got the name from Gunbroker. Then I got a $30 gift card rebate from S&W. See my review of the pistol. I think another score is the 360J. On this, the frame is Aluminum/scandium alloy. The hammer pin is steel. It has a blast shield in the frame, replaceable front sight, 38 special. A improvement on the 442. I bought mine (360j) new couple years ago but they still available on GB. The 442 is tuned by the Performance Center and the trigger is significant lighter and smoother than the 442

Pretty sure grabagun has 442s for $319 right now. I picked up a no lock 442 for that price -$30 rebate this summer. The rebate was processed fast, which was nice.

WRT the OP: that's really up to you. If you think you'll ever want to shoot 357 out of a snubby, then that's your ticket. I find 38+p to be my upper limit for snappy recoil in a Jframe.

For me, the price difference was worth it. In my opinion, the one to buy is the M&P340. The sight picture allows me to get faster follow up shots, better accuracy, and a front night sight helps in low light conditions.

Both the 340PD and the M&P340 are available without the lock.

OK fellows, I have been looking at the 340 models (M&P and PD models) and there is really only about $100.00 difference in them if I buy a new one via prices on GB. Now that I have the 442, I still want a 340 model since I am really liking the darker color with picking up the sight quicker but the big dot would be even better for me on the M&P. I am trying to figure out which would be best. I really like the M&P model because it already comes with the front night sight and is really the same weight as a standard 442 meaning it would shoot basically the same as my standard gun. The PD model is lighter in weight and I would then have to put on a night sight to get it like the M&P which would cost me more money. I am leaning towards the M&P model with NO lock. I just cannot find one around my neck of the woods to try out or inspect. This gun buying thing is a sickness, I mean really. Places just done stock the really good stuff as I hate hate hate buying through the mail.... GRRRRRR

You can swap the front sight for a big dot or whatever on the 340. Its just a small pin holding it in. Easy peasy

I'd get the M&P 340 rather than the PD version.

And definitely no lock like you mentioned.

The extra weight isn't that much, and will actually make the gun handle better if you ever want to shoot 357 Magnum or even 38 Special +Ps.

The big advantage, IMO, is the steel cylinder. More durable than the Titanium used on the PD.

And the M&P is less money too.

As for finding one, you might try looking at Gallery of Guns.

In my area, last time I looked, they could provide one at any number of local NorCal gun shops, and at good prices. I don't know how long it would take to get my hands on it, but a buddy bought an LCR from them a while back and it came in a couple weeks.

IonBond stainless steel cylinder - if I'm not mistaken.

Bought mine from Bud's. No charge shipping.

I would probably opt for the 340 M&P in your case. I bought a couple when they first came out with no lock, but found I really disliked the big dot night sight. I also had some concerns(legitimate or not) about the durabilty of the two-piece barrel, since it seemed rather fragile and I've come across a few reports of the shrouds coming loose, but the sight was my biggest complaint. If they were to come out with a ramp sight version at a reasonable price, I might give them another look.

I think that sights, like holsters - & brunettes, are a bit of a personal preference thing. ;=)

I've had stainless ramps, red ramps, black ramps, painted, patridge, fixed, staked, soldered, dovetailed, & probably more that I can't remember at the moment. The XS "Standard Dot" pinned front / integral U notch rear system - on my M&P, was one of the main selling points for me. Still one of my all time favorites, too.

It's actually about the most naturally pointing handgun that I own.

That is true. But, only the M&P340 has the deeper, wider u-notch rear.
