Default Holster recommendation for 586

Hi all;

I'm looking for a decent holster for my 4" 586. I've got a pretty poor excuse for a holster and would like get something decent. I've owned the gun since I bought it new in '91 and I think it deserves a good holster. I usually carry it deer hunting along with my rifle. Aside from that, it goes to the range on very rare occasions.

I'd like something made of leather with belt loops and would prefer the trigger be fully covered as well as having a strap over the hammer. Black or dark brown would be preferred. Something in the $100 range +- a bit would be great.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Pictures if you have 'em would be even better.

I have a Bianchi Shadow II,Model 7,in black. It works strong side/crossdraw. It fits my Model 617/6(4") and Model 69(4.25").I an pleased with the fit and finish of this holster. One holster for two revolvers makes me happy.

New holsters are nice but there are so many wonderful vintage pre-loved holsters to be found if the styles work for you. Try ebay. What style of holster do you have in mind?

I own two holsters from Lobo Gun leather. The enhanced pancake for my 4 inch 65 and the Lobo combat classic for my 6 inch 27–2. both are very nice, but for what you want I would recommend the combat classic. My N frame feels lighter on my hip then the K, because of the way the combat classic is made, with two layers of leather. I just checked the website and the holster by itself is $112, add the thumb break for another $25. you don't need to add a smooth leather lining for the interior of the holster, because there are two layers of leather you already have a smooth lining. the only time I use the enhanced pancake now is when I want to conceal the 4 inch 65. If I am carrying the 65 in the field and don't care about concealment, I just use the bigger holster and the thumb break holds the gun in just fine. The cordovan brown color is nice and dark, like you want.

That gun deserves some Wright Leather Works (Signature Series) or Milt Sparks leather!

It sounds as if in the OP you're describing a Bianchi Model 111 Cyclone, which can be worn on other side.

Maybe Lobo can make a close copy in dark leather?

I carried a Model 686 and later, my Ruger GP-100, in a very nice used Bianchi Model 5BHL in black, on a Bianchi River Belt, lined.

But I like the covered trigger guard and ambidextrous aspect of Model 111. If you have a rifle on the right shoulder, a cross draw holster makes sense. The Euro military holsters for the Browning Hi-Power, P-38, etc., make sense in that arena and have a spare magazine pouch sewn on. I think the CZ-75B fits the WWII German Browning holster, and there are commercial repros.

But that's beyond what you asked.

Mitch Rosen 5JR. Available without (or with) thumb break. There is enough stiffness/retention for me on the model without the thumb break. I have one for a 3-Inch 686+ in the Full Detail line.

After purchasing several QUALITY leather holsters from custom manufactures, including several sets from Mitch Rosen - I will never again look at the ****** mass produced stuff again.

Mitch Rosen 5JR
Express Line $75
or
Full Detail $145

Speed Strip Holder (available in the Full Detail line only) $85

Mitch Rosen Full Detail Line

Mitch Rosen Express Line

Mitch Rosen Accessories - Magazine, Flashlight, & Speed Strip Carriers

I wear this with a QUALITY Leather 1.5-inch holster by Crossbreed. I can conceal this rig with a golf shirt, button shirt, or sportcoat.

I like your choice.....I'm a fan of the Bianchi 111 Cyclones. I've used that holster model for years for my N,L & K frame S&W's. At last count I think I have 5 of those holsters (bought most of them "used" off of eBay).

Last time I looked, Lobo's site said he/they don't copy. Certainly hope I remember correctly. And why copy, when you get can the original from Bianchi?

The Galco is your second choice, which is also a copy but better made than Bianchi's hecho en Mexico products.

If you're looking for a belt holster, the Lobo Combat Classic mentioned in post 4 sounds interesting. Or a Field Holster from R. Grizzle. However, since you'll be carrying a rifle, presumably slung over your strong-hand shoulder, you might consider a chest holster such as the Guide's Choice from Diamond D... or either of the aforementioned belt holsters in cross-draw configuration.

Does this holster have a single belt loop tunnel? How far from your body does the revolver grip hang compared with the pancake holster?

Yes, single belt loop tunnel. It is quite a bit farther away fom the body. Not sure, but a couple inches maybe. Then again, I wore it last Sunday while a buddy and I drove around scouting for deer, checking tracks in the muddy roads. I had the combat classic holder belted into my jeans , with the holster outside my pullover hunting pants. A hoodie sweatshirt covered the grips and most of the holster. But, the holster for a 6 inch gun did protrude down below the bottom of the sweatshirt unless I pulled it down something fierce

I called Lobo Gun Leather yesterday with a question about another holster and while I had Mark on the line, I asked him about the Combat Classic. He also pointed out their Tactical Sportsman, which I had never noticed before. It is similar to the Combat Classic, except that it places the gun at thigh level with a swiveled belt loop and leg straps so that the grip is much lower than a belt holster and follows the movement of your leg. I wonder if that might make it easier to draw a gun with a longer barrel. I have a 5" N-frame for which I currently have no holster, and though it isn't super long, I figure I'd have to raise my elbow up pretty high to draw it from a belt holster. Crossdraw would probably allow for an easier draw, too, but it would also take some getting used to, as I've never had one before.

A Galco holster for a six inch GP100... very well made... double stitching around the belt loops, enclosed trigger and strap locking down the hammer, pistol. Fits like a glove and draws easily. Less than 60bucks shipped, I'll buy another!

Just to close the loop here... I ordered a Bianchi 111 Cyclone from Optics Planet. Shipping was quick enough and I used the holster several times now. The fit was tight at first, but after a few days in the holster, my 586 is right at home. Here's a few pics...

If you haven't found what you were looking for by the time that you get this far take a look at simply rugged sourdough pancake holster.
