My S&W#629 44 mag 6"
I have had my 44 mag for about one year. I seem to think as I'm shooting single action, that the hammer seems to be coming back a bit harder than it did when I first got it. Shooting it double action it is very smooth and completes the cycle very nicely. I have a 357 Mdl.# 686 7 shot that is much easier to click the hammer back. I can't remember if the 44 was always that way or was it harder right from the beginning. I do like to shoot the 44 as single action. Is there anything I can do to clean, polish, or adjust anything to make it a bit easier to lock up. It certainly is not a problem to shoot it, but if I can do anything with it to make it easier I would like to give it a try. Thanks So Much. Paul Bernard

Just shoot it. Any modifications will make it less reliable.
Although, I have been known to just change the rebound slide spring to maybe a 12 or 13# to speed up the process; but nothing that just plain shooting and cleaning wont otherwise do.
Just shoot.

A shot of lube may solve your problem. The guts may be dry from the factory.

I believe the problem is in the ratchet and lugs when cycling in single action mode . This was a common problem in guns of the era from my experience with a lot of them that were as you described.Mine were all sold off before I could have the issue addressed.

Pop the sideplate and clean the lock works and put a small drop of lubricant on each pin and see what happens.
