Which is your FAVORITE S&W revolver?
Of all the S&W revolvers that you own...or want to own...which one is your very best favorite?
And since I posed question, I'll be the first. I admit I am torn between my Model 15-4 (which is actually my wife's), Model 25-5, or Model 17-4. But when I'm required to choose one and only one, it has to come down to my...
S&W Model 19-3 "Combat Magnum" in 357 Magnum.
I shoot this revolver better than any handgun I have ever shot. It is a joy to shoot and so satisfying to see those tight groups in both single-action and especially in double-action.
Thanks for looking at my favorite S&W revolver.
God bless,
Birdgun

I really like my 586. I think it's nicer than a Python.

No way to pick just one. That would be like asking a man which one of his children is best....

Okay, Bosquebass, which one of your children is your favorite?
I was my mother's favorite. My brother was my dad's favorite.
Now, see how easy that was when you admit to yourself?
So which is your favorite S&W revolver?

Sure, only one. Image you know all that you know now, and for some reason you don't own a single S&W revolver. Which would be the first S&W you'd buy if your collection was available for sale?
Yah, you just got to get your head in the right frame of mind, colt_saa.
Fun, ain't it? Well maybe not...

The first one pictured below... Of all the handguns I own whether semi-auto or revolver it has to be the 3" barreled Lew Horton "N" frame in .44Mag. My 3" barreled Mountain Back Packer "N" frame has to be my close second. The are the most exhilarating handguns I've ever shot/owned and they carry/conceal very well on me. My wife likes them with .44Specials is a plus as well!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU, colt saa. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO SETTLE ON JUST ONE.....
I TRIED TO PICK SOMETHING THAT WOULD SATISFY MANY PURPOSES.....

Joe, I don't believe I've ever seen that 3" N-Frame of yours before. That is just lovely! The only thing I'd do is put a Tyler-T to go with those Stag's and would be proud/happy to run that as my "Woods & CCW" gun!

Well, OK since you backed me into a corner..
This 28-2 would be the last to go. But it's tough to choose

Not a fair question at all!
I would have to narrow it down to my L-frame 686’s (3” & 4”er’s) first.
Second would be my K-frame 64’s (2” & 4”er’s).
Third would be my J-frames (640/642).
If I had no choice but to only have one, it would likely have to be a 3” or 4” 686, and that would be an almost impossible choice, thank the Lord I don’t have to make it!

I asked the same question on another website. You see the responses over there also.
What is your favorite Smith and Wesson revolver? - AR15.COM
I agree that it's a really hard question to answer. I've not shot enough to make an informed decision. And the two I have are so opposite, one being a 6" K frame and the other being a J frame, that they are hard to pick one over the other.
I would have to pic as to what I THINK is the best Smith revolver and I'm going to go with a victory model.

rwt, I love my vintage revolvers, but at a gun show, I barely walked away from a 686 with a 3-inch barrel. Oh, it was nice!

There is a reason that Golfer's get to carry 14 clubs.
There's a reason we all don't own just one revolver......................
My favorite is not my most practical or the one shot the most...... but my favorite and carried the most is a 3" 66-4 with checkered Spegel Boot Grips......
The most practical and IMHO the best utility/duty revolver is a custom 4" round butt 686-"nuttin"....... the ones shot the most are a 'nice' shooter grade Model 18 and a 4" no dash round butt 617.

Would have to be my 24 year old 686-4 6". Bought it new in 1994 and it has made me look good at the range ever since! Very accurate and comfortable to shoot with any load.

Good point! But even golfers have their favorite club. Well, most do.
And BAM-BAM, thank you for naming you favorite S&W revolver. I know it's hard.

The first Smith and Wesson that I bought new was over four decades ago when I was young and had very little income for recreational equipment purchases. It was a 6" Model 27
I still own that Model 27 today

Nice!
My first S&W revolver was bought in 1970. It was a Model 15 "Combat Masterpiece." I sold it to an Army buddy in 1973. Missed that Model 15 and later replaced it with a pristine Model 15-4.

Surely it is well nigh unto impossible for most of us to answer this question.
My first one?
The one I am carrying?
The one under my pillow?
My grail guns?
The one I had customized?
The one I shoot the best?
I will go with this M25-5 because it is a grail gun of mine, I shoot it well, and with those elk stocks it grabs me and makes my heart beat faster:
Of course, now the rest will snub me for weeks.............wait, I heard that guns don't act like that! YAY!!!

