Not Pinned but Recessed...End of the Line? Link to photos fixed...
Who says you can't find a deal at gunshows these days. I picked this up at a gunshow in Greenville, SC this past weekend. If anyone can help me with a born-on date, I'd appreciate it. Based on my catalog, I'm guessing 1986. What you see is what I got...no box, papers or tools but I'm pleased.

I need help in posting photos...Please excuse the photos. I took them with my Ipad using my desk lamp. I hope to do a better job in the future.

The SC of S&W shows the serial number range for N frames with an "N" prefix for 1983 to be N932101 - N932XXX. The book also shows that with the Model 28, the 28-3 had the changes that eliminated the cylinder counterbore and pinned barrel beginning 1982.
Your serial number N95XXX, by guestimating, would put production sometime after 1983 but, there was obviously a 28-2 frame lying around the factory, as evidenced by your example, that had the post 1982/83 changes incorporated.
You have a very nice looking example!

It happens. My 27-2 is recessed but not pinned. Yet mine wound up being stamped 27-2, not 27-3. It's a great gun either way, as I'm sure yours will be. It's a real beauty.

I have seen some N prefix 29-3s that were recessed but not pinned. I would guess S&W had some extra cylinders laying around

You got you a nice transitional 28-2 there man. It sure is pretty. Like the others said, around 1983 or so for your gun. The lack of a pinned barrel wouldn't keep me from owning one like yours, for sure. I like the way the recessed cylinders look as compared to the newer ones as the gap between recoil shield and cylinder is less and looks better to me. The recessed cylinder isn't any stronger than the later cylinders, but it's visual aesthetics are better to me.

I've got a 66-1 that's recessed and not pinned.
Most of my guns are P&R, but it's not a deal breaker if they're not.