Well, now, that's a little more specific, although possibly not what either of you is really looking for. The first one I would buy would be my Performance Center double-Magnaported 3" 629-4 with Fishpaw grips, and the second would be my 4" round-butted 25-2, but only because they are hard to find. For actual use, it's a tossup between my 2" M15 (Improved Model 56) with Rogers grips, and aforementioned 25-2.

I like the 442 best but, I like all the J-Frames. This is all I have right now.

Not my rarest, most valuable, unique, or best shooter; but my "birth-year" 1947 M&P 4" factory nickel is my favorite

Model520Fan, you've got me to thinking & now that I think of it, the last S&W I'd keep and the first I'd buy would be two different revolvers. The last I'd keep would be my 25-5, yet the first I'd buy would be my 19-3. The next one I'd like to buy is a 10-5 with 5-inch barrel.
Interesting...

I want to change my answer.
I really like my old m28 pictured above but after some thought this 17-4 is my all time favorite. Not that I've ever shot it all that much or the fact that it was my first Smith but because Dad bought it for me new not too long before he passed away. It was one of only two guns he ever bought new in his life. Everything else was bought used.
I get it out every now and then and fire a few rounds, clean it and think about him.

Bosquebass, good revision!!
I have my dad's .22 single-shot rifle that Mom gave him for the first Christmas of my life. Dad gave me his .22 when I was 16 years old. If I had to relinquish all my guns but one, it'd be Dad's .22 that would go last.
Winchester Model 67 in .22 Long Rifle.

My favorite is a 25-5 in 45 colt. If I had to keep just one gun it would be my 686, for versatility.

Yah, you just got to get your head in the right frame of mind, colt_saa.
Fun, ain't it? Well maybe not...

WELL, THAT'S AN EXCELLENT WAY TO REPHRASE THE QUESTION.....
THE VERY FIRST ONE THAT I WOULD PURCHASE WOULD BE MY M686+ MOUNTAIN GUN. ITS ON THE VERY LEFT OF THIS TRIO OF MGs.....
IMHO---A 4" .357 MAGNUM REVOLVER, IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF ANY COLLECTION OF REVOLVERS.......
THE M686 IS THE FINEST OF THE .357 REVOLVERS, IN CURRENT PRODUCTION. ON TOP OF THE WIDE RANGE OF AMMO AVAILABLE, THIS WEAPON IS SUITABLE FOR CONCEALED CARRY AND HOME DEFENSE....
ITS 4" BARREL GIVES UP VERY LITTLE IN ACCURACY ON THE RANGE. IT IS EASILY CARRIED WHILE WOODS WALKING, AND IS APPROPRIATE FOR HUNTING. ITS A WELCOME COMPANION WHILE CAMPING, OR FISHING....

629 feels the best in hand and points the best, with 6" barrel.
My 3" 686p would be 2nd.

I would have to give the nod to my 3 inch 624 no dash in .44 special.

First I'd narrow it down to my favorite caliber. Since I'm not a hunter and don't need 44 Mag it would be 44 Special. Of the 6 guns I have in 44 Special it would be the 696 no dash I got when they first came out. Surprisingly accurate, carries well in a good holster and can even serve as home defense. Oh yeah, it's a great handling L-frame.
As a late comer to 45 Colt there is always a chance I could change my mind. If I ever land a 4" 25-5 it could become "the one".
Honorable mention goes to my 3" 10-5 square butt with Tyler t-grip. A sweet shooter and also very accurate.

I won't be relinquishing anything... That is a nice .22 and a nice story to go with it. Shoot it and shoot it often my friend!

Quite often it's the last one that I've bought, which, this time, is a 686+ 3".

My very favorite one is actually the first pistol I ever bought back in 1974, a 5" barreled nickel model 27-2 from a gun store in Natchitoches, LA when I turned 18. Me and that old gun have had some real good times together and is my sentimental favorite by far. It has made 1 trip back to S&W a few years ago to get a good tuneup, but no work done to the finish on it. It now wears a nice set of Cocobolo Culina target grips and I still bring it out and shoot it occasionally, but I am keeping it in good shape to pass down to my daughter as an heirloom.

The 586/686 series is IMHO the apex of revolver evolution. If there's anything better out there, I have yet to see it...or it hasn't been invented yet.

Smith model 66 357. Purchased in 1983 or 84. First Smith I purchased (or my mom purchased it with my money earned with farm work and Winn Dixie grocery work.) Still have it after all these years.
